A troubling situation, sometimes the flash doesn't fire in high speed sync.

Olympus OM-D E-M1 MkII and Godox TT350O.

Some times you can take 2 or three shots held held no problem then on the fourth the flash doesn't fire. (No problems on a tripod).

Much experimentation and it seems to be oddly linked to the autofocus, unless the camera has fully locked on then the flash wont fire, but the camera does. Give it half a second longer and the autofocus has settled then all works fine. Works fine every time in manual focus. (The same situation on my E-M5).

Ah Ha found it - I have set the shutter release (both cameras) to "Not wait" for the auto focus but to fire when I press the release. I use this when working "from the hip" in the street for candid shots. I found that all the movement and not knowing exactly where the focus point was meant I was missing shots that would probably have been acceptable. I tend to set things at f5.6 and a 1/400 of a second.

The delights of being able to alter so many settings can lead to a little confusion at times.

On the morning of this photograph, I experience light like I have never seen before. It was about 20 minutes before sunrise and the entire landscape was bathed in a warm, red light reflecting off of the clouds above. It seemed to wash over the scene in a matter of a minute or 2. Myself and another photographer looked at each other from 100 yards away, both of us gobsmacked. This photograph has not been enhanced in any way, with white balance kept at daylight. This is why I love photography!!

What a night that was. I had another 5 incredibly talented photographers on tonight's Light Painting Workshop, and it was an absolute pleasure teaching them. The fog rolled in mid-way through the Workshop but it made for some pretty dramatic conditions in the end!

So first, ill probably be doing one of these things a month to just give you guys a monthly update on a things, pictures like this if its more "personal" and something else if it'ts just "business".

So my personal life over the past month has honestly been pretty terrible. Band camp started, school started, and honestly it's been hell. Though one thing that probably has ripped me apart is one person, a girl. I mentioned previously about in my first update that there was this girl that i really liked and really wanted to go out with her. My plan was to ask her out at the homecoming dance and I thought it would be an easy plan. Well that entire plan was completely (I mean every part of it) blown away because one of my best friends wanted the same exact thing, and so he asked her out, she said yes, and now they're dating. And the main problem is that its not one of those "the Girl (that the main guy likes)has a boyfriend who is an asshole" from the overused cliche, i've known him for years and hes just an awesome person, i would say that hes just a better person than me. So now when i ever talk to her and she mentions his name, it just makes me hate myself and really depressed. So yeah...that sucks...a lot.

But with that out of the way, how bout some updates on Lego stuff.

1: So its been an absolute pain to register for a brickly artist, and they still havent responded to the rest of my e-mails regarding how they're going to send me a temporally password so yeah. And ill have a big post when (hopefully) that gets resolved.

2. Havent touched GCPD at all...sorry, though i really do want to finish it.

3. For those who follow my instagram, you saw that i finally bought my first ninjago sets after over 6 years! I remember when it first started and never realizing that it would take off this far, so yeah.

4.I still have not started my build for the wayne manor section on top of my batcave, though i am planning on starting in the next 2 months ish.

5. Have a new idea called "Retro Movie Figs" where every week i post a figure or two from a classic film franchise or movie, ill start off with well known ones and work my way towards very obscure ones.

That's it, hope you guys have an awesome day, and if you have any suggestions of any figs i should do, please let me know.

Thanks guys for the unending support.

I am delighted to announce the release of my very first E-book:

A step-by-step guide to Light Painting

After five years of spinning lights around, I have finally managed to find the time to fulfil what has been a personal goal of mine for some time, writing a book about a subject that I love: Light Painting.

www.davidgilliver.com/photography/

You do not need to be an experienced photographer to get the hang of and enjoy Light Painting. The main aim of my E-book is to try to save anyone who is new to Light Painting a heap of time by highlighting some of the key considerations that should be made such as:

- Getting your head around Light Painting

We take a closer look at the general concept of Light Painting: How does it work? What effects can you create?

