This species is a winter visitor and generally head to breeding grounds to the east and north of our location by late February and early March. we had a few coming in regularly to our feeders and birdbath during February 2022. This one is in typical winter (non-breeding plumage) with duller yellow shades and the black wings. I'm not sure whether it is a male or female.

I think this is a female black-chinned, possibly a juvenile male. It posed so nicely on the very end of a bare twig. Summer 2020 brought the most hummingbirds I have seen in my yard for the 12 years that we have had this property. Drought and heat made them come looking for water and nectar.

A small finch. From a distance they appear to be a plain little brown bird. A closer look reveals lots of streaks of brown, beige and white with some yellow and black thrown in. They are very friendly little birds - a couple have even landed on my husband and me when were outside working in the yard. They come to visit us in the autumn and leave in early spring. While they are around the air is filled with their high pitched tweets and buzzy songs.

Rufous hummingbird holding his ground against a would be intruder to his space. The other one, I believe a juvenile ruby-throat, was not successful in taking claim of the branch. The rufous hummingbird birds with brilliant orange coloring were eye-catching in my yard this year.

Papilio multicaudata
This is a large and flashy butterfly and I have been pleased so see so many of them this spring. All these images were taken in Montell, Uvalde County, Texas.
This series may be my favorite of the bird pictures I took while in Big Bend National Park during June 2019. This cactus wren landed next to me and posed next to the beautiful cholla cactus flower. Notice that the bird's feet do not seem to be bothered by the prickly cactus thorns.
While visiting in Rockport, Texas during September 2019, I found myself infatuated with several praying mantises on a wild sunflower plant. They seemed to be praying for prey on the flowers. Such interesting insects.
Small, bold patterned butterfly. I only saw a few of these and they seemed to have a preference for the yellow flowers. I believe the yellow flowers are commonly known as huisache daisy (aka butterfly daisy or honey daisy)

I found iguanas of various sizes. I believe the mature males are darker with well defined stripes and ridges along the spine. The females and young ones have smoother backs, paler coloring and are smaller. These were all happily residing on a golf course in Cancun, Mexico during April 2022.
Pipevine swallowtails seem to be one of the more common of the swallowtail species on our property. I really love when I catch the iridescent blue markings on the wings.

A blue bird that is not a bluebird. Blue grosbeak male with dark blue coloring, reddish wing bars and a slightly larger beak than an indigo bunting. In Montell, Uvalde County, Texas.
This black-chinned hummingbird was just getting his colored gorget feathers. His tiny wings and tail feathers were a blur of action as he hovered at this feeder.

The northern jacana or northern jaçana (Jacana spinosa) is a wader which is known as a resident breeder from coastal Mexico to western Panama, and on Cuba, Jamaica and Hispaniola in the Caribbean. It sometimes known to breed in Texas, United States, and has also been recorded on several occasions as a vagrant in Arizona. The jacanas are a group of wetland birds, which are identifiable by their huge feet and claws, which enable them to walk on floating vegetation in the shallow lakes that are their preferred habitat. In Jamaica, this bird is also known as the 'Jesus bird', as it appears to walk on water. I was thrilled to see several of them strutting around on the golf course as they foraged for insects in the grass.

Migratory finches - tiny birds with streaks of brown, beige, yellow and cream coloring; black wing bards. Cheery, buzzy calls fill the air when they are about. These were enjoying water out of an old tea kettle, converted to bird bath in my yard. These little ones visit us in fall and winter and will soon be gone.

According to information I found on the web, this is a great black wasp. Also called a katydid killer by some. Large, blue-black and beautiful I was happy to get a couple of shots, even if they were not as clear as I would have hoped. It was on some wildflowers (possibly Bishop's weed - biflora Americana) alongside the road near Mountain Home, Texas.
Nobody can seem to explain for certain why this beautiful butterfly got stuck with the name fatal metalmark. Actually, the metalmark part is pretty obvious if you study the wings. There are shiny markings that appear as if bits of tinsel are woven through the pattern. But the butterfly is not fatal to my knowledge. Anyway, it is a beautiful and very small species of butterfly with shades of red, brown, tan, silver. It was flitting around the wild coreopsis flowers in our meadow.
