My mother has a talent for growing beautiful flowers in her garden. I saw these brilliant red dianthus blooms shortly after she had watered them.

Migratory finches - tiny birds with streaks of brown, beige, yellow and cream coloring; black wing bards. Cheery, buzzy calls fill the air when they are about. These were enjoying water out of an old tea kettle, converted to bird bath in my yard. These little ones visit us in fall and winter and will soon be gone.

Look at the beautiful bokeh! These salvia were so photogenic. Hope you have a wonderful Wednesday. HBW!

According to Audubon's field guide: This bird is found in Tennessee only briefly, during spring and fall migration; but there is no point in giving it a more descriptive name, because the bird itself is nondescript. The male makes up for his plain appearance with a strident staccato song, surprisingly loud for the size of the bird. Nesting in northern forests, the Tennessee Warbler goes through population cycles: it often becomes very numerous during population explosions of the spruce budworm, a favored food. I personally have encountered this species only once on our property. This one was looking for insects on the blooming century plant.

This species is a winter visitor and generally head to breeding grounds to the east and north of our location by late February and early March. we had a few coming in regularly to our feeders and birdbath during February 2022. This one is in typical winter (non-breeding plumage) with duller yellow shades and the black wings. I'm not sure whether it is a male or female.

Exotic imports to our region, these fallow deer have escaped a fenced ranch and occasionally visit our property. The white doe showed up with a fawn that is light tan in color. These deer typically come in a range of colors from creamy white to dark brown. Some of the adults in darker colors also sport spots.

Although this shot was from behind as they walked away, I like how the mother was looking over her shoulder to keep an eye on her little one.

I think this is a female black-chinned, possibly a juvenile male. It posed so nicely on the very end of a bare twig. Summer 2020 brought the most hummingbirds I have seen in my yard for the 12 years that we have had this property. Drought and heat made them come looking for water and nectar.

A small finch. From a distance they appear to be a plain little brown bird. A closer look reveals lots of streaks of brown, beige and white with some yellow and black thrown in. They are very friendly little birds - a couple have even landed on my husband and me when were outside working in the yard. They come to visit us in the autumn and leave in early spring. While they are around the air is filled with their high pitched tweets and buzzy songs.

Males are a powdery blue color as shown. They blue eyes and white face are helpful ID markers, as are the flashy black and yellowish-white spots (stigmata) on the leading edge of the wings. They are reportedly common in the southwestern part of the US, including Texas. To my knowledge I have not seen or photographed a female of this species but they must be present.

Rufous hummingbird holding his ground against a would be intruder to his space. The other one, I believe a juvenile ruby-throat, was not successful in taking claim of the branch. The rufous hummingbird birds with brilliant orange coloring were eye-catching in my yard this year.

Que dire...

J'ai profité de la manne et l'énergie passagère :)

This series may be my favorite of the bird pictures I took while in Big Bend National Park during June 2019. This cactus wren landed next to me and posed next to the beautiful cholla cactus flower. Notice that the bird's feet do not seem to be bothered by the prickly cactus thorns.

Small, bold patterned butterfly. I only saw a few of these and they seemed to have a preference for the yellow flowers. I believe the yellow flowers are commonly known as huisache daisy (aka butterfly daisy or honey daisy)

Explore #86

I found iguanas of various sizes. I believe the mature males are darker with well defined stripes and ridges along the spine. The females and young ones have smoother backs, paler coloring and are smaller. These were all happily residing on a golf course in Cancun, Mexico during April 2022.

The northern jacana or northern jaçana (Jacana spinosa) is a wader which is known as a resident breeder from coastal Mexico to western Panama, and on Cuba, Jamaica and Hispaniola in the Caribbean. It sometimes known to breed in Texas, United States, and has also been recorded on several occasions as a vagrant in Arizona. The jacanas are a group of wetland birds, which are identifiable by their huge feet and claws, which enable them to walk on floating vegetation in the shallow lakes that are their preferred habitat. In Jamaica, this bird is also known as the 'Jesus bird', as it appears to walk on water. I was thrilled to see several of them strutting around on the golf course as they foraged for insects in the grass.

Pipevine swallowtails seem to be one of the more common of the swallowtail species on our property. I really love when I catch the iridescent blue markings on the wings.
