This is a passenger only fast ferry operated by Hullo between Nanaimo & downtown Vancouver.

I missed the ferry today by six cars, so while waiting for the next one I watched this Sanvannah Sparrow showing off at the Duke Point Ferry Terminal in Nanaimo BC Canada.

Once again the crossing between Vancouver on the mainland and Nanaimo on Vancouver Island has a "downtown to downtown" foot passenger only ferry.

The latest service, opened in late summer 2023, to try their luck is called "hullo", using 2 catamarans.

This is catamaran Spuhéls.

Nanaimo headquartered VIFC (Vancouver Island Ferry Company) founded in 2022 is the service provider.

The new HULLO service is privately funded by Toronto-based Conquora Capital Partners, in partnership with the Port Authority of Nanaimo and the Snuneymuxw First Nation.

The two Damen-built catamaran's SPUHÉLS and STHUQI, can each carry 354 passengers in three classes – Comfort, Premium and Business.

The two new ferries were built by the Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Haiphong, Vietnam, to Dutch shipbuilding specialist's Damen DFF 4212 design.

The VIFC ferries are the first Damen DFF 4212 design to operate outside of Asia.

The vessels have hul’q’umi’num’ names gifted to VIFC in honour of their partner, Snuneymuxw First Nation.

The names are representative of entities of the natural world: spuhéls (spah – els) meaning wind, and sthuqi’ (sta-key) meaning Sockeye salmon.

Leandro"s Fourth Birthday Party,

Nanaimo, B.C.

Not the greatest conditions for a photo, but it's another lifer for me. After getting top deck, on the Depature Bay ferry to the mainland, I heard an announcement that there would be a delay due a vehicle loading problem. Two float planes landed, segulls flew around and lots of boats cruising around. Then I spotted this flock of Black Turnstones on one of the "bird crap covered" pillars in Nanaimo, BC, Canada.

This spot actually still sees a few trains each week, propane car transfers through Nanaimo.

I will return to try and get a train at this place before they disappear entirely.

It lives up to its name, rocky as it is, but isn't too bad to walk upon. The high tide often comes up to a bit beyond where the log is. A few days after this was taken I arrived back in my kayak well after dark. I had done so many times before without problems but something was different this time. I went by without recognizing the site in the dark. Very soon I had the feeling of having gone too far though so turned around and came back hugging the shore. It wasn't till the kayak gently touched bottom that I could make out the small log upright in the larger one and know that this was the right place. (Thanks kids, whoever you are). It was a very dark night so with the bioluminescence it made for a good light show and interesting paddling if not so good for finding your landing site.

Playing for coin near the Vancouver Island Conference Center in downtown Nanaimo.

Situated between Nanaimo’s quaint downtown boutiques and a gorgeous harbour front, the Vancouver Island Conference Centre is both a high-tech marvel and an artfully designed beauty. The full-service convention venue includes 38,000 square feet of meeting, exhibition, ballroom and auditorium space that accommodates events for up to 1,300 people. It opened in 2008.

Today the yard connects with about 5 miles of active rail line and another 150 miles of inactive "dormant" track. This yard looks fairly 'busy', nevertheless.

Maybe we can pillage the ocean forever without affecting its ecology. After all, we have experts managing it. (Experts also managed the Atlantic cod fishery, by the way).

A few sea lions could occasionally be seen. I'll go out on a limb and suggest that they were not welcome. No doubt it was the herring activity that also brought the orcas by last week.

Two or three decades ago this scene would have included a few float planes with their Japanese passengers carrying suitcases full of money to buy up herring roe.

I'm confident a large proportion of the entire motive power fleet present on British Columbia's Vancouver Island can be seen in this photograph.

Still carrying Montana Rail Link livery, but now lettered for the Southern Railway of British Columbia, these two GP9's rest in the yard at Nanaimo that serves the train ferry connecting Vancouver Island with the mainland at Delta.
