Nugget Point lighthouse, morning light from the trail to the lighthouse (itself closed to the public, and sadly as is the best viewpoint on top of the hill). The top of the hill to the right, not visible in the photo, has one of the best coastal views on the island, but the track is closed by "No entry" signs, common in Russia, Egypt or Yemen, but NZ? What's the secret I ask kiwis?
From Wiki: Nugget Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse at Nugget Point in the Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is owned and operated by Maritime New Zealand.
The light was built in 1870 and was originally fueled by oil. In 1949 the oil lamp was replaced with an electric one powered by a local diesel generator. This was subsequently replaced by a connection to the mains grid although the original lens for the light is still in place and used to this day. The light was fully automated in 1989 and is now managed from a control room in Wellington.
This is a really cool spot! With the lighthouse, those islands and lots of wildlife there's no shortage of things to photograph! This is a slightly different composition from the Nugget Point shot I posted a few weeks ago. Trying to decide whether I like this one or the one without the foreground rock in it...
The night before I awoke at 3 am from quite an intriguing dream.
I got up and shot 3 exposures basically in my sleep of The Catlins coastal regions skies with no foreground and only the starscapes in the frame.
Another hour went by after that and my alarm went off and I find myself wanting more sleep, so I snoozed for another half an hour...
Eventually when waking up... 30 minutes later than planned..
I raced from the camping site to the lookout point. Grabbed my camera gear and ran up the 900m cliffside to this point.
I was surprised to find two other German photographers further behind my current composition up the cliff side where there was clearly no path...
I took this shot in a hurry and still made it in time to get the sun peaking out from the horizon at the lookout point further up this trail.

An amazing sunrise at Nugget Points, Catlins, New Zealand.

Nugget Point is one of the most iconic landforms on the Otago coast. Located at the northern end of the Catlins coast down the road from Kaka Point, this steep headland has a lighthouse at its tip, surrounded by rocky islets (The Nuggets). The point is home to many seabirds, including penguins, gannets and spoonbills, and a large breeding colony of fur seals. Roaring Bay, on the south coast of the tip of Nugget Point, is home to a small colony of yellow-eyed penguins.

A good way to see Nugget Point lighthouse is to follow the "Southern Scenic Route" and "Heritage Trails" from Balclutha to Invercargill through the Catlins area. From Balclutha, drive to Kaka Point. From there a gravel road leads to Nugget Point. A 15 minute walk takes you out along a spectacular track to the lighthouse.
I was staying the night in Kaka Point. A small tiny village were not much was going on and about 8km from the Lighthouse.
After a sunset session with some more people around me, i decided for an early rise and coming here next morning at 6am it was windy, cold and no one there. Setting up the tripod and all i could do was waiting and hoping for some good light. Lucky me two clouds were passing by on top just before the sun came out.
Enjoy....

View of Nugget point in Caitlins on South island, New Zealand. A storm is brewing in the distant and was arriving a bit after this was shot. This is the same location as this shot on a previous visit to New Zealand but under slightly different conditions.

Well what can I say about Nugget Point other than the fact that its an awesome place to shoot. Its by far the scariest place I've shot to date. I don't usually suffer from vertigo but by god this place is seriously high. Add a 50km south westerly wind to the equation and a couple spits of rain, not to mention a one meter wide shooting area and you have a recipe for disaster.
There was so much adrenaline running through my body my legs where sore for two days after the shoot.
Well anyway I finally got to sit back and admire by far my most rewarding shoot to date.
Hope you like.
Nugget point may not be the southernmost point on New Zealand but it is on the south end on the south island and there ahead there is nothing until you reach Antarctica.
It is the golden hour and the sun's light warms the scene while the waves roll in.
You should really watch this Large On Black since that brings out much more details. My pictures aren't balanced for a white background and a lot of the finer details are lost in this small format.
