Hong Kong Transport - Trucks

The Hong Kong Truck Culture

The number of Trucks, Vans* and Special Purpose Vehicles (Light, Medium & Heavy) registered + licenced in Hong Kong seems to fluctuate between 120,000 - 125,000 vehicles and presumably new trucks registered are offset by old trucks being retired or sold over the border in China.

*Vans are classified as Light Goods Vehicles and are not shown in this album

In Hong Kong Trucks are classified as GOODS VEHICLES By the Transport Department - see below

☛Light Goods Vehicles - Goods vehicles of permitted gross vehicle weight not exceeding 5.5 tonnes.

☛Medium Goods Vehicles - Goods vehicles of permitted gross vehicle weight exceeding 5.5 tonnes but not exceeding 24 tonnes.

☛Heavy Goods Vehicles - Goods vehicles of permitted gross vehicle weight exceeding 24 tonnes but not exceeding 38 tonnes.

The major truck types you tend to see in urban areas are trucks carrying construction materials or waste, dump trucks, concrete mixers and all sizes of delivery trucks... outside of the urban areas it is container trucks and large trucks carrying construction materials.

The following brands of Trucks can be seen on the streets of Hong Kong and include:-

Beiben ✚ Bell ✚ CAMC ✚ CNHTC ✚ DAF ✚ Dennis ✚ Dong Feng ✚ FAW ✚ Fuso ✚ Foton ✚ Ford ✚ Hino ✚ Howo ✚ Hyundai ✚ Isuzu ✚ Iveco ✚ JAC ✚ Kato ✚ KIA ✚ Liebherr ✚ MAN ✚ Mercedes Benz ✚ Mitsubishi ✚ Nissan ✚ Renault ✚ Scania ✚ Shacman ✚ Sinotruk ✚ Suzuki ✚ Toyota ✚ UD ✚ Volvo ✚ Zoomlion

Hong Kong is a brand conscious place even for trucks (!) hence the popularity of the European brands, Scania and Man are very popular and even the older trucks look the business and they are utterly reliable.

Sanary sur mer, France

The R-4360 was a 28-cylinder four-row air cooled radial engine. Each row of pistons was slightly offset from the previous, forming a semi-helical arrangement to facilitate efficient airflow cooling of the successive rows of cylinders, with the spiraled cylinder setup inspiring the engine's "corncob" nickname. A mechanical supercharger geared at 6.374:1 ratio to engine speed provided forced induction, while the propeller was geared at 0.375:1 so that the tips did not reach inefficient supersonic speeds.

Although reliable in flight, the Wasp Major was maintenance-intensive. Improper starting technique could foul all 56 spark plugs, which would require hours to clean or replace. As with most piston aircraft engines of the era, the time between overhauls of the Wasp Major was about 600 hours when used in commercial service.

Engine displacement was 4,362.50 in³ (71.5 L), hence the model designation. Initial models developed 3,000 hp (2,240 kW), and later models 3,500 hp but one model delivered 4,300 hp (3200 kW) using two large turbochargers in addition to the supercharger. Engines weighed 3,482 to 3,870 lb (1,579 to 1,755 kg), giving a power to weight ratio of 1.11 hp/lb (1.83 kW/kg), which was matched or exceeded by very few contemporary engines.

Wasp Majors were produced between 1944 and 1955; 18,697 were built.

The Rainbow Box, by Designer/illustrator Norman Laliberté and author Joseph Pintauro.

This product is in mint condition, with possible exception of box itself which is still amazing, but with a sticker pull and hard to notice edge wear, but barely worn at all. Interior, books and poster appear brand new.

Produced in limited edition of 15,000, this consists of the box itself, four books—A Box of Sun, The Peace Box, The Rabbit Box and The Magic Box plus “The Peace Poster”, which says "Make the World Attractive to the Rest of the Universe" - which honors in art and poetry the four seasons plus the times of life. The idea was to present these four different subjects in individual books that were then put together in as colorful and as exciting a manner as the books themselves were. The concept of the cube represented the multifaceted views of time and life as presented within the books. To produce so many pages of color in a special package at a minimal price required the integration of the efforts of the poet, the artist and the printer to get maximum benefit at minimal dollar cost.

Special Features: The box itself was manufactured by The Box Shop, New Haven, Connecticut, who also assembled the pieces into the cubes and manufactured the color space interiors.

Hong Kong Transport - Buses | All types

Bus services in Hong Kong have to be amongst the best of all major cities in the World.

All major Hong Kong Bus Companies invest heavily and are using mainly brand new double decker buses and all of them are testing and introducing single and double decker 100% electric buses and also hydrogen powered buses for future use.

☛Major Franchised Bus Companies in Hong Kong

Citybus | Cityflyer ✚ Kowloon Motor Bus | KMB ✚ Long Win Motor Bus | LWB ✚ New Lantao Bus | NLB ✚ HZMB ✚ Note : New World First Bus | NWFB merged with Citybus in 2022

☛Non - Franchised Public Bus Services using double decker and single decker buses (feeder services)

Mass Transit Railway | MTR ✚ DBTS - Lantau Island ✚ Park Island Transport Co. Ltd.

☛All Major Franchised Public Minibus Services (PLB) seating 16 or 19 people

Franchised and Non Franchised Public Light Bus Red Top ✚ Franchised Public Light Bus Green Top

☛Privately Owned Buses

Toyota seems to be the preferred brand for privately owned small and medium sized buses and are used for the following purposes

Public and Private Rehab Buses ✚ Commercial Building Buses ✚ Resident Services Buses ✚ Travel and Tour Buses ✚ Contract Hire ✚ School Buses ✚ Hotel Buses ✚ Misc. Buses for any type of charter | hire too numerous to mention including cross border buses.

One of the largest privately owned companies is Kwoon Chung Bus Company who also offer Non Franchised and Franchised Bus Services through it‛s subsidiary New Lantao Bus

☛Many Hong Kong Government Departments have a fleet of buses but for some reason also contract hire from Private Bus Companies on an “as needed” basis.

Any Government OWNED and operated vehicle in this section (such as Correctional Services Buses, Police Buses etc ) have a licence plate starting AM and any Chinese Military Vehicle has a licence plate starting ZG and naturally some of these vehicles have personalized licence plates which they buy at Government Auction!
