This is a photo story that fascinated me! I was photographing a great blue heron rookery (600mm lens), and suddenly a pair of red-tail hawks began circling the top of the tree where one GBH was standing guard. One hawk continually flew close to the guard heron, who then swelled up its chest, spread its huge wings, and screamed at the hawk. This happened numerous times. Finally the hawk flew back in carrying some dried weeds in its beak and landed on a nest directly below the fierce-looking heron. The hawk tucked its reeds into the nest and then settled in. The heron, seeming to accept the hawk's presence, relaxed its threatening posture and resumed its regular guard position!

Salty ol' seadog having a crafty glass and a smoke. Dogs used to know how to relax in the old days. Personal collection.

THANK YOU all sooooo much for your lovely comment, it means a lot to me, especially as I'd never taken a photo until 2 months ago.

In the lineup of life, do you stand out, do you dare to be different, do you want to be noticed?

In the case of the M&M, the odd man is out, I'd eat that one first!

Haha my daughter saw me posting this and ran for the candy jar!

I have to post this, it's not 100% sharp 'cos it's hard to throw a snowball at the same time as holding a 7lb camera/lens combo one handed whilst trying to focus on a moving lunatic, but I just love his face.

I suddenly have a new russian submarine. There is a snowman manning the deck gun. The captain is named Russianbias. He is an aquafarmer. He is dressed very strangely. The sub will disappear in a week and does not appear to be playable.

"The world's largest Sunday school" occupies several blocks behind the church; here's the sign-language section, housed in an old terra-cotta Odd Fellows hall. (The Odd Fellows are a benevolent society, not unlike the Masons and Lions but with a cooler name.)

This old crossing signal governs movements over the diamond at North Vernon, IND. The line I'm standing on is the former Pennsylvanina line down to Madison, IND. It is now operated by the City of Madison Port Authority--that's their ex-SP geep back there. The double-track line is CSX's Cincy to St. Louis line.

This structure is about two feet tall and was built in front of the bunker mounds. It wasn't clear who built it or what its purpose is.

I went birding on Jan 2 at the Lee Metcalf NWR to get my year bird list started. I found a family of five of these odd birds -- unusually active for late afternoon.

I have made this shot without a tripod and with f3.5. So please don't care about some noisy and some blurred parts in the picture. No pixel peeping please. ;-) Enjoy the pattern in all. I've never seen or noticed it like that before.
