Safdarjung's Tomb is the last enclosed garden tomb in Delhi in the tradition of Humayun's Tomb, though it is far less grand in scale. It was built in 1753- 54 as mausoleum of Safdarjung, the viceroy of Awadh under the Mughal Emperor, Mohammed Shah.

It has several smaller pavilions with evocative names like Jangli Mahal (Palace in the woods), Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace) and Badshah Pasand (King's favourite).

The complex also has a madarsa. The archaeological Survey of India maintains a library over the main gateway.

The Dhanauri Wetlands is a birdwatching area located in Thasrana, Uttar Pradesh, India. The Dhanauri Wetlands is home to over 150 Sarus cranes.

As reported in HT on May 28, 2019 , The Uttar Pradesh forest department has decided to notify the Dhanauri wetland in Greater Noida’s Gautam Budh Nagar— one of the few wetlands supporting a fairly large sarus crane population. While this is cheerful news for birders and nature-lovers in the National Capital Region, the department’s plan is to recognise only 25 hectares of the wetland’s 100ha area.

The forest department’s plan, accessed by HT, states that Dhanauri is an extremely important site for sarus cranes, which has over eight breeding pairs of sarus cranes compared to four in Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. Dhanauri hosts a non-breeding sarus crane population of about 100 birds.

Along with a proposal to notify Dhanauri under the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017, the proposal states that the International Crane Foundation will initiate a documentation of annual variation in numbers and distribution of sarus Cranes. The documentation will give information on survival of sarus crane chicks hatching in Dhanauri and spatial movement of the species.

The proposal lists sarus cranes, pheasant-tailed jacana, baya weaver, green bee-eater, marsh harrier, ashy prinia and grey heron among birds thronging Dhanauri.

But the proposal states that the “zone of influence” (an area in which developmental activities are likely to induce adverse changes in wetland structure and functioning) of the wetland is 25ha and the active wetland area is only 4.24ha. However, the National Wetland Inventory and Assessment conducted by the Space Applications Centre in 2006-07 shows the wetland is spread over a 100ha area.

“We are trying to find a solution for this. Villagers may turn hostile if there is a restriction on several activities if a larger area is notified. Most of the area here is private and the value of real estate is high,” Pramod Kumar Srivastava, divisional forest officer, Greater Noida, said. A report by the Remote Sensing Applications Centre in Uttar Pradesh also shows that the total area is about 100ha.

Anand Arya, a birder and environmentalist who has been pursuing the notification of Dhanauri wetland for years, said “This wetland is the perfect place for sarus cranes. This is why at the roosting time a flock of about 150 sarus cranes can be seen here and 4-8 nests have been seen during 2015-2017 within the wetland itself. Dhanauri is also home to over 211 species of birds — 92 migratory and 119 resident species. Dhanauri also meets the criteria of a Ramsar wetland.” The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands recognises wetlands of international significance because of their conservation value.

Activists fear many other wetlands may not be notified in their entirety. The data on how many wetlands have been notified in the country is not available.

The Supreme Court had, in 2017, directed the Centre to “identify and inventorise” all 201,503 wetlands with an area of 2.25ha captured by satellite imagery.

“Dhanauri is part of the sarus crane belt connecting with Mainpuri and Etawah. It meets the criteria of an important bird and biodiversity site (IBA),” said Nikhil Devasar, birder and author. The sarus crane is listed in the “vulnerable” category by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

Sattal is at 1250-1300m height ( KMVN sign board suggests 1219 m), located in Kumaun Region of Nainital district of Uttarakhand, just 80 mins drive from Kathgodam, connected via Shatabdi trains from the National capital, Delhi.

As the name suggests, it has seven lakes , namely,

1. Panna Tal or Garud Tal

2. Naldamyanti Tal

3. Hanuman Tal

4. Sita Tal

5. Ram Tal

6. Laxman Tal

7. Sukha Tal or Bharat Tal

Also this place is not just about birding, it has other activities like camping, boating, fishing, rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking.

So far as birding is concerned, it has three different areas to explore - studio, hide and trail.

Through my various posts, i will try to explain all the three aspects of birding. I will post the butterflies and mosses as well which I clicked during the hike within forest.

Set amongst the dense forests of oak and pine trees, Sattal is among the very few of the unspoiled biodiversity in northern India.

Sattal is unique for having 500 species of resident and migratory birds, 20 species of mammals, over 525 species of butterflies and over 11,000 species of moths, beetles, bugs and other insects.

