I'm confident a large proportion of the entire motive power fleet present on British Columbia's Vancouver Island can be seen in this photograph.
Still carrying Montana Rail Link livery, but now lettered for the Southern Railway of British Columbia, these two GP9's rest in the yard at Nanaimo that serves the train ferry connecting Vancouver Island with the mainland at Delta.

I took this photo to show the itsy-bitsy starfish that huddle with the anemones on the pilings at low tide.
Now, I know from experience - walking the shores of Canada's Gulf Islands at low tide - that starfish are old hands when it comes to being stranded above the waterline. Happens all the time. No big deal, unless a seagull or child catches you at that most vulnerable juncture.
The starfish who couldn't run fast enough to keep up with the receding tide usually clump together on the shady side of a mossy rock, presumably dispersing as rapidly as possible when the tide returns, having had quite enough of each other's company, thank you.
Here, the little starfish have clumped together among the sea anemones on the piling they all call home. Some of the starfish were small enough to have been displayed on a doll beach house's mantlepiece, next to the beads representing miniature glass fishing floats. Really. But I left these starfish right where they were.
Central School later became John Shaw, then Quesnel. My Mother attended John Shaw and I attended Quesnel.

Nanaimo has two newish totem poles. This one, outside the new Sire Station #1 at 666 Fitzwilliam St, was unveiled 21 June, 2023.
1 of 2.
The pole was carved from red cedar by Snuneymuxw First Nation artist Noel Brown.
Brown said elders chose which animals went on the pole, which was meant to be representative of firefighters’ efforts.
Brown's artist statement:
“It starts at the bottom, with an eagle, that carries our prayers up to the Creator,”
“Above that is a bear, that gives us strength and courage, like the [firefighters] have … above that is the box of treasures, that we hold the most cherished things in our life and that’s what they do, they hold us in the treasure box and take care of us and above that is a wolf. They’re a clan and family and they all stay together and take care of us.”

Quite elaborate rock carvings at Petroglyph park in Nanaimo.
Was some kind of ritual place where the native people carved these real (flounder or halibut fish) and mythical (sea wolves) creatures into a rock shelf.
This is a sketch showing what they look like now with moss growing in the crevices. I like the visible skeletons in the sea wolves.

Here at Nanaimo's Moby Dick Motel begins the land portion of my commute. The canoe for the previous marine portion from Protection Island remains secured just out of the picture. The organic ballast served a greater purpose in the canoe than on the bike but I rarely left her behind. She may look uncomfortable but was probably just in the process of lying down. With such a full coat she looked heavier than she was but was no lightweight, contributing to my fitness if not hers. In her younger years she did have to walk up some steeper hills but was still traveling like this at the age of 18 and waited for help off the bike as well as onto it at that time.
The picture was taken by the unbelievably gracious and kind-hearted manageress of the motel, Muriel.
