The following is from the museums website.

The Museum’s aircraft was manufactured by the Stearman Aircraft Division of Boeing Airplane Company, Wichita, Kansas in 1943. This aircraft is painted in standard Navy yellow and blue colors. It was purchased in flyable condition by the Museum from William Rennie in 1979.

One of America’s best known biplanes, the Stearman Kaydet was built in greater quantities than any other known American or European biplane. The prototype Stearman was tested by both the Army and the Navy as early as 1934, and by the time the last production model was completed in February 1945, more than 10,000 had been built. Officially named the Boeing Model 75, the plane was (and still is) persistently known as the “Stearman” by many who flew them, in recognition of its original manufacturer. It was called the “PT” by the Army, “N2S” by the Navy and “Kaydet” by Canadian forces.

Virtually every American pilot during World War II, both Navy and Army Air Force, went through flight training in a Stearman. Built as a private venture by the Stearman Aircraft Company of Wichita (bought by Boeing in 1934), this two-seat biplane was of mixed construction. The wings were of wood with fabric covering while the fuselage had a tough, welded steel framework, also fabric covered. Either a Lycoming R-680 (PT-13) or Continental R-670 (PT-17) engine powered most models, at a top speed of 124 mph with a 505-mile range. An engine shortage in 1940-41 led to the installation of 225-hp Jacobs R-755 engines on some 150 airframes, and the new designation PT-18.

The plane was easy to fly, and relatively forgiving of new pilots. It gained a reputation as a rugged airplane and a good teacher. Students sat in the front seat and the instructor in the back, each communicating via a gosport tube – a simple sound cone and tube system. The Stearman’s tricky ground handling characteristics gained it the nickname “Yellow Peril.”

The Kaydet’s second career began right after World War II when thousands were sold on the surplus market for a few hundred dollars apiece. The continuing popularity of this trainer is made evident by the fact that 3,190 Kaydets were still on the civil aeronautics register in 1969.

In late 2013, I decided to try and see how many different aircraft types and variants I could photograph in a calendar year. This is the result of that. I photographed 590 different type/model/series of aircraft in 2014, with 580 of those presented in this image (I lost several in a hard drive crash this summer).

While this started out as a fun project, it felt more and more like work as the year went on, with me making stupid trips all the way across town just to photograph a single aircraft in marginal light simply because I hadn't shot that type yet in 2014.

I'm glad to have this ridiculous project behind me and am looking forward to shooting only what I want to shoot in the conditions I want to shoot in, with the focus being on quality, not quantity.

This is the Parade of Flight in a nutshell. To keep my stream economical I decided to fit all the planes in one shot. Actually this is what I was expecting to see when they said there was going to be a Parade of Aircraft flying over Coronado.

c/n 75-1349JS

Built in 1996 from genuine Kaydet components and given the c/n 75-1349JS. This airframe is not to be confused with the genuine c/n 75-1349 which was an N2S-2 with the US Navy Bureau number 3572 and is still flying in the United States as N4214W.

N2JS, however, is marked as an N2S-5 and is painted in the markings of US Navy fighter squadron VF-3, famous for carrying the ‘Felix the Cat’ insignia in the pre-war era (the unit being redesignated as VF-31 during 1948.

She is owned and operated by Tim Manna and is seen taking off to display at the Shuttleworth Collection’s 2022 Season Premiere Air Show.

Locomotive History

In 1919 the Great Northern Railway required further suburban tank engines and decided that an improved 0-6-2T design based on the N1 class would meet this requirement.. The new design although based on the N1, featured larger diameter cylinders, piston valves (positioned above the cylinders, requiring a high-pitched boiler), a superheated boiler, and a greater water capacity.. The high pitched boiler combined with a short chimney to keep the locomotive with the Metropolitan loading gauge, gave the N2s a powerful appearance. Sixty locomotives were built by the Great Northern Railway between 1920 and 1921. The design was adapted as a Group Standard by the London and North Eastern railway and a further forty-seven were built between 1925 and 1929. 4744 is one of the Great Northern Railway engines (original number 1744) and was built in 1921 by the North British Locomotive Company of Glasgow. 1744 was allocated to King's Cross on delivery from Glasgow and remained there until May 1962. It was re- numbered 4744 in 1924, 9523 in 1946 and 69523 in 1949. It was withdrawn from New England (Peterborough) in September 1962 having been stored there since May and moved to Doncaster works. It was acquired by the Gresley Society in October 1963 and moved from Doncaster Works to Harworth Colliery for storage. After steaming at the colliery it moved to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. By the early 1970’s the engine needed boiler repairs and The Main Line Steam Trust offered to undertake this work as the engine was considered ideal for the Great Central Railway and it moved to Quorn on 21st November 1975. Following this repair it entered traffic as 4744 in LNER black one month after this photograph on the 16th April 1978. For the next ten years the engine saw regular use, and was repainted as 69523 on the 14th November 1987. Following a ten yearly boiler overhaul, and a major rebuilt of the motion, the engine re-entered traffic on the 16th April 1994. The engine has just completed another ten year overhaul and has emerged in Great Northern Railway green as 1744. The engine moved to the North Norfolk Railway in 2017 and was withdrawn from service in November 2018 due to a leaking foundation ring. The current plan is to complete its next overhaul and have it back in operation in 2021 when it is intended that it will operate on the main line.
