Chena Lake Recreation Area is a 2,000-acre/8 km2 park located 17 miles/27 km from Fairbanks, just outside of the city of North Pole.
This is one of the most successful expedition ships of the world, the Fram (norwegian, meaning "ahead !"). Fritjof Nansen (expedition leader, Otto Sverdrup (captain) and their crew of 11 men set out to reach the North Pole by letting trapped the ship in the ice of the north, hoping they get drifted to the pole by strong sea and ice streams.The expedition took 3 years (1893-1896) and they returned safely. The North Pole was not reached by them due to a stream which drifted the ship not straight north but in direction of Franz-Josef Land, located south-east to the pole, north of Nowaja Semlja.The expedition was exactly planned and prepared, the ship was able to get lifted up by the ice pressure instead of getting crushed by it. For that the hull planking had a special smooth construction which worked as it should do. Later, Roald Amundsen used this famous and sophisticated ship for further expeditions.
Nowadays the "Fram" and a lot of items belonging to these expeditions could be visited in the amazing museum of the same name, situated on Bigdøy Island in the Oslo fjord, the island which was passed by the Fram at the beginning of the expedition.

The polar ice is rapidly recessing, threatening the survival of the polar bears. No one of the powerful politicians in charge is doing anything to avoid it, at the contrary they and giant oil companies want it to increase their profit and power. Our grand children won't know what is this awesome beautiful free wildlife of the Arctic sea.
Only zodiacs can move to deeper zones where fragile glaciers are hung over the sea.....icebergs float here and there....and an eerie mist envolopes......

One of my most favorite sled dogs outside of Being There. He could be there, I'd let him, for sure, no doubt.
The good season is all to quickly coming to an end, unless by some happy miracle we get a nice dump of snow and the temps take another dive. It's hard to believe winter can go by so quickly.
We ran today and while the temps were well below freezing the sun was high and hot at mid-day and the dogs didn't much like running in it. Pickle's breathing was a bit labored even though I let him run free for most of the time. I worried a bit about him and cut his run short. The rest of us went out again but nobody seemed very motivated, so we bagged it.
It's a reminder to me that the long runs are over for Pickle, a bit hard for me to accept, but it's amazing he is so healthy just two months shy of his 14th birthday. He was really happy today and tonight. He'll still run I'm sure, but not when it's too warm, and not when it's too cold and not for the long miles. This shot was made just over 8 miles into the run, and near the end of it for Pickle.
Capturing unique and iconic images often means we are out in nature's elements and our gear is taking an abuse. One thing I find is that lenses drift out of calibration. These changes would cause focus tilt, soft edges, and flares along with other artifacts. I'm always reluctant to send lenses in for repair because it means they are out of service for a couple of weeks. However, I highly recommend biting the bullet when you notice lens artifacts since recalibration makes a huge difference!
The Subway in Zion will never cease to fascinate me. It is spring fed so there is always water flowing in the canyon.
This year, as a result of limited monsoon activities, there has not been many flash floods to bring in muddy water. The pools have remained shallow with brilliantly blue and crystally clear water!
While being amazed in the beauty, one needs to be very careful on walking along the shore....

Santa coming half way down from the North Pole and us heading half way up Pikes Peak Mt on the cog railway, made a great meeting spot. Santa and all his helpers were all there handing out lots of warming hugs, hot coco and cookies while Santa was double checking all the "good" boys and girls final christmas list. Soooo....

Among the Native inhabitants of the Bering Sea island of Nunivak it is said that when a beluga whale comes up on shore it transforms into a wolf. For this reason if you find yourself staring out to sea and there you see a pod of belugas you are advised to turn around just to be sure what or who might be behind.
Outhouse at the north pole? Brrr!

I made this snow as an experiment following a tutorial on using baking soda and shaving cream to do it.
It worked pretty good! Far nicer than having plastic bits flying around.
It was messy to mix but not messy to clean up. Rinse off the Lego pieces and wipe up the residue on the table and you are good to go.
