"A day without sunshine is like, you know, night ."

Walking home late this evening from my book group, passed the festive market - absolutely pouring with rain, miserable winter night. But the rain was giving the night-time pavements that reflective sheen to the lights of the festive market's food stalls, so I snapped a few very quick and rough handheld monochrome shots. Not the sharpest, but shot on the hoof as I headed to get out of the rain, so I'll take what I can get!

These little lights are in my herb garden along the front walk-way. I just love the pretty patterns they make.

Friday Frenzy Storm Photo Images captured throughout the night! First sets I was able to be outside to capture as still light rain with wind just starting to pick up! Stay tuned as I go through the night. Street scene in Cold Winter Night At a Small town near Calcutta ( Kolkata ) in the state of West Bengal in India.

Ever since I’ve been pursuing astrophotography, I’ve always wanted to take an all-night star trail image. The Winter solstice has always fascinated me, being the longest night of the year. How incredible it would be to make an all sky image on one of the longest nights of the year! Unfortunately, the weather in central Pennsylvania rarely cooperates to create such an image. On December 20, 2017, the evening sky was crystal clear and it was the day before the Winter solstice on December 21, 2017.

I set up my old Canon T2i and a Canon 8-15mm f/4L lens to capture as much of the sky as possible. Needing AC power to supply the camera all night, I had to set up in my heavily light polluted back yard. I used a homemade dew heater powered by four D cell batteries.

Away the camera went throughout the night recording the rising of the winter constellations as they arc around Polaris. I started the 30-second exposures shortly after 6 pm with the hopes of completing the sequence around 5:45 am the next morning. Despite a perfect forecast for clear skies, heavy cloud cover moved in at 4 am requiring me to cut the sequence short. I am still happy with result; it is fascinating to see the gentle arc of Polaris on this almost 10-hour exposure.

The 1080 images (Canon T2i, Canon 8-15 mm f/4L lens @ 8mm, ISO 400, f/4.5) were stacked using StarStax with final adjustments in Lightroom.

A return trip to the new track laying on the New North Mainline at Northolt at the end of the weekend of work on it. The CWR had been laid and ballasted and most work had been done. This road/rail JCB was just lifting a trolley off the line before it picked itself up and parked behind it.

A chilly night downtown.

A clear night in Queenstown on the shore of Lake Wakatipu, taken at about 23:30.

If I had waited a few more hours, Sagittarius, the brightest part of the Milky Way would have been visible just above the horizon which would've made for a better shot but I got cold.

As I was snapping some improvised night shots, sitting the camera on top of a short post that held the "press to cross" button, I heard a tram approaching. I left the camera in night mode with the shutter open and was rewarded with the blur of the moving tram pulling in next to the people standing on the platform. Not super sharp, lacking the big tripod, but for an improvised night shot I was quite happy with that

The brightest and most extensive display of noctilucent clouds so far this year, and on a par with the epic display back in the 7th July 2014. This shot was taken looking northwest over the river Don towards Bennachie.

This is Aoraki / Mount Cook Village Under the Winter Stars. There are only a few places to stay there, and they were all a lot more cozy than where I was hiking! The bigger hotel you can see there is The Hermitage. It's a great hotel with a really rich history... I definitely recommend it if you are touring New Zealand. No, this is not a paid post... haha... I never do paid posts by the way, so don't worry about that stuff.

A very cold and windy night. I had to hold the camera and tripod while I took 20 -15 second shots for this panorama. I am really surprised it worked.

Trying out tethered shooting. Wireless its clunky but reasonably effective. An equipment update incoming for sure Learned quite a bit from experiments and first run. Exciting way to get pictures!

The Calcutta night that goes off with an electric feeling beating in my heart can’t be ..........replaced!