- Camera Settings

I discuss the DSLR camera settings that work best

- Light Painting Tools

We take a look at a variety of portable light sources and look at examples of Light Paintings that can be created using each of them

- Light Painting Creations (including ‘How to create the perfect Orb’)

We take a closer look at several of the more popular forms of Light Painting: Orbs, Ribbons, Physiograms, Domes and Star Trails. I describe in complete detail with photographic illustrations and descriptions how you set about making each one. Every year I receive lots of emails from people asking me how I create my Orbs – this topic is covered in great detail

- The Full Monty

Putting everything into practice. Join me on a night photography Light Painting shoot where we look at the entire creative process from start to finish

I have not held anything back, as I wanted to share everything with you that I have learned over the past five years. This book is truly a labour of love and I hope you find it incredibly helpful.

This E-book is 55 pages long, costs only £12 and is absolutely crammed with useful information and helpful tips.

As always, thanks for showing an interest in me and my work and the very best of luck with your Light Painting journey.

David

It has been an up and down day already. My scheduled photo shoot with a friend had to be re-scheduled but then I found that my e-reader that I left at the gym yesterday, was turned into the office. Taken at 9:16 am.

I took this photo from our recreation Centre, and found this halo, not sure why this happened. Happy Fence Friday! Thanks for visiting and stay blessed:)

From my e-bike trip from Denmark to Norway, this photo was taken at Røldal, which is a place with a lot of skiing in the winter season. All the cars drive through the mountain by a tunnel, but I had to drive over the mountain by a small road on my bike, since cyclists were not allowed in the tunnel.

My E&LS adventures came on the last day of my Fall 2020 trip to the Upper Peninsula, which meant I needed to make the drive back to Dubuque yet that evening. I stayed longer than I probably should have to shoot the E&LS Wells switcher tying up at the shops (previous photo). Then I was delayed a little bit longer because my trip south from Escanaba coincided with the departure of CN train A450 from Gladstone, the daily eastbound for Green Bay. I stopped a couple times to shoot them but started to find long shadows everywhere I went as the sun quickly dropped. As the A450 was near Powers they got a new warrant through Marinette from the RTC, because the "train there has cleared up." I figured that was likely E&LS M&M Job going back "home" but also figured they'd be long tied up before I got there. However, as I pulled into the north side of Menominee just a few minutes before sunset, the E&LS radio channel chirped to life with a conductor counting off car counts as a train was backing up - so they weren't tied up yet!

I headed straight for where I knew the E&LS engine house in Menominee, MI is along 4th Avenue... sure enough, there was the M&M Job with the ELS 1201 and 1202 backing slowly down the lead to the engine house, apparently moments from being done for the day. The setting sun was almost gone but I found one last sliver of drop-under light at this spot to illuminate the nose of the 1201 at least, as well as the surrounding fall foliage. The door to the engine house can be seen on the left behind the tree. Not the greatest shot of the M&M Job ever perhaps, but still a neat way to close out my adventures in the Upper Peninsula and Northeast Wisconsin. And as I have said, I definitely didn't expect to shoot 4 trains on the E&LS in one day!

The 1201 is a former Reserve Mining unit with its distinctive light package that has been on the E&LS for a long time, and assigned to the M&M job for quite a bit of that time. The 1202 is a former ISLX engine that has been with the E&LS for a few years too. Before coming to the E&LS its last assignment was on the Mineral Range railroad in Ishpeming, MI. I caught it there in 2014 when it had been lettered the M.R. 907 (link to a photo in the comments). Sounds like these two units are the currently regulars on the M&M Job, which means I'd really like to get back here and spend the day with these guys sometime...

From my e-session last night.

HBW also...

I'll be in and out to catch up, I'm editing these now...

As much as I had hoped my E-book (A step-by-step guide to Light Painting) would sell a few copies, there was no guarantee that I would sell any at all.

I get such an amazing feeling every time a copy of my E-book sells, and I am delighted to report that this has happened way more times than I could have expected.

What pleases me even more is the feedback I have been receiving from those who have bought their own copy. So many people have been in touch to let me know how useful they have found it - now that REALLY puts a smile on my face :O)

A very special thank you to everyone who has bought a copy - I am so glad it has either helped you begin your journey into Light Painting, or simply helped you improve your Orb-spinning skills. I am eternally grateful.

All the best,

David
