The Boeing Stearman is sort of "the" classic airplane. Designed by Lloyd Stearman of Stearman Aircraft Corporation before Stearman became a subsidiary of Boeing. It was the primary trainer of both the USAAF and the USN during WWII.
This specimen is in the "Yellow Peril" livery of a US Navy trainer, it is an N2S-5 equipped with a nine-cylinder, 220hp, R-680-17 Lycoming radial engine. The Navy's N2S-5 is the same model as the Army PT-13D.
At the time the shot was taken it carried the registration D-EKAX, later it became N60MV (older registrations were: Bu.43266 and N65951).
Taken with my Nikon F3HP with an AF ED Nikkor 180/2.8 attached (that lens is great for manual focussing, I always had the 400 on the F4 and the 180 on the F3 when I went to the airport). Ektachrome Elite 100, digitized from a print.
Finally, for those interested, some data of the N2S-5 (USAAF designation: PT-13D):

The Stearman (Boeing) Model 75 is an American biplane formerly used as a military trainer aircraft, of which at least 10,626 were built in the United States during the 1930s and 1940s. Stearman Aircraft became a subsidiary of Boeing in 1934. Widely known as the Stearman, Boeing Stearman, or Kaydet, it served as a primary trainer for the United States Army Air Forces, the United States Navy (as the NS and N2S), and with the Royal Canadian Air Force as the Kaydet throughout World War II. After the conflict was over, thousands of surplus aircraft were sold on the civilian market. In the immediate postwar years, they became popular as crop dusters and sports planes, and for aerobatic and wing walking use in air shows. wikipedia

A variation on this picture is here
OK - there's a story - buckle up.
I've been to this airshow and had no particular desire to go again. There aren't a lot of planes and it's very crowded. BUT, they were gonna have a Ford Trimotor and I wanted to see one, and photograph it, of course. The other Jim and I went down to the airport on Thursday to photograph it (they were giving rides before the weekend show) so we figured we'd be able to take pictures of it on the apron and in the air. I even plunked down some cash and rented a 100 to 400 mm lens.
Upon arrival, we were advised that they were having mechanical issues and wouldn't show up until later in the day. Well, poop!
So I figured I'd go to the show on Sunday. There would be more crowds, but I'd at least get to see it flying. So I extended my rental until Sunday afternoon.
Sunday arrives and I show up. NO TRIMOTOR!!! Evidently they weren't just minor mechanical issues. So I was left photographing only a few remaining planes. But dammit I was going to get some use out of this rental lens!!!
So 542 shots later, in less than an hour, this is the best of the bunch. I have a few other pictures that I'll post, but I think this is the goodest.
Which brings me to why I don't like to shoot airshows, birds, sporting events, etc. Pretty much anything you'd be using a long telephoto for. It seems like there is a lot of "spraying and praying" going on. You burn a LOT of shots to get a handful that are usable. Not even good...just usable. And while I do a little spraying in the normal world, I usually don't wind up with a 100 to 1 ratio! That is a LOT of culling. My ideal photograph is to sit down, contemplate the situation, and compose the picture. That isn't something you can do with the aforementioned subjects.
Not that there's anything wrong with that! It's just not something I'm into. Plus, EVERYONE is shooting airplanes and birds. Give me a nice immovable murder shack any day.
So you'll be seeing a few more pictures from this event over the next few weeks. They probably won't be as good as this one, if I do say so myself.
