The objective of CESI is to create a network and community of top level scholars working on Chinese economic development. This initiative is currently co-sponsored by the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, UC Berkeley IGov – Institutions and Governance Program at the Institute for International Studies, the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University, the Guanghua School of Management at Peking University and the Institute for Emerging Market Studies at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The Summer Institute is organized in collaboration with the BREAD, NBER and CEPR networks of academic economists.
The 3-day workshop intends to bring together the best scholars working on China in China, the US and Europe with other top level scholars who have an interest in working on China in the future. During the workshop, there will be seminar presentations and free time to allow scholars to interact and explore the possibility of doing joint research projects. Senior scholars who will attend will be available for consultations with junior scholars. Afternoon sessions will give the opportunity to a select group of young scholars and Ph. D students to present their work.

The objective of the 2019 Adebayo Adedeji Memorial Lecture, therefore,,is to raise issues that will help policymakers to
disentangle the hype from reality in order for them to make evidence-based and reality-informed policy choices and decisions. The Lecture will interrogate ideas, identify action areas, and propose tangible suggestions for debate and consideration by policymakers. It will help to increase awareness among African policymakers of the promise and perils of the digital economy and promote high level dialogue on these issues.

The campaign to acquire Johnston’s
Hill as a reserve was led by Mr S.S.B.
Fletcher and Mr George Penlington,
both long time residents of Karori.
Johnston’s Hill was officially opened
as a public recreation domain in the
middle of World War II, 28 March 1942.
It was named after John Johnston who purchased the land from the first pakeha owner Judge Chapman.
Johnston, a Scottish settler with his wife, arrived in Wellington in 1843. The “lookout” was named after Mr Fletcher. Mr Penlington’s name was given to the main track through the bush – an appropriate recognition of the work both men had done.

Project Objectives: Students will learn about the visually impaired, about relief, and create work that contains a variety of textures and layers that is visually dynamic.
Summary: Students learned about braille and viewed images from the ancient world. These places included India, Greece, and Egypt all of which have monuments adorn with cravings that depict relief and have 3D decorations depicting animals, people, and natural elements. Based on the book students read, “Granny Torrelli Makes Soup,” the students created their own storyboard using relief elements to depict a scene from the book. Each student used recycled materials with varying colors, textures and sizes in a collage style to create a finished unique storyboard.
I happened to catch this reflection in of all things a soup bowl. I think the B&W version really draws you in and take more notice of the actual reflection. You will notice inside the circles are actually reflections of branches outside. They bounced off a lantern on my countertop through a colander into the bowl of soup, left to soak. I thought it looked so interesting and could not pass up putting it on here.

The objective behind this photo is to take an ugly picture of something beautiful, and in my opinion, flowers, leaves, and pretty much all aspects of nature are some of the most beautiful things in the world. To make this an ugly photograph, I primarily wanted to make it as dark as I could, while keeping the subject somewhat identifiable. I achieved this by using a slightly fast shutter speed and moderate ISO. The reason why I said the subject is somewhat identifiable is because I also wanted to use somewhat of a neutral aperture so the subject isn't exactly clear.

Objective 3: Elements and Principles of Design
Texture: This photo contains many different textures, the rocks create large bumps, the mud itself is not smooth but bumpy, and there are small pieces of grass that create a sharp look. When texture is added it adds interest to the photo, because it gives the photo more to look at.
Line: This photo has a curved leading line. The edge of the water and the mud creates the curved leading line. The line starts at the bottom left corner and curves along to the top left corner, the curve in the line creates a sense of beauty and elegance.
Colour: The colour scheme in this photo is monochromatic. The photo is full of all different shades of brown in the mud, the water, the leaf, and even the few pieces of grass. The monochromatic colour scheme helps to tie together all the pieces of the photo.
Form: This photo was shot with side lighting. When side lighting is used it creates shadows on one side of the object. When these shadows are formed it gives the object a 3D effect which is form.
Objective 4: Lighting
The type of line that was used in this photo was side lighting. The day this photo was taken was an overcast day so the sun was slightly diffused. In the photo you can see that the sun is hitting in the top right corner. I chose to take the photo with a side view because there are so many parts to it and the side view really helped to bring out all of the pieces.
Objective 5: Post Production (ex. dust/spot removal, resize, contrast, white balance, sharpening, borders, etc.)
Corrections/adjustments made:
Sharpening: Sharpening was used to help define the photo’s edges.
Contrast: I used contrast to help give further definition between the lighter and darker areas.

Objective 6: Critique
I think that this photo is a good photo that used some of the skills I know. The strongest elements I used in this photo were texture and form. I think the texture worked well because it was not just in one area in the photo, but it was spread out throughout the entire photo. The form was well defined because of the lighting that I was able to use. The areas were not flat, but all different heights so form worked very well. The curved leading line was included in the elements of design used, but it was not strong. The line does not lead to anything specific, instead it just leads from one end of the photo to the other. In the future I would adjust my camera angle to get a stronger leading line. I think the overall feeling in this photo works well because it is relatable. The water and mud is something that we see every year in the spring and most people strongly dislike it, but when you get close enough you can see that there is beauty in something that most people think of as gross weather conditions.
