True-Tone alto neck, dinged.

Over the years Buescher appears to have made periodic alterations to the neck taper and octave pip to improve response and intonation. Such change are far from obvious to the eye.

One thing that's easy to pick out is the markings on the True-Tone alto necks. They are usually stamped with a mark on the ring above the neck's tenon sleeve. You'll find either an asterisk (*) or number one (1) on the True-Tone necks; there are also necks with two asterisks (**) floating around, though those may belong to the later New Aristocrat alto horns.

I have no idea what they're supposed to mean or why the markings are there. The asterisk and number 1 marked necks are supposed to be identical, inside and out, but I don't know. However I'm pretty sure than any True-Tone neck will fit on any True-Tone body - the tenon dimensions did not change.

The neck numbers on the New Aristocrat alto necks introduce a lot of confusion. Buescher offered three different necks with different tapers, each for a different set of playing characteristics. The numbers were 01, 02 and 03. In general if you see what looks like a True-Tone neck but it's got two digits stamped on the horn, it's a New Aristocrat neck. Could be the ** stamped necks are for the New Aristocrat as well.

Again, I do know that the New Aristocrat necks fit onto True-Tone horns. You can take a New Aristocrat 01 neck, put it on a True-Tone alto and it works great. The 01 neck tends to clear up some characteristic tuning problems the True-Tone altos have above high A or so.

The 01 neck seems to have become Buescher's standard neck taper for the early Aristocrats, so you see necks for those horns stamped with 01. The Aristocrat necks have a brace, though, so they're easily distinguishable from earlier horns.

Celtic Connections Festival, www.celticconnections.com/.

Country: Ireland (Scottish resident). Style: Traditional Scottish Folk.

Lineup: Malin Lewis (scottish smallpipes), Jarlath Henderson (uilleann pipes/low whistle), .Ali Hutton (g), and guest: Shona Mooney (fiddle).

Malin Lewis from the Isle of Skye is just 20 and is studying piping on the degree course at the Royal Conservatoire. They started making his own instruments aged 14 and plays a Smallpipes with a Lindsay System Chanter (which extends the range of the instrument to two octaves). Lewis started performing with Jarlath Henderson and Ali Hutton last year and for this concert Shona Mooney was added. I have photographed Henderson, Hutton and Mooney with other groups (to view click on the musicians name in my tags)

The Seventh Day within the Octave of the Epiphany

"Having laid their offerings at the feet of Jesus, as the sign of the alliance they had, in the name of all mankind, contracted with him, and laden with his graces and blessings, the Magi take their leave of the Divine Babe; for such was his will. They take their departure from Bethlehem, and the rest of the world seems a wilderness to them. Oh, if they might be permitted to fix their abode near the new-born King and his incomparable Mother! But no; God's plan for the salvation of the world requires that everything savouring of human pomp and glory should be far from him who had come to take upon himself all our miseries.

"Besides, they are to be the first messengers of the Gospel; they must go and tell to the Gentiles that the Mystery of Salvation has begun, that the earth is in possession of its Saviour, and that their salvation is nigh at hand. The star does not return to them; they needed it to find Jesus; but now they have him in their hearts, and will never lose him." ~ The Liturgical Year

Octave Spring Summer 2014

17th May 2018 at the Union Chapel, London N1 (I'm With Her gig).

The Mandola is part of the Mandolin family. The instrument tuned an octave below the Mandolin is called an [Octave] Mandola in Europe and an Octave Mandolin in North America. The latter reseve the term Mandola for an instrument tuned a fifth below a Mandolin, which the fomer call a Tenor Mandolin. The Octave instrument is larger than the Tenor one - with a scale length of around 50-58 cm (20-23”) compared to 40-42 cm (17-18”).

This instrument has a guitar shaped body and was built by Fletcher Brock of Seattle, WA.

Octave Mandolins/Mandolas are assigned the number 321.321 in the Hornbostel-Sachs classification of musical instruments ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornbostel-Sachs ), indicating

3 = Chordophone. Instruments where the sound is primarily produced by the vibration of a string or strings that are stretched between fixed points.

32 = Composite Chordophone. Acoustic and electro acoustic instruments which have a resonator as an integral part of the instrument, and solid body electric chordophones.

321 = Lutes. Instruments where the plane of the strings runs parallel with the resonators surface.

321.3 = Handle Lutes. Instruments in which the string bearer is a plain handle.

321.32 = Necked Lutes. Instrument in which the handle is attached to, or carved from, the resonator, like a neck.

321.321 = Necked Bowl Lutes. Instrument with a resonator made from a bowl, either natural or carved.

Note: Strictly speaking the shape of this particular instrument makes it a Box Lute rather than a Bowl Lute. However I’ve decided to keep all the Mandolas/Octave Mandolins together.

Sonic Sandblasting Octo-Bastard - home made octave fuzz in an old hard drive

30th January 2018 at the Edinburgh University Collection of Historic Musical Instruments, St Cecilia’s Hall, Edinburgh.

The Octave Spinet (or Octave Virginal or Ottavino) is a portable version of the Italian Spinet, widely used in private homes in the 17th and 18th centuries to accompany singing. It was pitched an octave higher than the normal, and was consequently much smaller. Mostly triangular in shape, some are rectangular.

This instrument was made in 1710 by Petrus Michael Orlandus in Italy. The shape is triangular.

Octave Spinets/Virginals are assigned the number 314.122-6-8 in the Hornbostel-Sachs classification of musical instruments ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornbostel-Sachs ), indicating:

3 = Chordophone. Instruments where the sound is primarily produced by the vibration of a string or strings that are stretched between fixed points.

31 = Simple Chordophones. Instruments which are in essence simply a string or strings and a string bearer

314 = Board Zither. Instrument uses a string bearer that is shaped like a board, or is the ground.

314.1 = Instrument with strings parallel to the string bearer.

314.12 = Instrument has a resonator.

314.122 = Box Zither. Instrument has a resonator made from slats.

314.122-6-8 = Strings are caused to vibrate by plectrum and keyboard.
