The cemetery also offers a view of the changing style of death monuments in Ireland over the last 200 years: from the austere, simple, high stone erections of the period up until the 1860s, to the elaborate Celtic crosses of the nationalistic revival from the 1860s to the 1960s, to the plain Italian marble of the late 20th century.

The high wall with watch-towers surrounding the main part of the cemetery was built to deter bodysnatchers, who were active in Dublin in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The watchmen also had a pack of blood-hounds who roamed the cemetery at night.

In 2009, Glasnevin Trust in co-operation with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) began identifying the graves of Irish service personnel who died while serving in the Commonwealth forces during the two world wars. These names are inscribed on two memorials, rededicated and relocated in 2011 to near the main entrance. A Cross of Sacrifice was erected in the cemetery, in a joint Irish-British commemoration ceremony, to mark the First World War centenary. As of March 2017, there are 214 service personnel of the Commonwealth of both wars identified as buried here.

THE KARMANN GHIA

Recognized almost as readily as the legendary Beetle itself, and with a cult following all of its own, the Karmann Ghia was, in its maker's own words: 'A Volkswagen for people who can't stand the sight of a Volkswagen.' Hand built by Karmann at its Osnabrück coachbuilding works, VW's top-of-the-range model married a modified export Beetle floor-pan, running gear and engine/transmission package to stylish coachwork penned by Carrozzeria Ghia.

Launched in 1955 in 1,200cc form, the Karmann Ghia kept abreast of mainstream Beetle developments, gaining all-synchromesh transmission and progressively larger and more-powerful engines. A cabriolet appeared in 1957 and in 1959 the car's front end underwent a subtle restyle with raised headlamps and enlarged nose intakes.

Produced until 1974, the Karmann Ghia remains one of Ghia's most commercially successful designs

THE MOTORCAR OFFERED

Fortunately, this lovely and rather early production example up for auction suffers no such indignities, wearing as it does elegant small taillights, slim bumpers, round side turn signals, and no rubber overriders. Recently restored to an elevated and comprehensive standard by a former VW and Porsche mechanic, the car now presents beautifully throughout.

Aside from its gorgeous styling, the car's most striking feature is certainly its color, subtly enhanced here by a very 1960's SoCal-style set of hand-painted pinstripes in fuchsia and gold, finished off with an intricate flourish on the engine lid. Small factory steel wheels with modest "dog dish" hubcaps complete the look.

Inside, the cabin presents just as well, and displays many accurate factory-style details such as correct square-weave German carpeting, and textured vinyl upholstery. Note also the correct steering wheel with Wolfsburg crest, transistor radio, excellent headliner, and of course, lots of exposed sheet metal wearing that fabulous shade of turquoise.

Way in back lives a 1192cc air-cooled boxer four producing 40 hp in standard, single-carb form. It's no surprise to see the engine and its surroundings are as detailed and tidy as the rest of the car, with gleaming, fresh cadmium plating visible in several places, immaculate fan and barrel shrouds, clean factory textured firewall material, and shiny, dual 'pea-shooter' exhaust pipes poking out beneath the rear bumper.

At the opposite end, where you'd find an engine in most cars, resides a factory style spare wheel and tire, the latter with its valve stem connected to a hose providing pressurized air to power the windshield washer. Note again the square-weave carpeting.

It's Bonhams day!

This year I was able to escape the snow and join Fred in Scottsdale for sunshine, cars, and music! I also drove down to Tucson to meet Doug for lunch and spend a nice evening visting with Richard and Lola.

A traveller offered, via his blog, to send postcards from his visit to North Korea. I was one of the lucky recipients! This is the back of the card with the stamps and postmark.

This one goes a long - very long - way into collecting a postcard from every country.

This is a resting hut that offers opportunities to learn more about hawks and other raptors while taking a break--learning about the surroundings is always an important focus at LWG.

The series of photos associated with the newly established Meadow Garden—making it more visitor-friendly and educational than the past—were taken during a warm late summer day. Being nature enthusiasts with a passion and appreciation for meadow birds and insects, besides the native grasses and other plants, this was a special trip. The landscape was breathtaking, and one could see why the famous Wyeth family of artists would often use the regional rolling hills and meadows for their subjects in water color and oil paintings. There is truly something so captivating in the simplicity of such terrain, and walking these grounds toward the latter part of the afternoon was quite appealing. The design of the paths, which also incorporate well-constructed boardwalks with a touch of aesthetics, was nicely done, and allowed the visitors to really take in this grand meadow from a variety of superb viewing points. In addition, the old Webb home of stone, which now serves as a kind of gallery that offers some artifacts from the past, can be seen in so many different lights, each one presenting a unique expression of the landscape.

