After a day out in Stourbridge, it was time to return back to the station.

I remembered that quick access to the station could be achieved from Foster Street, so I made my way back there.

The new Stourbridge Interchange bus station in Stourbridge. It opened a year ago in April 2012.

Don't know what the old one was like (closed 2010), but this new one looks bright and white!

The bus station has the name Stourbridge Interchange, as Stourbridge Town Station is nearby!

Network West Midlands (Centro) felt that the old station couldn't cope with the capacity, and it was redeveloped.

One of the images I often show students when talking about how technology contributed to social change in the 20th century.

Even after years of looking at this photo, I still get a sense of awe. How amazing is it that we could communicate across thousands of miles with just metal cables, some switchboards, and a human to manually connect calls with a wire!

As part of the East Kent Resignalling scheme the North Kent workstations at Ashford IECC will transfer the control of the Strood area over to the East Kent Signalling Centre at Gillingham. As part of these works and as part of the 12 car Networker scheme the layout at Strood is changing slightly to allow longer platforms to be built. Here we see 66729 'Derby County' waiting to drop ballast onto the up line. The point work Higham end of platform 3 is being moved closer to Strood Tunnel to allow the longer up platform to be built. For the next few weeks a temporary buffer stop has been installed in platform 3 to allow a maximum length of 4 coach trains to terminate from the Medway Valley. The shunt signals and platform starter from platform 2 are also being moved closer to Higham.

Instead of three different brand four port switches which I'd acquired over the ages I decided that I seriously had to sort out the network cupboard once and for all... All cables are now colour coded by type, and all connections get a gigabit port instead of just the 4 which were on the newest switch.

Blue cables are for internet conections (adsl 2+ and HyperOptic 1gbps links)

Red cables for access points (802.11g CCTV AP, 5ghz 802.11n wifi, 500mbps powerline network

Purple cables are direct runs from the various wall sockets through the flat

Yellow network cables are for the VMware server I built to replace the old NAS/Media/backup servers.

Small Group Discussion: U.S. Youth Employment Action Network: A New Mentoring Framework

For an increasing number of American youth, entering the workforce is far more challenging than they expected. Over the last several years, the unemployment rate for youth aged 16–19 has hovered around 20 percent, and a variety of sectors report being unable to fill available jobs due to applicants having insufficient skills. This growing misalignment between the demand and supply for skills means that young people will continue to be underemployed over the next decade, with young Americans aged 20–24 losing an estimated $21.4 billion in earnings. Mentoring—the pairing of a young person with a supportive nonparental adult or older peer—can prepare youth for a successful adulthood by allowing them to explore various professions, develop their skills, and stay engaged academically as they prepare for a career.

In this session, participants will:

• Learn about new mentoring models to support youth employability.

• Examine effective tools, curriculum, and methods of measurement for successful mentoring programs.

• Share best practices and lessons learned for how to provide comprehensive and culturally competent mentoring programs.

PARTICIPANTS:

Sandra Louk LaFleur, National Vice President of Program, Summer Search

Torie Weiston-Serdan, Chief Executive Officer, Youth Mentoring Action Network

The NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory installed a full network of Lightning Mapping Array (LMA) sensors on portable, solar-powered platforms to study lightning in targeted areas. Just like the Oklahoma Lightning Mapping Array (OKLMA) jointly operated by NSSL with the University of Oklahoma, the portable array will be used to map the time and location of lightning channel segments within clouds in three dimensions with high resolution. To do this, the system measures the time at which a signal radiated by a lightning channel in a very high frequency (VHF) band (the television channel 3 band) arrives at each station in the network. The times are transmitted to a central server, which computes the time, latitude, longitude, and height of the segment that radiated the signal.
