A member of the warbler family showing off the yellow breast. This one is posing on a driftwood tree section that we moved into our yard.

Une petite sortie printanière pour refaire le plein du garde-manger...

Female cardinals don't get as much attention as their bright red male partners, but they are very pretty birds. Beige/grayish with bits of red and the bright orange beak that really stands out.

Generally century plants (a variety of agave) have one tall spike with multiple clusters of flowers. Once the plant blooms, it begins to die. This particular plant was stunted for some reason and the spike was pretty short and only had one bloom cluster. It was a bit disappointing in that respect. However this hooded oriole was pleased with the nectar supply, I think.

This female (not really sure, but probably a black-chinned) hummingbird was enjoying playing in the spray from a nearby water sprinkler. On hot, dry days most of the birds in our area will show up for a water sprinkler.

Eastern bluebirds live around me but are not particularly bold about showing themselves to me. This male was on a mission to visit the birdbath and spent a bit of time while I watched. Luckily, I had the camera on hand. The bluebird of happiness, indeed.

A nice little flycatcher that seemed to always be following me around. May not have been the same one each time but it was fun to think so. It seemed genuinely curious about me and posed nicely.

According to bugguide.net this is a spotted thyris moth. It was very small. If you are familiar with the yarrow plant, you can see by the size of the flowers how small the insect is. Nice little pop of color against the white flowers.

Avec la chaleur d'Octobre s'ouvre la saison des Coccinelles :-)

They are so cute when they are so small

Beautiful species of warbler seen at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center in Port Aransas, Texas during spring migration.

This species of swallowtail butterfly is one I haven't seen often on our place. My photos just don't do justice to the brilliant beauty of these fluttering about among the wildflowers in our meadow. They definitely showed preference for the lavender flowers on the prairie verbena.

This white-eyed vireo was foraging among the needles of a cedar tree. Didn't always get a view of the eyes but did get some shots of identification marks such as the wing bars, yellow eye line, and one good shot of the white eye and observed typical behavior. They are fast and tiny.

Green jays are colorful, raucous and entertaining. We have had a flock for a number of years on our property. They are not always easy to photograph because it seems they always post a sentry in a high tree to alert the others of potential dangers. They make a variety of harsh calls, including one that sounds very similar to a red-shouldered hawk and something that is between a gargle and a rattle. But occasionally they grace me with some wonderful moments to capture with my camera. During June this year the fledglings were particularly demanding and they found my yard with an abundance of feeders an easy solution to gathering food. The young ones will remain with the parents and help in caring for the next brood before they move on to raising their own. This sequence caught an interaction between an adult bird and a junior who was begging for food and appeared to have a temper tantrum before finally getting his or her way.

Resident in my yard in Portland Texas. In fact, it's one of a pair that I saw gathering nesting materials so there may be "princebirds" in the near future.

A smaller butterfly than large orange. This one gave me a rare glimpse of the orange upper wings while perched on salvia.

AKA Mexican hat, these beauties blooms in spring and into summer here. Some of them are all yellow, some of them are two-toned with deep brown-red and yellow combinations and some of them are all the red color.

beautiful orangy-red bird with a beautiful song. I'm always happy to see the summer tanagers and they are curious enough to watch me as I take photos. This male was perched in an old live-oak tree. Montell, Uvalde County, Texas.

One of the many species of butterflies I am lucky to see and photograph on our property. The black swallowtail loves to feed on nectar from flowers. This one is on one of the red salvia commonly known as tropical sage that grows in my yard.

I can't help but think of ET when I see these seed pod heads from the lotus flowers

More from my aunt's butterfly garden. A variety of butterflies an other pollinators were taking advantage of the zinnias and other blooms on a marvelous October day.

This American robin was singing so sweetly. The fact that it framed itself for the photo was proof that this image was meant to happen.

Ryan's work was always amazing to me. Because of him I always wanted to try "Nature Photography". So, thank you my dear friend for giving me the chance to try something new :)

Happy Macro Monday :)

Carolina chickadee. We have plenty of these and they are year-round residents. The old watering can is part of an old fountain that the previous owners left behind. It doesn't work as a fountain, but it holds water in a bucket below and attracts birds as a bath and perch. When I saw this picture the lyrics to an old song went through my head "we do the wave all by ourselves" (Cheap Seats by Alabama)

One of the many varieties of butterfly seen in my yard. I purchased the plants because of the blooms and they did not disappoint.

The male summer tanagers in adult plumage are a bright spot of red (almost orangey red) with just a hint of gray on the wings. They sing beautifully and their songs fill the air as they court the females, breed and raise young through the summers on our property. They are birds that arrive in the spring and then leave in the early fall to winter down in the tropics of Mexico, Central and South America.
