A passenger boat was seen touring around the Nanaimo Harbour, Nanaimo BC.

An evening waiting and hoping that the Aurora would put on a show... No luck, but a good evening out.

Newcastle Island,

Nanaimo, B.C.

Newcastle Island is a Provincial Park and is accessible only by private boat or on a small water taxi sort of ferry (maximum of 8 passengers). The island has had a colourful and varied past beginning with its use centuries ago by First Nations who had two seasonal villages on it. They call the island Saysutshun.

European settlers first became interested in the island after coal was discovered on it in 1849. That was when it was named Newcastle after Newcastle upon Tyne, England where there was a large coal mining industry at the time. I hope to present pictures of some of the varied aspects of island history later but for now, since I have only really basic processing capabilities on my laptop, I have to settle for simple things.

Millstone River is a 14km river that starts in Brannen Lake and runs through the 36 hectare Bowen Park before it reaches the Nanaimo Inner Harbour.

This beautiful park is one of many parks within the city limits of Nanaimo, there are many waterfalls as the river winds it way down to the ocean.

The many trails are fairly well kept, with little paths leading to the river for access with many sandstone plateaus depending on the level of the water.

Was a little slippery, but we managed to get out onto these plateaus for better angles for our photos.

One of the too rare winter days this year that were favorable for cycling in Nanaimo.

This vessel connects residents of Protection Island in Nanaimo Harbour with downtown Nanaimo. The boat was once a life boat on the BC Ferry 'Queen of the North'.

Yesterday was an awesome day to take a photo of the British Columbia Parliament Buildings located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

It was pretty quiet at the Parliament Buildings first thing in the morning.

In the foreground is the 1886 built E&N Railway, trainless for about a decade, now. Running over the top is the Nanaimo Parkway (Hwy 19) which opened in 1997 (111 years after the E&N). It is anything but vehicle-less. This is located at mile 69.5 of the E&N's Victoria Subdivision, on the south side of Nanaimo, Vancouver Island.

Southern Railway of Vancouver Island (formerly Canadian Pacific's Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway)

Wife of Antonio and mother of Leandro, our great-nephew

Once again the crossing between Vancouver on the mainland and Nanaimo on Vancouver Island has a "downtown to downtown" foot passenger only ferry.

The latest service, opened in late summer 2023, to try their luck is called HULLO, using 2 catamarans.

HULLO is owned by Nanaimo Vancouver Island Ferry Company (VIFC).

Wanting to give the service a try we paid $20++ CDN each (lowest senior entry price) instead of our free mid week ride on BC Ferries.

$20 get you an airline type economy seat Narrow, limited leg room), limited luggage storage, unless you pay, (none under the seat) and no service. Fortunately the seats do not recline.

The onboard sign said free wi-fi but it did't work.

The ferry dock is at the Port of Nanaimo, about 2 Km south of the city centre. A free shuttle is available to get to the dock. There is lots of parking for those driving.

The ferry in Vancouver uses the Convention Centre Harbour Flight Centre dock.

The ferry ride is approximately 90 minutes.

Assessment:

90 minutes end to end beats a BC ferry ride that takes us approximately 3.5 hours end to end.

The ferry was approximately 75% full on our 11 AM Thursday departure.

A defensive monolithic timber (that's tiMber with an M, unlike my spelling error on the sketch) structure called a Bastion in Nanaimo, BC.

Erected by the Hudsons Bay Company.

Maybe should have left this a simple pencil sketch, this paper does not really take watercolour very well.

Leandro is our great-nephew.

I'm getting to see quite a few Steller's Jays lately. I saw this one at Buttertubs Marsh in Nanaimo BC Canada.

This is a passenger only fast ferry operated by Hullo between Nanaimo & downtown Vancouver.

I missed the ferry today by six cars, so while waiting for the next one I watched this Sanvannah Sparrow showing off at the Duke Point Ferry Terminal in Nanaimo BC Canada.
