Rock City officially opened as a public attraction on May 21, 1932. It got off to a slow start because advertising in those days was difficult, especially since Garnet & Frieda Carter’s mountain-top attraction was not located in a place that people would just happen to be passing by and take notice. It was at this point another brilliant idea of Garnet Carter’s was born. In 1936, he enlisted the help of a young sign painter named Clark Byers, who was hired to travel the nation’s highways and offer to paint a farmer’s barns in exchange for letting him paint three simple words: See Rock City. The distinctive black-and-white signs appeared as far north as Michigan, as far west as Texas, and as far south as Florida. The advertising soon began to produce the desired effect and by the 1950's, Garnet's message was painted on over 900 barns. Journalists began calling Clark and his helpers the "Barnyard Rembrandts", and vacationers by the millions have heeded the call to "SEE ROCK CITY".

Garnet's innovative spirit and Clark's hard work are still evident along many U.S. highways (not particularly the interstate system but the old highway system) and are much loved pieces of Americana. This one in particular is located about 30 miles southwest of Rock City and reads "35 Miles to Beautiful Rock City". It is also the barn that has a similar message on the opposite side of the roof that reads "Sequoyah Caverns" making it one of the more unique advertising barns I've ever photographed. Having one 'attraction' on one side of the roof and a completely different 'attraction' on the other side is about as interesting as you can find in one of these old advertising barns. (See the image below in the comments for the other side.)

If I hadn't filled up a card and drained a battery I would have still been out there shooting these adorable Burrowing Owls. This particular shot with all the expressions spoke volumnes to me and I couldn't help laughing when I saw it. I hope you see it too...:)

03/01/2019; Last year in February, I came up with the idea to shoot the sunset from the roof of NeMo, not realizing I was too late already back then. Late December or early January was when it was about to happen.

By the start of December last year, I kept this idea in mind, but or I was busy with work, or the weather was poor. But on this Thursday in early January, in which I was off from work, the weather was on my side. Patience finally paying off. :)

An old bi-plane takes off from a grass airstrip in the middle of England, against a dramatic sunset sky.

Some people have commented on the fact that the propeller is stationary........

well it COULD be ..........

".... because the young Pilot stalled the engine soon after taking off, and just after the `plane passed over head, it crashed into the Airport Control Tower in a ball of fire............the Pilot and all the Staff survived unhurt....."

Day 209 (v 12.0) - but no day off

On our last morning in Anchorage, we decided to pass some time planespotting out at Point Woronzof, before we returned the rental car. I was pschyed to see a Coast Guard HC-130J squeeze in between the parade of 747s and depart off runway 33, presumably returning home to the air station on Kodiak Island.

Based on where this and a similar plane were parked on the ramp, I suspect they were ferried to Anchorage for heavy maintenance that couldn't be done at Kodiak.

Ernest Salu is the name of three Brussels stone sculptors specialized in funerary sculpture. Their well-known family stone cutting business was located in Laeken, and existed for more than a century, from 1872 to 1984. Laken Cemetery next door was their 'showroom'.

This is their former workshop, now a funerary art museum.

Two mute swans take off. Only after I started photographing birds like this taking off did I realize that part of the process is running on the water. Seen at Lake Erie Metropark, near where the Detroit River meets Lake Erie.

I hit the road with a new buddy I made on Instagram this morning. Last night we were trying to decide between one of the waterfall hikes in the Gorge or something else. We eventually settled on trying to locate a hidden lava tube near Carson, WA that we had both heard about and see photos of. After some back road adventuring and a quick quarter mile hike we found our hole in the ground and wandered in. Inside we found a huge, cavernous, cathedral shaped lava tube with striated walls and sections of floor alternating between high piles of boulder and smooth sand and cooled lava. We spent some time shooting long exposures, painting the walls with our headlamps. There's no darkness quite like being 1/4 mile under the surface of the earth and turning all your lights off.
