Showing the pad after being partially torn away; you can see the brass "snap" sewed into the bottom of the pad. At the time this pic was taken, I didn't know that the octave pip pads actually had snaps in them. I assumed they were just glued in, so when I tried to remove them the snap stayed snapped in place and the top part of the pad tore away.

The Monument to Octave Gréard, located in Square Samuel-Paty, was inaugurated in 1909 and sculpted by Jules-Clément Chaplain. Gréard (1828–1904) was a key figure in 19th-century French education reform, instrumental in implementing Jules Ferry’s laws on free, secular, and mandatory primary education. The memorial features architectural elements by Jean-Camille Formigé, a bust of Gréard and a relief depicting a woman teaching a child.

Square Samuel-Paty, tucked between the Sorbonne and Musée de Cluny was long known as Square Paul-Painlevé, honoring the mathematician and former prime minister. In 2020, its eastern ection was renamed Square Samuel-Paty to commemorate the teacher murdered for defending freedom of expression—transforming the square into a civic tribute to education, secularism, and liberty.

Whistles all fixed and reassembled. I tuned them by blowing in the end, just to verify that they could all sound. Then I adjust 'em so that they all tooted without overtones. Not sure how close they are to actual notes, but those fine adjustments will be made later!

The Octave Clavichord in a small, portable version of the Clavichord. It is sounded at octave pitch which enables the small size.

This instrument was made in first half of the 17th century, and has been attributed to Johann Christoph Leo of Augsburg, Germany. It is Triple-fretted. With a fretted Clavichord many same strings the same one can produce more than a single notes by making the tangents strike at different distances along from the bridge.

To compare the size of this Octave Clavichord with the regular Clavichord, see this photo (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/50074591021/). The Octave instrument is in the top right of the photo.

Clavichords are assigned the number 314.122-4-8 in the Hornbostel-Sachs classification of musical instruments ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornbostel-Sachs ), indicating:

3 = Chordophone. Instruments where the sound is primarily produced by the vibration of a string or strings that are stretched between fixed points.

31 = Simple Chordophones. Instruments which are in essence simply a string or strings and a string bearer

314 = Board Zither. Instrument uses a string bearer that is shaped like a board, or is the ground.

314.1 = Instrument with strings parallel to the string bearer.

314.12 = Instrument has a resonator.

314.122 = Box Zither. Instrument has a resonator made from slats.

314.122-4-8 = Strings are caused to vibrate by a keyboard and hammers.
