Three Bates College alumni with careers in social activism offer a panel discussion titled "The Path From Activism to Leadership: Through the Alumni Lens of Engagement at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, in Room 221-222 of the college’s New Commons Building, 136 Central Ave.
Open to the public at no cost, the event was jointly sponsored by the Bates Alumni and Parent Engagement office, the Harward Center for Community Partnerships and the Bates Alumni Council.
The panelists discussed ways of engaging in the political process; how to transform volunteerism into activism; ways of understanding root causes of social problems; and how to identify an issue and frame it as a problem that can be addressed.
The panelists were:
Melanie Mala Ghosh '93; MIT-India Program Manager, Bates Alumni Council;
Jessica Parsons ’93, an environmental education community organizer who is the project manager for Circle the City, an initiative of the Emerald Necklace Conservancy in Boston;
and Ben Chin ’07, political engagement director for the Maine People’s Alliance.
Audience members will be encouraged to talk with the alumni after the panel presentation to learn more about their career paths and opportunities to gain experience in their fields.
Cohen joined the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative in 2011. She has worked in global health and humanitarian aid for more than 15 years, primarily with Doctors Without Borders, aka Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). Her work for that organization included time in South Africa and Lesotho. She serves on the board of directors of MSF’s Operational Center in Brussels.
She earned her master’s in public policy with a certificate in health and health policy from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.
Circle the City, of which Parsons is project manager, is an initiative focused on the streets connecting Boston’s parks — landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted’s “Emerald Necklace.” CTC programs entice Boston residents into car-free streets for a variety of family recreational activities. The program is a 2012 Urban Signature Project of President Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors initiative.
Parsons previously spent more than 15 years as a teacher and administrator of environmental education programs in California and in Boston. She holds a master’s degree in education policy and management from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Chin joined the Maine People’s Alliance as a community organizer after graduating from Bates. After three years as a community organizer, he became MPA’s political engagement director, working to promote grassroots engagement with the legislative process in Augusta. He is co-director of a political action committee called Committee to Rebuild Maine’s Middle Class.
Chin was field director of the 2011 Protect Maine Votes campaign, which helped defeat an attempt to eliminate the state’s 38-year tradition of Election Day voter registration at polling places.

The Britcar Endurance Trophy was the First up and it was time to see who could claim that elusive Pole Position and to see if anyone else could challenge the Top Three Drivers Lets see how things turned out.
In First Place was the Pairing Of (Datum Motorsport's Axel Van Nederveen and Adriano Medeiros) in their Ginetta G55A with a Best Lap Time of 52:193 and an Average Speed of 64.75mph. Congratulations Axel and Adriano a Really Fantastic Drive and A Super Victory.
In Second Place was (SVG's Mark Lee) in his Ginetta G56A with a Best Lap Time of 52.086 and an Average Speed of 64.70mph. Amazing Drive Mark Keeping that Ginetta on the Track and Taking Second Place while Nearly Matching the Speed of Axel and Adriano. Well Done.
In Third Place was (Terry Stephens) in his Peugeot 308 with a Best Lap Time of 53.421 and an Average Speed of 64.50mph. Well Fought Terry a Fantastic Finish in Third Place and Staying Ahead by just over 11 seconds to the Pair of Jasver and Bryan in 4th. Amazing Job.

Now it was Time for the Fan Favourite to Enter onto the Brands Hatch Circuit with the Pre 66 Touring Cars Championship. With Mini's Lotus Cortina's and Ford Falcons. This was One Race that No One Wanted to Miss. After a Very Fast Paced Qualifying Session on the Saturday Which saw (Alan Greenhalgh) take Pole Position who Will be able to Challenge Him During the Race and Snatch Victory Away from Him.

The Junior Saloon Car Championship was Up Next and Even Though the Age Range of thease Next Drivers Taking to the Circuit Might Shock you at The Fact that Many of them are as Young as 15 Years of age don't be Fooled Because thease Guys Know how to Race Having been brought up from Carting since the age of 4. They are always a Fan Favourite and After Qualifying on the Saturday its Anyone's Game as to Who Wins and Who Losses in Thease Races.

Finally it was Time for the Last Two Races of the Day the Kumo BMW Championship. Featuring The Makes and Models of Many BMW'S taking to the Circuit for Race 1. After a Busy Day Qualifying on Saturday Lets See what Each Driver Cando in The Frist of Two Races for their Championship.
In First Place was (Niall Bradley) in his BMW E46 M3 with a Best Lap Time of 50.920 and an Average Speed of 83.60mph. Brilliant Driving There Niall Pushing the Power of the BMW Engine to Max and Putting the Pedal to the Metal the Whole Race. A Superb Victory.

Senator Thad Cochran offered the keynote speech on Sunday at the dedication of the historic L.Q.C. Lamar House in Oxford, Mississippi. The home of Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar, a former U.S. Supreme Court justice and Cabinet member, was denoted a national historic landmark in 1975. Several years of negotiating and fundraising to provide funds to restore the historic home was lead by the Oxford-Lafayette County Heritage Foundation. Cochran also worked with Congress to provide money for the restoration. The home was dedicated as a teaching museum.

Jurong Bird Park, collection of more than 8,000 birds from 600 species, offers visitors an experience that is entertaining as well as educational. The Penguin Parade enclosure, in a re-created Antarctic setting, houses more than 200 penguins of five species. Within the Penguin Parade enclosure, there are some 50 other sea-birds such as the inca terns and puffins. The Southeast Asian Birds Aviary houses in its 24 individual aviaries and a main walk-in aviary, more than 100 species of birds from the equatorial jungles of Southeast Asia. The birds' natural equatorial habitat is re-created within this exhibit, including simulated tropical thunderstorms everyday at noon.
One of the newly opened areas of the park is the African Waterfall Aviary, home to more than 1,500 free-flying African birds. This is an enclosed sexton of the park with many small tropical birds and a beautiful man-made waterfall.
The Lory Loft showcases the Lory, a native bird of Australia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Visitors can enter, traverse and exit Lory Loft at treetop level, allowing for a bird eye’s view of the majestic panorama. From beginning to end, the Lory Loft provides visitors with a 360 degrees elevated view of the environs.
Jurong Bird Park presents “The Early Bird Breakfast Show”, featuring a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with some of its prized birds, which includes Big John, a 45-year-old Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, Merlin-the Yellow-Naped Amazon, Eclectus Parrots and more. Visitors will get the chance to mingle with these birds while having breakfast amidst the lush surroundings of the Jurong Bird Park. The programme takes place at the Bongo Burgers Terrace daily, with breakfast starting at 8.30am and the show beginning at 9.15am. For reservations, call (65) 6661 7856.
The Bird Discovery Centre, a living classroom is where visitors will be able to find the answers to their questions on birds as well as see the different stages of a bird’s life from an embryo to an egg, come up close to the now-extinct Elephant bird, specimens of birds’ anatomies, and many more. The Bird Discovery Centre is open to visitors from 8.30am to 6.00pm daily.
The Bird Park added yet another feather to its cap with the addition of The Riverine - a simulated natural freshwater river habitat featuring over 20 species of ducks, fishes and turtles.
The best way to start a tour of the Bird Park is to board the modern, air-conditioned panorail system. Its route covers the entire Park, providing excellent elevated views of the various exhibits. A walking tour is then suggested, using the Park's footpaths and map.
