Morning sunlight over Ano Syros (“Upper Syros”), a picturesque medieval settlement established by the Venetians around 1200 AD, on the island of Syros, South Aegean, Greece.

Ano Syros was sometimes referred to as the “hill of Catholics,” as it used to be inhabited by mainly Catholics islanders, who trace their origins to Venetian merchants and Frankish crusader and settled there as a safer location during the Middle Ages, when the island was subject to frequent raids by pirates.

Perched on top of the hill is the majestic Saint George Cathedral (Agios Georgios), a Catholic church initially built in 1208, has been destroyed and rebuilt three times since then.

The tower pictured in this post is ‘formally’ known as Tower #6. It was originally a bunker for the top-secret Operation Bumblebee on Topsail Island following WWII. In the 1950s, the area was developed and the tower became the pier house for the Ocean City Pier. The structures surrounding the tower and the pier itself were destroyed by Hurricane Fran in 1996.

I have a pretty extensive post on Forgotten NC about this Navy Operation with a bunch of photos- forgottennc.com/post/44731814493/operation-bumblebee-tops...

Aerial view of the Symi Castle, on the slopes of the hill overooking the port of Yialos and the harbor town of Symi, in the upper town Ano Symi, on the island of Symi, part of the Rhodes regional unit, in South Aegean, Greece.

It used to be an ancient acropolis in the location, and later the site of the Knights Castle, built by the Knights of Saint John in the 14th century.

The castle contains an emblem of the Knights of Saint John over the main entrance and is located at the highest point of the Upper Town. It overlooks the harbor on one side and a small valley on the other, offering a breathtaking view of the entire town as well as of the Aegean Sea beyond it. There is also a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary (Kyra Panagia). This chapel occupies the highest point on the castle and offers spectacular views of the towns of Horio and Yialos.

After several postings of black-and-white, I felt a tad 'monochromed' out, so a colour one for today. This is another of a series of images I took a few weeks ago on a rural property in Niagara-on-the Lake, Ontario. My initial point of attraction was the brilliant red barn. While speaking to the owner to obtain permission to wander around and photograph on his property, he described his car and truck restoration hobby. He seemed particularly fond of this one vehicle, a 1948 Studebaker truck, parked behind the barn. And 'Red Rule' applied. - JW

Found this doorway while on a walking tour with Sheikh Mohommed bin Rashid Center for Cultural Understanding in Dubai.

The area has been restored to earlier times, and for a small fee, you can take a 90 minute guided tour of "old Dubai". It was really a great experience.
