The Nugget Point Lighthouse, located on the Catlins coast of southeast South Island, is one of the more scenic lighthouses in New Zealand. It's certainly in a wild spot!
My experience with some EPIC light at Nugget Point.

A wild Yellow-eyed Penguin (Megadyptes antipodes) makes its way out of the ocean. This species of penguin is named for the band of color on the head near the eyes. They are unfortunately an endangered species; there are estimated to be only 1,500 breeding pairs in the world. We were fortunate enough to see about 8-10 individuals in this one spot.

Nugget Point is one of the most iconic landforms on the Otago coast. Located at the northern end of the Catlins coast down the road from Kaka Point, this steep headland has a lighthouse at its tip, surrounded by rocky islets (The Nuggets).
Description borrowed from natureandco.co.nz:
This is one of the best known landmarks on the Catlins Coast. The lighthouse is located at the end of the narrow headland, which is now a scientific reserve. The views are spectacular, and the area has a very rich marine wildlife. This is the location of one of mainland New Zealand's largest fur seal colony, and the only place where all three fur seals, Hooker's sea lions and sea elephants coexist. There are also colonies of yellow-eyed penguins and blue penguins. Other seabirds include spotted shags, sooty shearwaters, and gannets. Royal spoonbills nest on one of the islets.

Nugget Point is one of the most iconic landforms on the Otago coast. Located at the northern end of the Catlins coast down the road from Kaka Point, this steep headland has a lighthouse at its tip, surrounded by rocky islets (The Nuggets). The point is home to many seabirds, including penguins, gannets and spoonbills, and a large breeding colony of fur seals. Roaring Bay, on the south coast of the tip of Nugget Point, is home to a small colony of yellow-eyed penguins.
Nugget Point had been considered a significant danger in particular to small vessels trading along the coast to the Clutha River. The lighthouse was built in 1869 and started operating on 4 July 1870. The tower was constructed from locally quarried stone and stands 249 ft above the water. Originally powered by an oil burner, it was converted to a 1000 W lamp in 1949 with electricity provided by a diesel generator until the 1960s, when the lighthouse was connected to mains electricity. It was automated in 1989 and is computer-monitored and operated by Maritime New Zealand.
