Yesterday I added Tetris to this photo album/ nostalgia trip, which happened to be one of the main reasons people picked up a Nintendo Game Boy.

Today see's the entry of a game that sold a lot of Nintendo 64's. Goldeneye!

There are hundred and hundreds of things I could say about this game, nearly enough to make me top the huge write up I did for Pokémon when I added that to the album. However I'll try and trim the fat off and keep it sweet.

=========

Whilst video games based on movies are 95% of the time a waste of your money (and time)... Goldeneye was one of the few fine exceptions to that rule. Sure it came out a while after the film (one of my favourite James Bond films btw), but as time has gone on it seems there is a trend of the best games based on movies to be the ones that come out much later on (except things like "Reservoir Dogs" on PS2 ¬_¬).

'RARE' pretty much kicked off the whole 'console FPS'/ 'couch based FPS-multiplayer with friends' scene with this game.

Thanks to great level design, great gameplay, and the cart was crammed with a LOT to do thanks to a fairly lengthy single player campaign, topped off with a great difficulty curve, and as if that wasn't already enough...you had all the unlockable cheats to chase down, further extending the replay value.

Now. As for the multi-player...nothing will EVER beat Goldeneye in terms of the game I've played the widest array of people on for a local multi-player game. I must have literally played at least 60 different people by now at this game, and I'll never turn down a game today, so that number is always ready to grow further :).

In contrast to today, it's easy to take for granted the fact we can play random people any time we want at the popular FPS games of modern times thanks to the advent of online gaming... but there's nothing quite like those good times were you'd have 3-4 people gathered around 1 TV, with the old split-screen (that allowed us to peep and get the advantage on each other).

...Great multi-player maps, "no odd job or jaws rules amongst the hardcore players", the inability for the game to cope with us pyromaniac types throwing out a hell of a load of Proxies, plus the simple nature of this game in comparison to Perfect Dark arguably made the game more skill based, whilst PD allowed for some set ups that made you think a little more.

The guy in the toilets on Facility [see photo], running people over in tanks, getting lost in the snow levels and the "Statue" level, shooting guards hats off, trying to protect Natalya on "Control" from infinite guards, using cheats to have some hilarious times against the enemies, the frustration of hearing that alarm sound when a guard had busted you or a camera had seen you, finding the scientists in Facility that wouldn't take no crap and would pull a gun on you.

A multiplayer game that’s one part science and one part science fiction helps get visitors excited about learning more about the universe. As visitors command their own space ship and attempt to discover an extra-solar planet in the game “Beyond Our World”, they learn a lot about the many elements of our complex universe.

With four stations (space ships) and a "big board" (scoreboard), this network-based board game lets visitors play against each other. The object of the game is simple: guide your ship out of the solar system to reach a new planet. Visitors rack up points along the way as they answer questions, make discoveries and avoid a series of hazards. The big board keeps track of the ships’ locations and lets everyone know how each ship is faring.

Ideum worked with Adventure Science Center to paper prototype the game long before we began to develop the software. The paper version of the game drove the development process. Once the paper version was structured properly, we could then focus on the software development and communications aspects of the game.

How does online time differ from ffline? You can grow up online in a few weeks, virtually. But – in virtual reality – teenagers can lead teams, creating real relationships and earn real money, notes Cory.

I would add, The Net has made it possible for the little guy to start a business with almost no capital and no resources. But, as was visible last week at Web 2.0, many of these companies are "body-part” companies, designed to be grafted onto, say, Google or Yahoo!. They sell functions, not solutions, and they often lack seasoned management.. But perhaps the Net is offering a solution to this challenge, too: a cohort of seasoned managers, used to organizing teams, making decisions, setting and meeting goals online. The old computer games taught physical skills; the new massively multiplayer online games teach social and managerial skills. (They also teach some people to be good followers, another useful skill.)

“You have no game son!”

I finaly have Street Fighter IV in my posesion! WOOT WOOT. What a sweet game.

Spend all night playing against my dude Tienne who is half way across the globe in the Troy, Alabama. (yeah I know…(>.<))

Still can’t get over how awesome technology has become. I remember playing Street Fighter II on the SNES at one of my friends house when I was like 10. That was the only possobility for some multiplayer fun. Sittin next to eachother on the couch. Now, you can be 10.000 km away from eachother and still can exchange uppercuts. I love it, it’s so great. God bless the inernet.

When I think back to Timesplitters 2, I can sort of liken it to the story of Cinderella.

Once the Playstation 2 and Gamecube had come in as the next big thing, I had the opportunity to get my hands on several generic PS2 and Gamecube First Person Shooter's.

Although none of them could really fill the metaphorical shoe 'Perfect Dark 64' had left behind, in regards to delivering an amazing console FPS game, with a mult-iplayer that I could enjoy with friends on the couch for countless hours. None until Timesplitters 2 that is.

Then again the team at "Rare" who had in previous years made 'Goldeneye' and 'Perfect Dark 64' had left Rare and moved on to "Free Radical Design" (the makers of this game), so it kind of makes sense they'd be the ones to fill the void.

Timesplitters 2 brought back a familiar friend, in regards to having a similar interface to Goldeneye, weapons (although renamed and reskinned) that could generally be compared to weapons from the past, and perhaps most importantly solid controls and gameplay that were like the good old times, and just fitted right with me (and the rest of my Perfect Dark 64 loving friends).

It's familiarity wasn't all it had going for it though. The game brought a lot of new charm and personality too it. It's interesting plot allowed for a wide assortment of game environments and characters. Plus the game didn't take itself at all seriously, which opened doors to some totally bizarre character choices for multi-player.

Only in Timesplitters would you see the Disco loving "Harry Tipper", a humanised Duck (Duckman Drake), Robofish, angry Gingerbread men, annoying 3 feet tall Monkeys, Calamari, a variety of Zombies (before they were cool in FPS games too), various cyborg/ robotic characters, Mafia members, Women from the Wild West....all franticly running around and depleting ammo.

The sense of humour helped set it apart as it's own franchise and not just "the spiritual successor to Goldeneye/ PD".

I'm choosing Timesplitters 2 as an entry to this "25 years of gaming" list as it was the game that just seemed to do a lot of things right and with few major complaints. Great gameplay aside...it had an awesome range of unlockables and modes, and had some great multiplayer maps.

Free Radical got a bit too ambitious with Timesplitters: Future Perfect (3), and the multiplayer maps just didn't feel as fun. TS3 was still an alright game though, and the co-op was a decent run too. I'm hoping that the 'on and off' Timesplitters 4 is closer to Timesplitters 2 when that comes out, and if so you'll definitely catch me playing that online....A LOT :).

project: multiplayer chess (2-6 players)

phase: alpha version

total development cost so far: 6 printed sheets of paper, in color.

remaining work:

about an hour of cutting stuff out ahead of me.

still wondering what approach to take for durability of game pieces (so far easiest/cheapest alternative seems to be to exchange 2 bucks for pennies at the bank and then glue cut-out pieces onto said pennies.

come up with some meaningful rules :) a prototype set of valid moves is done, but more needs doing.
