Abrams M1A1 Tanks advance toward their objective with M113AS4 Armoured Personnel Carriers, during exercise Chong Ju.

Mid Caption:

The roar of the venerable RAAF F-111 was heard in the Goulburn valley for one of the last times this week (12-13 May 10).

Two of the Amberley- based aircraft supported the Army’s firepower and manoeuvre demonstration at Puckapunyal Military Area, called EXERCISE CHONG JU.

EX CHONG JU is named after a series of offensive actions by the 3rd Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) on 29 October 1950 against North Koreans, during which infantry company advances were supported by US Army tanks and artillery.

Artillery from 53 Independent Battery fired 105mm rounds in support of the biannual exercise. The battery usually supports courses run by the School of Artillery.

53 Independent Battery was the only Australian battery to bring its guns to bear against the Japanese during the Battle of Kokoda in 1942.

Besides the effect of artillery and aircraft, EX CHONG JU demonstrated M1A1 Abrams tanks, M113AS4 armoured personnel carriers (APCs), ASLAV and the Javelin Medium Defensive Fire Support Weapon. All of these weapon systems are available to an Australian combat team when it employs synchronised arms effects.

From a dense treeline, tanks and armoured personnel carriers (APCs) advanced to their target, called Objective Spike.

The M113AS4 is an updated APC, and features improved armour and cross country capability that allows it to keep up with the M1A1 Tank.

The assaulting force made short work of is objective, and clearly demonstrated the potency of the modern Australian combat team.

EX CHONG JU is a training activity for the Combat Officer Advanced Course, which trains combat arms officers on combined arms tactics.

The primary objective of FUNDOO is to impart to children those skills that are essential for life, but not necessarily taught in school. The classes seek to teach children to love learning for its own sake, and to develop a scientific and questioning temperament. FUNDOO Concept is based on learning through experience and experimentation, and teaches students how to learn. These classes do all this in a fun filled manner, incorporating plenty of activities and games that engage the children and stimulate their minds.

The first participants of Real Thaw 2022 have landed in Beja

Beja Air Base, the headquarters of Real Thaw 2022 (RT2022), has already started to welcome the first participants of the exercise.

Seven countries will be present at the RT22: Portugal, Belgium, Spain, the United States, France, Lithuania and the Netherlands, with about a thousand soldiers expected. 378 military personnel have started the in-processing phase, so far.

In-processing is composed of different administrative phases that may vary depending on the logistical needs of the participants. This process is important, as it is the first impression that all participants have of the organization of the exercise.

The military committed to RT22 say they have good expectations, saying that they hope to “improve interoperability with participating countries” and that “it is a privilege to be able to work with different armed forces, observe and understand how they work.”

These expectations are in line with the main objective of the exercise, which is to prepare soldiers from the Air Force, the Navy and the Army, and from the participating countries, to act in joint and combined operations, enhancing interoperability between them all.

The multinational exercise will take place between June 26th and July 8th and has the participation of 54 aircraft and national forces from the Air Force, the Navy and the Army.

It occurred to me while lying in bed this morning, that I could use the cap from a microscope objective holder to mate a microsope objective lens with some sort of T-mount tube. It works!

The camera body is just for show, normally it would go on the camera that took the picture.

The Millennium Link was an ambitious £84.5m project with the objective of restoring navigability across Scotland on the historic Forth & Clyde Canal and Union Canal, providing a corridor of regenerative activity through central Scotland.

A major challenge faced, was to link the Forth and Clyde Canal, which lay 35m (115ft) below the level of the Union Canal. Historically, the two canals had been joined at Falkirk by a flight of 11 locks that stepped down across a distance of 1.5km, but these has been dismantled in 1933, breaking the link.

What was required was a method of connecting these two canals by way of a boat lift. British Waterways were keen to present a visionary solution taking full advantage of the opportunity to create a truly spectacular and fitting structure that would suitably commemorate the Millennium and act as an iconic symbol for years to come.

The Falkirk Wheel lies at the end of a reinforced concrete aqueduct that connects, via the Roughcastle tunnel and a double staircase lock, to the Union Canal. Boats entering the Wheel’s upper gondola are lowered, along with the water that they float in, to the basin below. At the same time, an equal weight rises up, lifted in the other gondola. This works on the Archimedes principle of displacement. That is, the mass of the boat sailing into the gondola will displace an exactly proportional volume of water so that the final combination of ‘boat plus water’ balances the original total mass.

Each gondola runs on small wheels that fit into a single curved rail fixed on the inner edge of the opening on each arm. In theory, this should be sufficient to ensure that they always remain horizontal, but any friction or sudden movement could cause the gondola to stick or tilt. To ensure that this could never happen and that the water and boats always remain perfectly level throughout the whole cycle, a series of linked cogs acts as a back up.

