Yesterday I added Tetris to this photo album/ nostalgia trip, which happened to be one of the main reasons people picked up a Nintendo Game Boy.

Today see's the entry of a game that sold a lot of Nintendo 64's. Goldeneye!

There are hundred and hundreds of things I could say about this game, nearly enough to make me top the huge write up I did for Pokémon when I added that to the album. However I'll try and trim the fat off and keep it sweet.

=========

Whilst video games based on movies are 95% of the time a waste of your money (and time)... Goldeneye was one of the few fine exceptions to that rule. Sure it came out a while after the film (one of my favourite James Bond films btw), but as time has gone on it seems there is a trend of the best games based on movies to be the ones that come out much later on (except things like "Reservoir Dogs" on PS2 ¬_¬).

'RARE' pretty much kicked off the whole 'console FPS'/ 'couch based FPS-multiplayer with friends' scene with this game.

Thanks to great level design, great gameplay, and the cart was crammed with a LOT to do thanks to a fairly lengthy single player campaign, topped off with a great difficulty curve, and as if that wasn't already enough...you had all the unlockable cheats to chase down, further extending the replay value.

Now. As for the multi-player...nothing will EVER beat Goldeneye in terms of the game I've played the widest array of people on for a local multi-player game. I must have literally played at least 60 different people by now at this game, and I'll never turn down a game today, so that number is always ready to grow further :).

In contrast to today, it's easy to take for granted the fact we can play random people any time we want at the popular FPS games of modern times thanks to the advent of online gaming... but there's nothing quite like those good times were you'd have 3-4 people gathered around 1 TV, with the old split-screen (that allowed us to peep and get the advantage on each other).

...Great multi-player maps, "no odd job or jaws rules amongst the hardcore players", the inability for the game to cope with us pyromaniac types throwing out a hell of a load of Proxies, plus the simple nature of this game in comparison to Perfect Dark arguably made the game more skill based, whilst PD allowed for some set ups that made you think a little more.

The guy in the toilets on Facility [see photo], running people over in tanks, getting lost in the snow levels and the "Statue" level, shooting guards hats off, trying to protect Natalya on "Control" from infinite guards, using cheats to have some hilarious times against the enemies, the frustration of hearing that alarm sound when a guard had busted you or a camera had seen you, finding the scientists in Facility that wouldn't take no crap and would pull a gun on you.
