Project 3: Horned Head: Line Wire and the Body

Objective:

Create a wearable 3D wire structure inspired by the animal/insect kingdom. The final piece will not be a replica of any single animal/insect appendage, but a hybrid of different sources of inspiration exploring the use of line to create 3D space.

Consider the following:

-Use an appendage as a point of departure to construct a form that you can wear over your head.

-Create volume and structure with line.

-Through research, drawings, and small wire models, create a structurally sound, wearable sculpture out of only wire.

-To understand the function of the horns you have designed and how it can transition into the human body.

-It may be of any scale. Grow upwards, out, or hand down as far as you would like.

-You must be able to strap in on securely enough to wear the form while moving around.

Drawing/Design:

Animals and insects have many other appendages than humans (tails, wings, beaks, claws, horns, etc). You will start this assignment by doing research on different animal/insect/human appendages. Many linear sketches from different viewpoints of the appendages will be necessary to explore how they would transition onto the human body. Wear-ability of you piece is very important, and the piece must be able to be taken on and off.

While designing, pay close attention to how and if the appendage moves. Movement isn’t required, but it (or the suggestion of movement) can be an interesting element adding to the line quality of your piece. Also, pay attention to what lines are essential in our understanding of the appendage. Some details may be required, and some may be edited or tweaked.

Wire Models:

Make wire models of your drawings so you have a clear understanding of the form before you start your full scale pieces. From there you will start on the construction of your pieces through bending, twisting, and cutting wires and brazing them together. After construction, you will be applying a thin layer of tracing paper that will become the “skin” of the appendage.

Helium stick: The objective was for the cadets to bring a long stick down to knee level at the same time.

Project Objectives: Students will learn about illuminated manuscripts and use color,

pattern, and shape to illuminate their own letters of their name.

Summary: Students briefly discussed the origins of illuminated manuscripts in the

medieval times and about shapes and patterns common to Arabic calligraphy and Arabic

Art. Students also viewed contemporary patterns and compared them to patterns and

decorations that can be found on ancient manuscripts. Using stencils and free-hand

drawing, students created the first letter of their name, their initials, or their full name.

After completing their letters, students made individual decorations and patterns in and

around the letters to make a unique composition that highlights their name.
