The CLCC recently completed and approved our first science planning document titled, CLCC Science Strategy: Mission Alignment, as an initial step toward identifying shared conservation priorities. While the document met its stated objectives, Steering Committee (SC) members and outside reviewers have suggested the next step is to develop a framework for implementation. To carry out this step, SC members approved the use of a process called Structured Decision-Making (SDM). SDM is a formal, prescriptive, values-based method for analyzing a decision by breaking the decision into components. The specific process used in the workshop is called “PrOACT,” which refers to the decision components: Problem, Objectives, Alternatives, Consequences, and Tradeoffs. For the purposes of the CLCC, SDM provides a tool for achieving transparent, purposeful, and collaborative co-production of conservation—specifically, multi-partner landscape conservation design (LCD) for the Caribbean region.

To begin working through PrOACT the SC spent four days in El Yunque National Forest with decision support coaches Angela Romero and Mitch Aid (US FWS), Peter Freeman (USVI Independent Consulant) and Wanda Crespo (Estudio Technicos, Inc).

The objectives of this face to face meeting were to (1) introduce participating SC members to the SDM process so that they are comfortable with the process, its application, and its usefulness; (2) Frame “The Problem” SC members are jointly addressing (i.e., Step 1 of PrOACT); and (3) Develop a set of actionable “Objectives” based on CLCC shared values and priorities (i.e., Step 2 of PrOACT).

Steering Committee members agreed upon the following Decision Statement:

“The Caribbean LCC Steering Committee will develop and implement coordinated, efficient, and effective landscape-scale conservation design and strategy to conserve, restore and sustain ecological and cultural resources and services and human well-being in the Caribbean inside and outside of CLCC jurisdictional boundaries. The CLCC recognizes the following constraints and uncertainties: political and social environments, finances, multiple decision making authorities, diverse values, competing priorities, and climatic and ecological dynamics.”

The CLCC Steering Committee recognized themselves as the focal decision-makers and the organizations they represent as the implementers. The decision timeframe includes a 5-10 year planning horizon, 10-20 year implementation period (to institutionalize LCD), and the impacts of decisions will range from the present to 60 years to quasi-infinite. The group also agreed that the region of interest is the “terrestrial and marine components within the EEZ of the U.S. Caribbean, and Navassa Island, with consideration of relevant drivers, policies and impacts originating in the wider Caribbean region. The wider Caribbean is defined by UNEP.”

The Steering Committee also agreed upon four Fundamental Objectives, which will frame all future collaborative efforts of the CLCC (no particular order):

Maximize use of available operational resources

Maximize public satisfaction and well-being

Maximize the structure and function of aquatic and terrestrial resources

Maximize the integrity of cultural and historic resources

The Steering Committee agreed to create Tiger Teams, or subteams with a specific short-term task, to flesh out specific objectives and indicators for each of the Fundamental objectives.

Questions on this science planning process should be directed to CLCC Science Coordinator Brent Murry.

Objective self-portrait. With happy little trees.

Not so happy me, though. I had to look very serious for my very serious self-portrait. :)

Objective 3: Elements and Principles of Design

Texture: This photo contains many different textures, the rocks create large bumps, the mud itself is not smooth but bumpy, and there are small pieces of grass that create a sharp look. When texture is added it adds interest to the photo, because it gives the photo more to look at.

Line: This photo has a curved leading line. The edge of the water and the mud creates the curved leading line. The line starts at the bottom left corner and curves along to the top left corner, the curve in the line creates a sense of beauty and elegance.

Colour: The colour scheme in this photo is monochromatic. The photo is full of all different shades of brown in the mud, the water, the leaf, and even the few pieces of grass. The monochromatic colour scheme helps to tie together all the pieces of the photo.

Form: This photo was shot with side lighting. When side lighting is used it creates shadows on one side of the object. When these shadows are formed it gives the object a 3D effect which is form.

Objective 4: Lighting

The type of line that was used in this photo was side lighting. The day this photo was taken was an overcast day so the sun was slightly diffused. In the photo you can see that the sun is hitting in the top right corner. I chose to take the photo with a side view because there are so many parts to it and the side view really helped to bring out all of the pieces.

Objective 5: Post Production (ex. dust/spot removal, resize, contrast, white balance, sharpening, borders, etc.)

Corrections/adjustments made:

Sharpening: Sharpening was used to help define the photo’s edges.

Contrast: I used contrast to help give further definition between the lighter and darker areas.

Objective 6: Critique

I think that this photo is a good photo that used some of the skills I know. The strongest elements I used in this photo were texture and form. I think the texture worked well because it was not just in one area in the photo, but it was spread out throughout the entire photo. The form was well defined because of the lighting that I was able to use. The areas were not flat, but all different heights so form worked very well. The curved leading line was included in the elements of design used, but it was not strong. The line does not lead to anything specific, instead it just leads from one end of the photo to the other. In the future I would adjust my camera angle to get a stronger leading line. I think the overall feeling in this photo works well because it is relatable. The water and mud is something that we see every year in the spring and most people strongly dislike it, but when you get close enough you can see that there is beauty in something that most people think of as gross weather conditions.

Zooming down deer trails in search of the fleeing herd. With such focus and momentum coming at me, I snapped the photo quickly and got out of the way.

Objects and Symbolism

Grouping of objectives from a collaborative all-dayer evolving a health and wellness proposition.

My first British objective marker for Flames of War.

I used a large base, a single supply wagon, 2 British miniatures and some "lava".

I glued the two wheel and the pole onto the wagon, then I cut one wheel in half and cut the bases from the two soldiers and the horse.

I then smeared lava onto the base and pressed the models into it..

When Eventologists were asked to create a bespoke theming for the #Festival of Colour Conference for #Westmill Foods, we decided to wow guests with a spectacle of colours.

#Multi Coloured Ceiling Draping at #Athena Leicester helped to lower the ceilings and create a dramatic colour spectrum in the ceiling. The #Multi-coloured chair covers in bright colours looked like your favourite flavours of bubble gum and fit the theme of #world foods so beautifully! #Draped entrances in bright colours helped to give an ethnic twist without the need for lots of props. Eventologists developed an eclectic table centre to represent various #world themed foods. World themed centerpieces that included #indian artefacts, #Arabian lanterns, #Moroccan candleholders.

Using bright colours work to create the scene for themed events but also can be used at conferences and corporate events to make an impact.

The venue was an array of multi-colours – just as the song goes ‘I can see a rainbow, see a rainbow too’. The #conference theming fit perfectly with the brief of Festival of Colour.

If you’re organising a #bespoke themed event, call Eventologists to discuss ideas and options to make your event to theme, to target and to objective.

SCOS Objective 8.01: Examine the reasons why the United States remained neutral at the beginning of World War I but later became involved.

This is a great image to use to teach students both about the effects that political propaganda can have on a society as well as demonstrate how this picture is a good representation American attitudes towards Germany as the war progressed and their growing insistence of joining the war on the Allies behalf.

This is the finished version of this image.

The biggest difference is that the dull coat has removed the shininess.

UNEP has provided remote and real-time advice to the Government of Nepal, international agencies, and the UN system on dealing with the environmental issues linked to the the earthquake. UNEP also actively participated in a Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) completed in June 2015.

In order to ensure that environmental issues are addressed during the reconstruction process, UNEP is working closely with the World Wildlife Fund for Nature on a rapid environmental assessment to inform the recovery process. In addition, UNEP has also facilitated the establishment of a coalition between WWF, International Union for Conservation of Nature and the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), with the objectives of promoting good environmental management principles and promoting healthy ecosystems in the reconstruction progress.
