At 89º N, a day from our goal of reaching the geographic North Pole, we crossed paths with this nuclear powered icebreaker. Impressive, it can turn on a dime. It took 15 seconds for it to disappear.

Expedition guides marking boundaries, gangway set, we were almost ready for a celebratory walk on ice at the Geographic North Pole. Note, champagne would soon be on the ice.

The northern lights were out briefly tonite, so grabbed the camera and took a few shots.

Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations!

Heading south from the North Pole at around 89º North, I was surprised to see how fragile the sea ice was - an obvious sign of climate change. Surface temperature was just around 30º F or minus 1º C. This is a view of sea ice our ship broke up.

This is the stairway to the second story of the Old Mission lighthouse, built in 1870. The stairs get much steeper and narrower after the second floor!