In 1966 the US Air Force formed the Attack Experimental A-X program office. In March 1967 the USAF released a request for information to 21 defense contractors for the A-X project. The objective was to create a design study for a low-cost attack aircraft. In 1969 the Secretary of the Air Force asked for detailed specifications for the secretly proposed A-X aircraft. Discussions with A-1 Skyraider pilots operating in Vietnam and analysis of the effectiveness of current aircraft used in the role indicated the ideal aircraft should have long loiter time, low-speed maneuverability, massive cannon firepower, and extreme survivability.

In May 1970, the USAF issued a modified and much more detailed request for proposals (RFP) for the aircraft. The threat of Soviet armored forces and all-weather attack operations had became more serious. Now included in the requirements was that the aircraft would be designed specifically for the 30 mm cannon. The RFP also specified an aircraft with a maximum speed of 460 mph, takeoff distance of 4,000 feet, external load of 16,000 pounds, a 285-mile mission radius, and a unit cost of $1.4 million.

Six companies submitted proposals to the USAF, with Northrop and Fairchild Republic selected to build prototypes: the YA-9A and YA-10A, respectively. General Electric and Philco-Ford were selected to build and test GAU-8 cannon prototypes.

The YA-10A first flew on 10 May 1972. After trials and a flyoff against the YA-9A, the Air Force announced its selection of Fairchild-Republic's YA-10A on 18 January 1973 for production. General Electric was selected to build the GAU-8 cannon in June 1973. The first production A-10 flew in October 1975, and deliveries to the Air Force commenced in March 1976. In total, 715 airplanes were produced, the last delivered in 1984.

The A-10 Thunderbolt II received its popular nickname "Warthog" from the pilots and crews of the USAF attack squadrons who flew and maintained it. The A-10 is the last of Republic's jet attack aircraft to serve with the USAF. The Republic F-84 Thunderjet was nicknamed the "Hog", F-84F Thunderstreak nicknamed "Superhog", and the Republic F-105 Thunderchief tagged "Ultra Hog". A less common nickname is the "Tankbuster". The saying Go Ugly Early has been associated with the aircraft in reference to calling in the A-10 early in combat.

Photographs in this collection have been produced by Alison Lowrie, Heather Do, Liz Dolinar, and Adriana Haro at request of Michael Ashley for the UC Berkeley Anthropology 136e class, Spring 2011. The purpose was to digitally document the cultural heritage of Green Gulch Zen Center with the objective of gaining better insight into the Zen Center's cultural history through the use of photographic technology.

Green Gulch Farm Zen Center (Latitude 37.86657, Longitude -122.56528), also referred to as the Green Dragon Temple, is located in Marin County, CA in a beautiful coastal valley overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Green Gulch, approximately a 10 mile drive north of San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge, is located on 115 acres surrounded by hundreds of acres of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Green Gulch is a cultural heritage site constituting of one of the three centers that form the San Francisco Zen Center founded by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi [1]. In 1972, Green Gulch was purchased from George Wheelwright, co-founder of Polaroid, as a part of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi's vision to obtain a farm near the San Francisco Bay area where a community of Zen Buddhist practitioners could communally live and practice in accompany of one another [2] [3]. Part of the Wheelwright's stipulation of the sale to the San Francisco Zen Center was that the farm must forever remain open to the public, as well as partake in agricultural awareness [4]. Green Gulch now serves as a Buddhist practice center in the Japanese Soto Zen tradition, were their endeavor is to awaken the people residing, working, and visiting the center in the bodhisattva spirit-the spirit of kindness and realistic helpfulness [1]. Green Gulch is compromised of a temple (the Zendo), organic farm and garden, guesthouse, and conference center. The center offers training and practice in Zen mediation through workshops and retreats, as well as apprenticeships emphasizing meditation practice, Buddhist teachings, and organic gardening and farming methods [5].

Photographs in this collection were captured on Sunday April 24, 2011, between 11:30 AM and 2:15 PM Pacific Time, under sunny conditions. Nixon D80 and two-Canon XSI cameras were used. A tripod was used for HDR shots. The photos were post-processed in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.

Expert Group Meeting for Least Developed Countries: Way forward on the WTO Ministerial Decision on preferential rules of origin

The objective was to discuss and brainstorm on the following topics:

- How to provide an overview of the status of preferential rules of origin and the value of the Ministerial decision on the preferential rules of origin: can we move on?

- How to provide a detailed information on the challenges in drafting preferential rules of origin, a possible UNCTAD methodology and the certification requirements related to origin?

The various options and modalities to bring forward the focus on the other issues that may be relevant in dynamic LDC agenda like trade facilitation and what are the overall prospects of an LDC package in Bali and beyond.

The final outcome of the meeting will assist UNCTAD and LDCs to identify future areas of activities and studies to be undertaken.

In the very late 1960's I was (too) keen to shoot b&w with my Exakta Varex. I had an enlarger (Opemus II) with a few objectives.

Later I changed the enlarger and got some new objectives - said to be of top quality.

Much, much later I bought at a final sale some enlarging objectives with L39 mount. They have been waiting for suitable projects.

One of the hottest discussions about enlarger objectives concerns the question 'reversing or not?'. So far I haven't experiences - and no opinion.
