Nugget Point on the South Island, NZ, between showers that were rolling through thick and fast!

We drove all day over stony roads along the coast. It was lonely, cold, windy and our car was very small and not suitable for this stony gravel roads. But our car made it and when we finally reached our first designation the sun came out! We couldn't imagine a better start for our roadtrip through the Catlins.

Shortly after taking this picture, we had to run to the car under heavy rain and very strond wind... a wind so strong that it rocked the car at standstill.

Nugget Point is one of the most iconic landforms on the Otago coast. Located at the northern end of the Catlins coast, along the road from Kaka Point, this steep headland has a lighthouse at its tip, surrounded by rocky islets (The Nuggets)

Note the lateral 'layering' of the formation of the large nugget in this pic. I found it fascinating.

Located at the northern end of the Catlins coast down the road from Kaka Point, this steep headland has a lighthouse at its tip, surrounded by rocky islets (The Nuggets). The point is home to many seabirds, including penguins, gannets and spoonbills, and a large breeding colony of fur seals. Roaring Bay, on the south coast of the tip of Nugget Point, is home to a small colony of yellow-eyed penguins.

The Milky Way - a 1 minute exposure of the stars from Nugget Point, just outside Queenstown, New Zealand.

These rocky islets form the 'nuggets' at Nugget Point. It's a wild place, with nesting for the extremely rare yellow-eyed penguin (Hoiho), as well as seals, sea lions, elephant seals - and loads of seabirds. Gorgeous place, and unspoiled.

Royal Spoonbill (Kotuku Kutupapa):

When tides are high silky white Kotuku Kutupapa perch sheltered and protected on the rock nugget pictured. Shy and graceful, they fly with the tide to spoon their bills in shallow Catlins estuaries (hence the name 'Spoonbill')