There are some small hotels and resorts catering to tourists looking mainly for birding and enjoying the nature walk.

Devprayag - The town of Godly Confluence

The celestial town of Devprayag is positioned at an elevation of 830 meters above sea level. Devprayag is the last Prayag or the holy confluence of the Alaknanda River, from here that the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi River is known as Ganga.

The town is the seat of the pundits of Badrinath Dham. The meaning of Devprayag is Godly confluence as "Dev" man's god and "Prayag" means confluence.

Panch Prayag (Pañca prayāga) is an expression in Hindu religious ethos, specifically used to connote the five sacred river confluences in the Garhwal Himalayas in the state of Uttarakhand, India. The five prayags - prayag meaning "place of confluence of rivers" in Sanskrit - also termed as "Prayag pentad" are Vishnuprayag, Nandaprayag, Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag and Devprayag, in the descending flow sequence of their occurrence.

Chilika Lake - Asia's largest brackish water lagoon with water spread ranging from 1165 sq km m the rainy season to 906 sq km in the dry season is nestled in the heart of the coastal Odisha (Orissa). It extends from Bhusandpur in Puri district in the North to Rambha-Malud in Ganjan district in the South, separated from the Bay of Bengal by a 60 km long narrow strip of marshy islands and sand-flats.

Some of the prominent islands like Nalabana, Kalijal, Somolo, Honeymoon, Break-fast, Birds and Rajahansa inhabited by small subsistence fishermen families, are popular destinations for daily boat trips. Because of its rich bio-diversity and socio-economic importance, Chilika was designated as a Ramsar site in 1981 to afford better protection.

Chilika is recognized as one of the most important wetlands in the world because it is home to a phenomenal variety of birds. Chilika Lake offers visitors a spectacular display of its colorful avian charms in a thousand different hues presented by over 160 species in the peak season between November and February. The lake and its reed islands teem with nesting birds-white bellied sea eagles, ospreys, golden plovers, sand pipers, flamingos, pelicans, shovellers, gulls, include migratory ones flying great distances from Iran, Central Asia and Siberia.

In 1900, more than a century ago, Reverend Dr. John Anderson Graham began giving life to his dream. A dream to build an institution that manifested his love for children. A Home for orphaned and abandoned Anglo-Indian children whose only craving was for love and an opportunity to live a life of dignity. Whilst working in Edinburgh as a clerk in the Civil Service, Graham was influenced and encouraged by the Minister of his Church, the Reverend John McMurtrie, to be ordained in the Ministry of God. Following his graduation with an M.A. from Edinburgh University, he spent three years in Divinity Hall. At Divinity Hall, he developed a keen interest in the activities of the Young Men’s Guild, an organisation that sought to unite the young men of the Church in fellowship, prayer, study and service. This interest inspired Graham to consider the possibility of working with an overseas mission in one of the poorer parts of the world.

In 1887, the Young Men’s Guild decided to send a missionary of its own to a foreign land, and Graham was sent to work in Kalimpong, which was at that time, part of the Darjeeling Mission of North East India. Graham was ordained in 1889, and two days later, married Katherine McConachie, to whom he had been engaged for two years. Reverend Graham and his wife set sail for Calcutta on 21st March, 1889. For two years, Graham worked to build a new Church in Kalimpong. He also established the Kalimpong Mela – an agricultural exhibition for local farmers – as well as a silk committee to encourage the industrious locals. He also helped them establish a cooperative credit society.

There was one particular group in the Darjeeling area whose plight affected Reverend Graham more than anyone else. During his visits to the tea gardens of the Dooars in Darjeeling, he noticed groups of children who suffered deprivation and hardship. Most of them were the illegitimate sons and daughters of British tea planters and local Nepalese, Lepcha and Assamese mothers. Such liaisons were common in those days, but as the young tea planters rose to management positions, and European brides arrived in the gardens, the ’kanchis’ and their children were, more often than not, discarded to no man’s land. His heart was filled with a desire to find a solution to the problems of these Eurasian (now known as Anglo-Indian) and poor domiciled European children.

the abandoned tower

_____

The Joychandi Pahar (mountain) where Satyajit Ray shot his famous movie Hirak Rajar Deshey (1980) is also a popular picnic cum tourist spot as well as Rock climbing site.

After riding some 300-400 odd steps (did not count), one can get to see a spectacular view from the hilltop. There's a temple of Chandimata and Bajrangbali on one of the hilltop.

Nearest rail head is #Adra Junction within #Purulia District.

it is said that Dacoits used to take shelter inside this abandoned tower
