The distance between #Almora and #Pithoragarh is 115 Kms. The route is scenic. Once you reach #Chaukori after 4 and half hours of journey, stay overnight at #KMVN and proceed for #Munsiyari , famous for its location to get a glimpse of all the glorious peaks of #Himalaya . We traveled during December last week of 2016.

Sattal is at 1250-1300m height ( KMVN sign board suggests 1219 m), located in Kumaun Region of Nainital district of Uttarakhand, just 80 mins drive from Kathgodam, connected via Shatabdi trains from the National capital, Delhi.

As the name suggests, it has seven lakes , namely,

1. Panna Tal or Garud Tal

2. Naldamyanti Tal

3. Hanuman Tal

4. Sita Tal

5. Ram Tal

6. Laxman Tal

7. Sukha Tal or Bharat Tal

Also this place is not just about birding, it has other activities like camping, boating, fishing, rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking.

So far as birding is concerned, it has three different areas to explore - studio, hide and trail.

Through my various posts, i will try to explain all the three aspects of birding. I will post the butterflies and mosses as well which I clicked during the hike within forest.

Set amongst the dense forests of oak and pine trees, Sattal is among the very few of the unspoiled biodiversity in northern India.

Sattal is unique for having 500 species of resident and migratory birds, 20 species of mammals, over 525 species of butterflies and over 11,000 species of moths, beetles, bugs and other insects.

There are some small hotels and resorts catering to tourists looking mainly for birding and enjoying the nature walk.

Chaukori - Earthern Bowl of Kumaon

The kaleidoscopic hill station of Chaukori is one such place where the dreamers can turn their imaginations into reality. Besieged by the imperial Himalayas and the thick woodlands, Chaukori offers a spectacular view of the gorgeous Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot, and the Panchachuli peaks.

Built- 1843, Rebuilt- 1873

An old Anglican church with colonial architecture, St.Andrew’s church surely impresses every visitor. The church was built under the supervision of Captain Bishop in the year 1843. Many Scottish soldiers, Britishers and tea planters living in the Darjeeling area were the early worshipers of this church.

Though the church was badly damaged by an earthquake, it was rebuilt in the year 1873.

feeling spiritual - lava monastery by Nitya @ Nature Photography

One cannot miss out the Lava monastery when going to Lava. It is built on a four acre piece of land and is home to hundreds of monks who preach their beliefs there.

The monastery is old, built in 1980s and architecturally beautiful. It looks Tibetan in style and has various prayer halls, lawns, sitting areas and a huge Buddha statue. The monastery is well maintained.

Love the serenity of this place, specially in the morning hours

Gajoldoba is a small village on the western side of Teesta River close to the Baikunthapur forest. The village is in the Oodlabari area of Jalpaiguri district. Gajaldoba was famous for the dam on River Teesta that is being created for irrigation of agricultural land of North Bengal. The dam has created a large waterbody upstream which has become home to migratory birds during the winter. The natural beauty of the place with its view of the forest, river and mountain has always attracted tourists and local to the area. The barrage over Teesta river at Gajaldoba is also a major route of road connection between Dooars and Terai area of North Bengal.

Gajaldoba took increased prominence due to the state government initiate to promote mega tourism in the area. An area of more than 200 acres has been demarcated for the purpose and infrastructure is being developed. In the near future, the area is expected to become one of the high end tourist destinations of North Bengal.

The location of Gajaldoba is also quite advantageous. The place can be reached from Siliguri (30 kms, 1 hour) or Jalpaiguri town (40 kms, 1.5 hours). Oodlabari is 20 kms (45 minutes) and Gorumara National Park area is about 26 kms.