This is absolutely one of our very favorite places to visit, for this world class floral and horticultural institution is often considered amongst the finest in North America. With the original ownership and meticulous planning and design executed by the famous Pierre du Pont, and subsequently carried over to the present day’s attention to detail and first rate exhibits, this over 1,000 acres of spectacular landscape is a sight—and site— to behold. The wide variety of flowers and plants at Longwood Gardens is absolutely stunning in all stages and species . . . akin to a real life Garden of Eden for anyone with a deep passion and appreciation for these gifts of nature. In addition, the superb stone work of the many architectural designs and structures, such as the grand fountains, promenades, conservatory and more throughout the grounds accentuate the experience, never ceasing to amaze. And now that the new Meadow Garden has been created, it has only enhanced the total experience for all.

CHECK OUT OUR LONGWOOD GARDENS Album--you will be amazed at what one can see.

Few gatherings in the automotive world capture the imagination of enthusiasts quite like Rennsport Reunion, Porsche's festival of motorsport history. Held at California's Laguna Seca since the fourth edition, it has become the stage for some of Porsche's boldest debuts. At Rennsport Reunion VI in 2018, Porsche stunned the world with the unveiling of the modern 935—a 77-unit, track-only homage to the flame-spitting Group 5 monster of the 1970s. Known internally as “Project Flatnose,” it recalled the outrageous proportions of the 935/78 “Moby Dick,” yet wrapped them around the chassis of the 911 (991.2) GT2 RS Clubsport. It was a birthday present for Porsche's 70th anniversary and signaled a return to limited-edition track cars designed outside the constraints of homologation.

Five years later, Porsche returned to Laguna Seca for Rennsport Reunion VII with another extraordinary creation: the 911 GT3 R rennsport. If the 935 was a tribute to turbocharged spectacle, the rennsport explores purity. The rennsport offers what Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport, calls “the experience of driving a 911-based racing car in what is probably the most primal form.” Limited to just 77 examples it is Porsche's latest demonstration of what happens when engineers and designers are freed from the rulebook.

The GT3 R rennsport is based on the 992-generation 911 GT3 R, the factory-built race car competing in GT3 series worldwide. But where the standard GT3 R is bound by FIA regulations governing weight, aerodynamics, and power, the rennsport special dispenses with them entirely. Its concept, Porsche notes, is “beyond any technical regulations or racing series.” The result is a machine conceived not to meet a homologation checklist, but to thrill its driver.

The design is the work of Style Porsche's Grant Larson and Thorsten Klein. Larson, responsible for many Porsche icons, and Klein, a creative force behind modern one-offs, approached the rennsport with a dual aim: to maximize the proportions of a modern race car while embedding references to Porsche's past. Its roofline and hood reveal kinship with the GT3 R, but every other panel is unique. The stance is low and wide, the surfaces stretched taut over muscular haunches.

The most striking element is the vast rear wing. Inspired by the Martini Racing Porsche 935s that conquered Group 5 in the mid-to-late 1970s, it rises from the tail with theatrical presence. Its downforce is so prodigious that additional supports were required. Below, a full-width LED strip illuminates the Porsche script, while digital side mirrors replace conventional glass, relaying images to cockpit screens.

Inside, the rennsport is uncompromising. The single-seat cabin is designed purely for driving, with a fixed bucket, six-point harness, FIA roll cage, and Race-Tex upholstery across a minimalist dashboard. Safety nets, a roof rescue hatch, and a 117-liter fuel cell remind its occupants that it is, at its core, a racing machine.

Beneath the carbon skin lies a masterpiece of natural aspiration. The 4.2-liter flat-six, derived from the GT3 R, is fitted with Rennsport-specific pistons and camshafts, a higher compression ratio, and unique mapping. Without intake restrictors, output climbs to 620 PS at 9,400 rpm. The response is sharpened by a single-mass flywheel, carbon intake, and six throttle butterflies. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed constant-mesh sequential gearbox, complete with an electrohydraulic clutch actuator and Rennsport-exclusive performance upshift. With a target curb weight of 1,240 kilograms in unpainted form, the Rennsport achieves an extraordinary two kilograms per PS power-to-weight ratio.

The chassis mirrors the proven setup of the GT3 R but is tuned for additional power and rennsport-specific aero kit. A double-wishbone front suspension and enhanced multilink rear, both with five-way adjustable dampers and anti-roll bars, deliver precision. Michelin-developed rennsport-specific racing tires are mounted on single-piece forged BBS aluminum wheels—12.5 inches wide at the front, 13.0 at the rear. Braking is by aluminum monobloc calipers—six-piston front, four-piston rear—clamping ventilated, grooved steel discs. Rennsport-specific pads with titanium backplates reduce unsprung mass, while Bosch Race ABS ensures consistency and confidence.

As with the 2019 935, exclusivity is central to the GT3 R rennsport's appeal. Just 77 were built, each available with personalization options. The baseline “body-in-white" was finished in Agate Grey Metallic with exposed carbon, but customers were also offered three optional, exclusive painted designs for €123.000 in tribute to Rennsport Reunion, Flacht, and Speed Icons. Additionally, harness belts could be ordered in Rennsport-specific colors—red, blue, or yellow—for further customization.

