Purple-naped Lory (Lorius domicella).

Both adults in general red; black forehead and lores to occiput, with purple patch bordering from behind; upper breast has yellow band which varies from bird to bird; purple/blue thighs; green wings; yellow underwing-band; red tail, tipped with darker brown/red. Bill orange. Eye ring dark grey. Eye orange/red.

A “restricted-range” species. Apparently has a naturally low population; is uncommon to rare on Seram, with no recent reports from Ambon or Buru. Ongoing deforestation from logging, oil drilling and hydroelectric power plants and intensive trapping are suspected to be causing rapid declines.

The purple-naped spiderhunter or purple-naped sunbird (Kurochkinegramma hypogrammicum) is a species of bird in the family Nectariniidae. It is the only species in the genus Kurochkinegramma. It is found in Southeast Asia from Myanmar to Sumatra and Borneo. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

A study published in 2011 appeared to show that the purple-naped spiderhunter was phylogenetically nested within the genus Arachnothera.[2] A subsequent 2017 study, conducted by some of the same authors and using additional sequence data, found that the purple-naped spiderhunter occupied a basal position to Arachnothera.[3] It was formerly placed in the genus Hypogramma until it was realised that the name was preoccupied within Lepidoptera.[4][5][6]

Beo (wolf) takes an afternoon nap.

Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary

Gwinnett County (Lilburn), Georgia, USA.

11 May 2024.

***************

▶ "Gray wolves (Canis lupus) used to be found throughout the Arctic, through southern Mexico, northern Africa, and southern Asia, but due to habitat destruction and various other factors, they are now found only in a few areas of the contiguous US, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and Eurasia. They are one of the most wide-ranging land animals living in a variety of habitats from the tundra, prairie, and even arid landscapes.

Our two wolves came to us from a facility in Minnesota. Beo is the black male wolf. He was born on April 25th, 2023. Aurora is the lighter-colored female and was born on April 29th, 2023. They arrived at Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary when they were about six weeks old and introduced to their exhibit full-time in August of 2023, when they were about four months old.

Beo and Aurora are technically Alaskan Tundra wolves (Canis lupus tundrarum), a subspecies of gray wolves considered endangered."

Medium-sized woodpecker, distinctive in its limited range. Buffy below and black above, with barred black-and-white flanks. White stripe runs down center of back. Head pattern distinctive: black mask, yellow forehead, red crown, and yellow nape. Female similar but has black, not red, on crown. Most similar to Black-cheeked Woodpecker but no range overlap; also compare Hoffmann’s and Red-crowned Woodpeckers (but note Golden-naped’s solid black wings, not barred, and black mask). Found singly or in pairs, usually in forested areas and edges.

Chestnut-naped Antpitta

Large and striking antpitta found from Colombia to extreme northwestern Peru. Typical antpitta shape: plump and short-tailed with long legs. Brown above and medium slaty gray below with rich rufous crown that bleeds into brown head. Small pale patch behind eye. Sexes alike. Shy and very difficult to see; stays on or near the ground in montane forest, usually associated with bamboo thickets. Found from 2,000–3,000 m. Best seen by walking slowly and quietly along forest trails in the early morning or evening.

I've been birdwatching in my backyard and I spotted this squirrel taking a nap. I've never seen them nap. It was so cute. So much peace taking in the sights and sounds of nature.

Taking a quick nap up on a branch. Amazing they don't fall.

Pascha is napping on my lap when I´m reading.

Pascha schläft auf meinem Schoss, während ich lese.

Our kitty Frodo loves the sunroom! There are large windows on three sides which overlook the backyard where he can observe all the bird and squirrel activity.

However, in the summertime, as seen here, is favorite pastime is napping on one of the huge cardboard boxes placed next to an open window. Most of the curtains are drawn to help keep down the summer heat, but we keep the curtains pulled back at this window.
