A big circular maw opens up during the aurora as purple sheets with electric green edges pulse and dance across the sky.
Taken 23 March 2023 near North Pole, Alaska.
During a flight from Osaka/Kansai (Japan) to Helsinki (Finland), we came within a few tens of kilometres of the North Pole.
There is no normal day-night cycle at the North Pole. Instead, the sun rises at the March equinox and sets at the September equinox. In between, there is either polar day or polar night. This photo was taken about 36 hours after the March equinox of 2026, so that the cloudy scene is illuminated by a very low sun.

I tried the tripod with this shot but even at minus 39 it was still to cold for anything on the tripod to work ....So I took the camera off tripod and counted to three held my breathe and took about five shots ....tomorrow hubby promises we can chase sun pictures all day ..hope the weather holds ....

Bearded seal is an interesting animal in the Arctic regiion....females are larger than males and their average nose to tail length is about 8 ft and they weigh around 400 Kgs....

I am crazy about wild irises. I was delighted to see that they are beginning to bloom in the field where we train the dogs. Choose the one you like the most.
My favorite shot I took today. Maybe because the river is not frozen and I love birch trees. Went for a walk with flickr friends along the river trail. Had a wonderful day. First lengthy walk I have been able to manage since returning home. I injured my knee while traveling (and continued to keep walking). Going to physical therapy, had x-rays and an MRI and I am hoping to avoid surgery. Getting back to this part of the river where I had been a year ago was an accomplishment for me.