For fans of Porsche, the appeal of the 911 GT3 R rennsport transcends mere figures. This particular example, limitation number 37, was ordered directly from Porsche by the consignor with both options selected. For an additional €123.000, the Exclusive “Flacht Design” livery in classic Porsche Motorsport red and white was chosen to grace the new 911's muscular carbon fiber bodywork. In addition, red harnesses were chosen to complement the exterior color scheme. Since its handover, this motorsport special has remained housed in a collection in an “as delivered” state. It retains a number of original delivery items and digital purchase information and is offered with test and delivery kilometers registered on its digital race dash.

The GT3 R rennsport is a celebration of design and engineering freed from restriction, a visceral connection to Porsche's motorsport soul, and a sure-fire instant classic. Like the 935 that came before it, it is a gift to Porsche and motorsport enthusiasts, a collectible of rare purity, and above all, a car that delivers the primal thrill of motorsport in its most unfiltered form as a jewel in Porsche's lineage of limited-run track specials.

Nature's first green is gold,

Her hardest hue to hold.

Her early leaf's a flower;

But only so an hour.

Then leaf subsides to leaf.

So Eden sank to grief,

So dawn goes down to day.

Nothing gold can stay.

Preservationists, Elected Officials, & East Villagers Protest Trend of City Allowing Demolition of “landmark eligible” Buildings, Call for Preservation of 264 East 7th Street and “Political Row”

For the second time in two months, the City has reversed a prior determination and refused to protect a historic East Village site

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Andrew Berman, Executive Director Andrew@gvshp.org, 917-533-1767

New York – A powerful convergence of groups joined together today to protest the city’s refusal to landmark an East 7th Street building built in circa 1842-3 in the middle of the last remaining row of intact homes of that important era.

These five buildings were ruled “landmark-eligible” by the city in 2008, and yet when they faced the threat of demolition and GVSHP urged they be protected, the city refused, claiming they no longer qualified for landmark status.

What changed? Nothing about the buildings – the only difference is who the Mayor is and the direction of the Landmarks Preservation Commission.

“The Landmarks Preservation Commission is allowing the demolition of a rare, beloved, and utterly surprising piece of our city’s history – a piece they themselves deemed worthy of landmark protection just eight years ago. It is outrageous that the city would allow this wonderful link to 19th century New York be destroyed, and doubly outrageous that they would go back on their word and their own evaluation. All they have to do is give these buildings their day in court, and hold a hearing on considering them for landmark district designation. We are confident that if they did the full Commission would vote to protect them. But the Chair, appointed by the Mayor, is refusing to do even that,” said Andrew Berman GVSHP Executive Director.

In September, GVSHP and allied groups reached out the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission to urge them to landmark 264 East 7th Street, and the adjacent houses at 258, 260, 262, and 266 East 7th Street. Once part of what was known as “Political Row”, these five ca. 1842 houses, located between Avenues C and D, have rare and beautiful intact Greek Revival ornament, and are linked to the history of the early development of New York’s waterfront and to critical political figures of the 19th and early 20th century in New York.

In spite of this fact, the Landmarks Preservation Commission recently responded saying they did not consider the buildings worthy of landmark designation. The LPC did admit that the buildings are “similar in age and style to those found in the Greenwich Village Historic District, East Village Historic District and others.”

The LPC offered a specious excuse that it’s rare to designate a historic district covering just one side of the street, which is easily proven false. At the rally it was pointed out again that at least eight others are designated on one side of the street, with one, the East 10th Street Historic District, just a few blocks away. The examples given are in three different boroughs: East 17th/Irving Place, East 10th Street, Lamartine Place, Hardenburgh/Rhinelander, Henderson Place all in Manhattan, Perry Avenue in the Bronx and Ocean on the Park and Park Place Historic Districts in Brooklyn.

At the rally it was pointed out that this was sadly not the first such failure by the agency that earlier this year also refused to landmark five 19th-century Beaux Arts tenements at 112-120 East 11th Street, between 3rd and 4th Avenues.

Richard D. Moses, President of the Lower East Side Preservation Initiative said, “This historic building, in the middle of a wonderful and intact row of mid-19th century structures, are clearly deserving of landmark protection. It’s time that the city puts its residents, community history, and architectural treasures above developers’ profits, and step up to protect these and other unprotected historic buildings in the East Village now!” More of their work here www.lespi-nyc.org

One small positive note was mentioned: due to the 2008 East Village rezoning which GVSHP and other groups fought for, the height of any new development on this block of East 7th Street is limited to 75 feet in height after setbacks. Previously there were NO height limits for new development on this block, a significant community victory achieved in the Bloomerg era.

GVSHP was also joined by representatives of East Village Community Coalition www.evccnyc.org

Before and at the rally the public was urged to write to the Mayor at a convenient webpage: www.gvshp.org/7thstreet with hundreds already sent.
