Black-naped Oriole

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Black-naped Oriole (Oriolus chinensis) is a bird of the oriole family and is found in many parts of Asia. There are several distinctive populations within wide distribution range of the species and in the past the Slender-billed Oriole (Oriolus tenuirostris) was included as a subspecies. Unlike the Golden Oriole which only has a short and narrow eye-stripe, the Black-naped Oriole has the stripe broadening and joining at the back of the neck. Males and females are very similar although the wing lining of the female is more greenish. The bill is pink and is stouter than in the Golden Oriole.

Black-naped Tern

The black-naped tern (Sterna sumatrana) is an oceanic tern mostly found in tropical and subtropical areas of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It is rarely found inland.

The tern is about 30 cm long with a wing length of 21–23 cm. Their beaks and legs are black, but the tips of their bills are yellow. They have long forked tails. The black-naped tern has a white face and breast with a grayish-white back and wings. The first couple of their primary feathers are gray.

There are two listed subspecies:

S. s. mathewsi (Stresemann, 1914) – islands of the western Indian Ocean

S. s. sumatrana (Raffles, 1822) – islands of the eastern Indian Ocean through to the western Pacific & Australasia

Alyssa was pulling weeds. She decided to take a nap. It scared the crap out of my wife because she was laying underneath the work van.

There seems to be some confusion over whether the halt here is called Nappers Crossing or Nappers Halt.

This timetable, showing the only two trains to stop there in 2007, calls it Nappers Crossing, but the sign on the 'platform' names it Nappers Halt.

I suspect the level crossing is Nappers Crossing, and the halt is Nappers Halt.

I suspect the level crossing is Nappers Crossing, and the halt is Nappers Halt.

I also suspect some connection between George Napper, railway porter living at Newton Abbot in 1881, with this crossing. Was he the crossing keeper?

Purple-naped Spiderhunter (Kurochkinegramma hypogrammicum)

Taiping, Malaysia.

I have no idea if it is called sunbird or spiderhunter. Edit: it is a Purple-naped Spiderhunter.

"The purple-naped spiderhunter (Kurochkinegramma hypogrammicum) is a species of bird in the family Nectariniidae. It is the only species in the genus Kurochkinegramma. It is found in Southeast Asia from Myanmar to Sumatra and Borneo. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

A study published in 2011 appeared to show that the purple-naped spiderhunter was phylogenetically nested within the genus Arachnothera. A subsequent 2017 study, conducted by some of the same authors and using additional sequence data, found that the purple-naped sunbird occupied a basal position to Arachnothera. It was formerly placed in the genus Hypogramma until it was realised that the name was preoccupied within Lepidoptera." (wiki)
