The weather (on Earth) has been ideal lately, and you might think it doesn’t impact us up here, but it does impact our pictures! Magical clear summer nights make for a carpet of city lights, and storm clouds are a nice addition to the scene. Who needs special effects when you have, well, a Space Station…

Bodie, CA

Bodie is a ghost town in the hills east of the Sierras, founded as a mining camp after gold was discovered in the area. It was a tough town in a harsh environment, where murders and hangings where common. It once had as many as 2,000 buildings including 65 saloons and 2 churches, but most were destroyed in one day by fire in 1892.

It was completely abandoned by 1950 and is now kept in a state of "arrested decay" by the California park service.

This night visit to Bodie was part of the Nocturnes Night Photography Festival at Mono Lake, hosted by Lance Keimig, Scott Martin and Tim Baskerville, and was a great time all-around.

Bob Seger "Night Moves"

For everyone of course, but especially for Mark of the parish of St. Pete, Florida. With 500 bieren to try he would be here for a while!

She has just dropped a tennis ball and waiting for me to throw it again, a never ending game.

In German, these are Nachtkerzen which literally means "night candles" I think that is a really good name. The English name, Evening Primrose, is, well, too prim. Nachtkerzen grow wild here where we live, and their behavior is pretty wild too.

AS I HAVE TRIED TO SHOW HERE, on summer/autumn nights, they suddenly pop open and glow sulfurously in the semi-darkness. One here had not yet popped.

Adding to their wild nature, Wikipedia says that "The flower structure has an invisible to the naked eye bright nectar guide pattern. This pattern is apparent under ultraviolet light and visible to its pollinators; moths, butterflies, and bees."

Lucky them.

Nachtkerzen are another plant native to North America but now growing all over the world in temperate locations.

Location: Moostal, Riehen BS Switzerland.

I have always been a bit of a night owl . It's not such a good thing when you have two small kids!

I'm off to bed. Good night Flickr peeps!

London, January 2015

Inspired by Paul G. and Simon A. decided to make my own night shot :)

Another improvised night shot, sitting camera on a couple of hardback books on the upstairs window ledge back home - not perfect and the distance (this was on long zoom) and light rain and mist made it harder, but what the heck, take what pics you can manage! Thes are the same two church towers, Saint David's (left) and Saint Mary's (right) at night that you can see in the previous daylight photo

Blacks and Whites' Carnival - Ipiales

A short 0.3/sec capture of Paris as the night began to draw in.

On the edge of sleep,

At the edge of town.

Lights flash across my eyelids,

And the rain just keeps pouring down.

Kristiansand harbour at blue hour. My hope was to capture this fantastic ship (Subsea Seven), but what grabbed my attention once I got to playing around, was the bollard in the foreground. A tripod, a bright lens and a dark filter et voila!

8" x 10" plus painted frame. sold.
