Nugget Point is an iconic landform on the Otago coast, located at the eastern side of the Catlins.
Although the sky was cloudness above me when I was at Nugget Point at about 5am in December 2020 to capture the sunrise, there was a thick layer of cloud at the horizon that prevented the sun from coming through. However, once the sun had risen high enough and started to show itself above the clouds, the scene became compelling enough for a photograph.

At Nugget Point the rock-stacks lend a rugged air to an already wild and isolated stretch of coast.

Nugget Point along the coast of New Zealand's South Island has an amazing and beautiful view over the Pacific Ocean. On this morning, I got up before dawn to to photograph sunrise and the skies filled with a multitude of colors.

Looking out to sea from Nugget Point. I tried to capture its simplicity and beauty as the light appeared. Olga
Nugget Point, Catlins, New Zealand
While we were staying 2 nights at Kaka Point we popped out to Nugget Point to shoot the moonrise ( didn't happen ) and sunset ( didn't happen ). But sometimes if you hang around in the right spot, the right time arrives.

Nugget Point / Tokata at the northern end of the Catlins, Otago, New Zealand takes its English name from the rocky islets, here highlighted in late afternoon sunlight, which were named by early whalers as "The Nuggets". The Maori name, Tokata, translates as rock.
The lighthouse first operated on 4 July 1870.

Nugget Point
New zealand
Heading off to Sydney en route to New Zealand tomorrow- posts will be scattered here and there but I'll try to keep the 52 project going (will definitely be taking photos, just may not be posting!)
Excitement is building within!!!
Nugget Point is home to an iconic lighthouse and stunning coastline on the Otago Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. The Nugget shaped rocks and seals below the lighthouse are easily viewed from the large platform just below the lighthouse and you can also view Roaring Bay to the South.
It is only a short walk to the lighthouse and viewing platform. The lighthouse was first lit on 4 July 1870 and the tower is constructed from locally quarried stone. The period when this was built was a busy era in NZ with many lighthouses built to help make our coastline safer.
The lighthouse designer James Balfour actually travelled from England with the lighting equipment in 1863, as it was originally intended for the another Otago lighthouse at Cape Saunders. With the delays to that project the lighting set and lenses went into Nugget Point instead.
Originally powered by an oil burner, the lamp was replaced with electric in 1949. The diesel generator was replaced in the 1960s by connection to the main electricity grid. Then in 2006, the light was replaced with an LED beacon, and from 2020 the light is now powered from solar panels.
It is a great location for night photos, unfortunately it was not clear when we visited, and the moon was also rising, however quite happy with my image. The panorama is three frames stitched together. Would love to revisit again on a clear night with no moon.
At the bottom of New Zealand's South Island is a rugged, sparsely populated area known as the Catlins.
One of the most iconic sites in the Catlins is the lighthouse, overlooking Nugget Point.

Nugget Point is one of the most iconic landforms on the Otago coast. Located at the northern end of the Catlins coast, this steep headland has a lighthouse at its tip, surrounded by rocky islets (The Nuggets). A good way to see Nugget Point lighthouse is to follow the "Southern Scenic Route" and "Heritage Trails" from Balclutha to Invercargill through the Catlins area. From Balclutha, drive to Kaka Point. From there a gravel road leads to Nugget Point. A 15 minute walk takes you out along a spectacular track to the lighthouse.
I was staying the night in Kaka Point. A small tiny village, about 8km from the Lighthouse. After a sunset session with some people around me, i decided for an early rise the next morning. At 6am it was windy, cold and no one there. Setting up the tripod and all i could do was waiting and hoping for some good light.
Enjoy....

This image concludes my New Zealand series. What an incredible trip it was, I only wish I had some company to share the moments with........maybe next time, because there definitely will be a next time!
This week I received some fantastic news that my astro shot from Nugget Point was awarded Champion image at the 2017 Laurie Thomas New Zealand Landscape competition. This is pretty special for me, I feel really quite honoured to have my image selected from among such an outstanding field of images, and looking back at previous winners is quite humbling.
This version was shot about 15 minutes earlier and includes a bit more of the Aurora on the right of the image than the 'original': gibsondesignnz.wixsite.com/photography/fullscreen-page/co... - please get in touch if you would like a print.
After a couple of really hideous days' weather I'm hoping that perhaps we'll get some nice days soon and I can drag the camera out somewhere...
Thanks for looking.
Much to my disappointment, I arrived at this location for the crack of dawn only to be greeted with a cloudy sunrise :(
Thankfully I was staying at Kaka point which is about 6km from here and decided I would return for sunset, which was just amazing......only I'm still trying to work out how to process those images.
Not sure if I like this in sepia, but I was getting bored of plain BW's......what do you think??
Thank you for the nice comments and faves on my NZ series so far, its been lovely reading them all, I just hope you're not getting too bored, although I am trying my best to keep my uploads varied :).
Have a wonderful day......nearly the weekend, yay!

Very picturesque lighthouse, in the list for every photographer traveling in South Island of New Zealand
We found this beautiful scene in front of Nugget Point lighthouse on the south island of New Zealand.
After spending a rather cold and cloudy day in Dunedin we made our way to Te Anau via the Catlins Coast which is incredibly beautiful. We intend to spend more time there on our next trip to New Zealand!
At the bottom of New Zealand's South Island is a wild, rural area known as the Catlins. One of the most iconic sites in the Catlins is the lighthouse, overlooking Nugget Point. I climbed to this vantage point just as the fog started to retreat. Until then, the lighthouse was not even visible.

A poor planning during our last September 2015 trip. We arrived at The Nuggetpoints in the late evening. Unfortunately, this spot is geographically located facing to the south-east coast of South Island (literally is sunrise spot). I snapped this photo on my way back to parking lot. It could be an ordinary photo for others, but meaningful enough for me "PLAN YOUR TRIP"
This, I think, is one of the most amazing places in New Zealand. I was really looking forward to visiting this place, but admist one of the biggest snowfalls in New Zealand, snugged up in the Catlins and watching the wind and rain pour in, I never thought i'd get a good shot of this place. The waterfalls were completely overwhelmed and muddy, it was freezing cold and windy... but for some reason the sun shone, the clouds parted and I got this shot of the lighthouse. What is even more amazing is that a rainbow came out towards the left which I captured with the LInhof and so I really hope it came out ok with the wind howling against the tripod. Afterwards, we went up to the lighthouse and over a wooden ledge and the sound the wind made was like a jet engine.
After this shot we went into a small little hotel and ate an wesome meal of seafood and pints of Speights.
Oh mannn.
So more info regarding this shot - I think this is the perfect shot with regards to balance, focal points, leading lines and my favourite subject, the ocean. The cross light has a nice feel to it, although it could be better given the rocks in the water are darker, but at the same time I really like being able to see the shadow at the edge of the cliff to the right in the water. I did saturate this photo a little, as I'm sick of seeing professional photos that are clearly unnatural and could not exist without some saturation added to convey "their perception of the photo with their own eyes" or something... so i'll see what other people think.
