Fungus Workshop Leather Craft
I learned leather craft from a few books but I felt kind of lonely just doing things I like all by myself. Thanks to Bubi Au Yeung, a figurine artist, who told me about Fungus Workshop, so I signed up for a beginner's class, two lessons passed and I got to know stuffs I didn't learn from books, plus knowing these passionate people who enjoy life and craft genuinely, which is kind of rare in a city like Hong Kong.
Each classmate choose what he/she would like to do from a bunch of samples. I chose to do something in the line of stationery (later I will do a camera/laptop messenger bag). Their template was a notebook cover, but I decided to make it a GTD index card holder. After finishing it, I decided to add a notebook for note taking and an antique key to nostalgize the whole thing.
For all leather projects I did, improvisation in the last minute seems to add beautiful touches to a plain project. As you can see, the enclosure here doesn't wrap the back of the cover to the front, instead it leaves the back wide open so I can dangle the whole notebook or even hook it up to my messenger bag.
Instead of a Moleskine notebook, I put a Rhodia notebook inside just because of its bright orange color, to lighten up a bit. However, I hate the fact that the PU cover of Rhodia discolored after just 6 months from my acquisition of it. In addition, it just doesn't lie flat like a Moleskine does when opened. Anyhow, the discoloration did added the raw and battered look I like.
For those of you who are in Hong Kong and hunger for leather craft, I highly recommend Fungus Workshop. Hoiming and Baldwin, Grace and Philip, all four are friendly souls you can chat with and learn from. I am so happy Hong Kong is catching up with Japan and Taiwan in leather crafting. Keep it up Fungus!

The notebook laid out on the floor, approximately four metres long. This will be part of the WOA exhibition "Red" this opens on 6th February 2016.
The 'Red Notebook' is a series of woodland studies. Each book is about four metres long. These works are a development of my recent 'plein air' paintings and concern both memory and observation.This work is comprised of two concertina notebooks drawn in mixed media, using ink, gouache, graphite and charcoal. The basis for these two scroll-like drawings is Simon's Wood near Crowthorne, Berkshire and Badbury Clumps near Faringdon. Much of my work between 2011 and 2015 was painted out of doors ('plein air') with no reference to photographs or subsequent studio alteration. These drawings, although largely begun from observation, were worked on over a longer period of time, each taking on their own life. By using touches of red and rose madder washes I was able to pick out certain characteristics of the winter woodlands. The mark making was also an emotional and even physical response to the immediate environment. Unlike my recent paintings they do not employ one vanishing point but rather are like a frieze which can envelope the field of vision. I placed both works on the ground within the woodland. They actually became wet with the raindrops and were in some way connected with the place that a purely imaginary work could not be. Both works are slightly different in technique, one more fiery and the other slightly more subdued. They were painted and drawn in January, which this year has been unusually warm and wet. Like much of my work, they concern atmosphere and an engagement with the natural world.
The brighter of the two drawings also connects the tree and undergrowth forms with Red Coral or maybe human veins and blood. However, I don't see either work as overtly symbolic or necessarily a comment upon contemporary events. It remains my concern to express nature in as vital and vibrant a way as possible and to fully engage with the experience of looking hard at what's out there. I like the idea that a drawing like this can be cinematic and without a beginning or an end, that the work can envelop and absorb which is akin to one's experience in the woodland itself.

This is the notebook of Officer Anthony Karnowski of the Cleveland police department, given to me for my birthday by my old friend Alan.
I can't find out much about Karnowski (apart from his WW2 records, which say that he was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, and had had four years of high school education before he enlisted in March, 1943). He died a couple of years ago (his last residence seems to be this house), and someone put this notebook up on eBay, along with his collection of mug shots.

When I told my poet husband the theme for this week he brought me one of his old notebooks and I got the distinct vibe that he would love to have this sticker immortalised. This one of rhe other stickers on the notebook.
Found two of my husband's grandfather's ledgers in a drawer in the garage. It reminded me so much of the Field Notes notebook, I had to photograph them together. However, Grandpa's "Field Notes" has much more cred containing, as it does, all kinds of planting and farming tables in the back, and tractor info. Mine contains dirty stories and notes on the bathroom tile.
Just thought I'd add more info in light of the additional visitors the past few days: Grandpa was a real farmer right here in Los Angeles before it got so crowded. He immigrated in 1908 from the Basque country on the border between Spain & France. He started with a dairy farm in the neighborhood of El Sereno for about 20 years, then moved to Alhambra (so his four lovely daughters would have easy access to the big city) and ran a hay farm in the nearby neighborhood of Monterey Park. There's no evidence anymore of these farms other than photos, these ledgers, and a few milk bottles and scraps of rather terrifying cattle equipment in the back of our garage.
My husband and I live in the 1936 house in Alhambra that grandpa bought to be closer to the hay farm. A friend of mine lives just down the road in what used to be the middle of the farm. It's so fascinating to me to imagine what Los Angeles used to be like - say when Grandpa arrived from France in 1908, or when his daughters were running around in 1930's LA, making shopping trips, going to movies in the old movie houses, riding the Red Cars, going over the border to Mexico for some partying.
Well, if that wasn't fun, I don't know what would be.
I bought a leather notebook cover that was just gorgeous. GORGEOUS. I wanted more. So many more! Well, at least one more. I decided to try my hand at making them and it turns out I did an okay job. Mine aren't anywhere near as sturdy as the original, but making them was super fun and they're sturdy enough.
I had a hard time finding thick leather in awesome colors. The brown one is made from some leather I already had, and it's the sturdiest. It did, however, give my corner punch (the blue thing at left) a run for its money. The other leathers are from this etsy shop. So much prettiness! The best stuff is the teal/blue pull up leather. The metallic stuff is okay, too. Suede didn't work at all, no matter how thick (way too floppy).
These are made to hold up to 4 notebooks, the larger hold Field Notes and the smaller the wee Rhodias.

Another selection from this month's trip to Iowa: notebooks filled by the Titian Sleuth. I love that quote in the middle. She writes in these journals and then completes them by writing a saying on the cover after they're filled. The quote on the blue one comes from Wendell Berry's beautiful poem.

I'm glad Midori responded very fast by accepting my suggestion to make Traveler's notebook more usable. The original open pockets can't store much. Now they plan to make a pocket with zipper than can store receipts and passport in a quite safe way. The plastic pocket can be inserted in the elastic band that holds the paper notebook

This is my stack of notebooks, most of which are Moleskine notebooks. I have written in less than a third of them, but I feel I should stock up for when I can take my trip to Polynesia or the Australian outback.
I made both these in the bookbinding class I took. Reversible robot-printed paper -- looked like scrapbooking paper. The one with the red exterior has an inner knot to the binding and the other one has an out knot.
