Just east of Nanaimo, B.C. by ferry. Surprised by the haze last Thanksgiving, but imagine it's worse this summer with the 100s of wildfires burning throughout British Columbia. In any case, the colour of the roofs & tanks pop against the blues of ocean and forests.

The summer wind came blowin' in across the sea

It lingered there to touch your hair and walk with me

All summer long we sang our song and strolled a golden sand

Two sweethearts and the summer wind . . .

This is a shot of Nanaimo's beautiful harbour against the backdrop of the distant Coast Mountains on the mainland of British Columbia (about 60 km away).

On the left is Newcastle Island which I will be visiting tomorrow.

Nanaimo Harbour

Vancouver Island, B.C.

I love boats and was very taken with this one as I rode past it on the small passenger ferry to Newcastle Island. It was pretty easy to find information on it (yay for Google). It's a member of the West Coast Workboat Association, an organization of boat owners of wooden boats historically or presently used for work.

This classic wooden boat probably qualifies in both ways. The owner operates a ship to shore arborist service for the west coast of Vancouver Island and for islands along the Inside Passage of B.C.

2 days in Nanaimo and we ate, in restaurants. No kidding you say?

One evening we dined at La Stella Trattoria. pizza and pasta are their speciality.

The restaurant has a selection of salads including this tomato one - local fresh tomatoes, fior di latte, basil and finished with Vancouver Island sea salt and aged balsamic.

The pizza and pasta were good but this tomato salad got the gold star.

We made a short visit to Nanaimo BC. Took BC Ferries from Vancouver (free for seniors mid week).

Nanaimo has two newish totem poles. This 49 foot tall pole in Maffeo Sutton Park was raised 27 June, 2021.

2 of 2.

The pole is by Snuneymuxw Nation Master Carver Noel Brown. The pole was made out of a 1500 year-old red cedar.

Noel Brown artist statement:

“On the bottom [of the pole] is the matriarch that holds up everyone, so she’s at the bottom holding up the rest of the animals,” stated Brown.

“Above her is the orca— killer whale— who takes care of us when we’re at sea, and above the orca is the bear, who takes care of us when we’re on land.

Up top is the eagle, that carries our prayers up to the creator and watches over us from above.”

Brown stated that the importance of the pole was in that it welcomed people to the site, and that it sent an important message for Snuneymuxw people.

“[It] welcomes everyone to the waterfront there, and it makes you feel real good because that’s one of our main village sites before the settlers came. It just shows that we’re still here, we never went away.”

While exploring Triple Falls last week, it was interesting to find as many different perspectives that would work to be nice compositions.

Nanaimo, B.C.

It was my first day on Vancouver Island and I was kind of enthralled with anything to do with the ocean -- marinas, docks, boats, and sea planes. This particular marina had rows and rows of boat houses. I thought this pair looked particularly nice in the evening sun.

*** I will get home tomorrow and will start getting caught up on photos and comments. :-)
