Inge King's sculpture 'Link III' is one of two of her works in Sculpture by the sea's 2016 edition. She passed away in April aged 100. This work brought from her garden studio dates to 2007-8, around the time she gained recognition for her long career in public sculpture.

The stainless steel sculpture is beautifully balanced and dominates its site. In her words talking about another sculpture, 'Rings of Saturn': 'Conquering the landscape does not rely on scale but simplicity and clarity of form expressing inner strength and tension...I like it to arouse people’s curiosity to explore the work. Multidimensional objects look different from every angle. The exciting thing about outdoor sculpture is the change with the light, the weather… everything is in constant flux. It becomes almost a living entity.'

She studied in Berlin, London and Glasgow from 1937-43; was a survivor of the holocaust and moved to Melbourne in 1951.

Kurt Wüthrich has the kind of presence that quietly commands the room. When I photographed him at Scripps in 2022, he stood with the self-possession of someone who has spent a lifetime inside the machinery of precision. No theatrics, no performance. Just a steady gaze and the unmistakable air of someone who knows exactly what he’s doing.

Wüthrich is best known for developing nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to study biological macromolecules in solution. Before his work, protein structures in their natural, aqueous state were elusive, often requiring crystallization for X-ray analysis or less precise methods. His multidimensional NMR techniques revealed these complex, shifting molecules as they are, alive in water, orchestrating life’s molecular processes.

Trained as a chemist and physicist, his clarity of thought is evident. His academic path took him from Bern to UC Berkeley and Bell Laboratories, where he honed his NMR expertise, before returning to ETH Zurich for his landmark work. Each step built tools that reshaped structural biology.

In 2002, he shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his NMR breakthroughs, recognition of a body of work that opened a new window into the architecture of life. His techniques have become foundational, revealing the structures of proteins like those involved in Alzheimer’s disease or immune system regulation, guiding drug development and medical research.

When we spoke, he was thoughtful, precise, and economical with his words. He described science not as conquest but as continuity. One step after another. A lifelong pursuit of nature’s logic.

He has held positions at ETH Zurich and the Scripps Research Institute and remains active in international collaborations. Even at 86, his mind is hungry, his eyes sharp with the discipline of decades spent not letting things slide.

What struck me most was his formality, not just in his immaculate shirt, but in his composed demeanor and measured answers. Everything about him suggested rigor. A scientist shaped by order and exacting standards.

Wüthrich’s career spans over fifty years, yet he remains forward-looking. Still curious. Still listening. Science has given him the habit of paying close attention, not just to data or theory, but to the world’s hidden patterns, knowable through patience and precision.

Few scientists have reshaped our view of life’s molecular machinery with such clarity and restraint. Kurt Wüthrich is among them, revealing what was always there, hidden in motion, essential to life.

The Mergence with God

The cognition of God is possible only against the background of intense love for Him.

It is so, because the emotions of sincere love are what bring consciousnesses together.

God can easily see any falsity in our emotions.

He Himself is Perfect Love; therefore, He does not allow those, who have defects in their love, to approach Him.

We are completely naked — in our actions, emotions, and thoughts — before Him, Who is observing every one of us from the depths of the multidimensionality.

God is not “somewhere out there” but directly under the cells of our bodies and under every one of us as souls. He sees, hears, and feels everyone in every moment; on the contrary, people usually do not perceive Him...

To achieve the Mergence with God, one should strive to eradicate one’s own egocentrism completely.

Besides, on the higher stages of the Path, it is necessary to master the state of “non - I”, in which one — during meditative trainings — only perceives transparent emptiness in that place where the feeling of oneself was before; the “I” in this case flows completely into the Divine Consciousness and merges with It.

After learning to stay in the subtlest Components of the Absolute and after the real cognition of Its Infinite Greatness — it becomes quite easy for us to subdue our egos completely. No matter how big is one’s self-awareness, when one realizes the Infinite Vastness of God in comparison with oneself, one sincerely surrenders by eliminating one’s “I” through flowing into Him.

Assembly progress of 20 Open Frame unit cuboctahedra separated / connected by 30 triangular prisms

Twelve of 20 cuboctahedra connected. Eight to go!

Once finished this will be the largest scale origami model we ( Ardonik & I ) have made. The model itself is not that complicated. Open Frame cuboctahedra are simple to construct. Attaching them together requires both of us. because we chose to assemble the cuboctahedra individual before joining them via Triangular prisms, normally we would assemble a model like this one unit at a time. The Open Frames lattice properties allows us to reach between through the cuboctahedron to assemble it, This method could not be done had we used Sonobe modules to build this.

This is a cooperative effort. Together Ardonik & I designed, folded & are assembling this beast. It is so big that it requires both of us to assemble.

Hopefully it will be completed in time for Future Professionals Day 2010.

I just love this. My Hawk Eye macro got published in Science, thanks to Creative Commons licensing.

Prof. Fernald from Stanford wrote a fascinating article on a topic that has intrigued scientists for many years – how did divergent species converge in their evolution of eyes – what Darwin called an “organ of extreme perfection.” The physics of light have constrained solutions to collecting and focusing light to eight basic types of optics, seen in this chart (with imaging based on shadows on the left, refraction in the middle, and reflection on the right). Eyes have evolved independently at least 40 times.

Looking back, eyes matter. Image-forming eyes appeared in 6 of the 33 extant metazoan phyla, and these 6 now account for 96% of the known species.

It reminded me of my earlier flickr ramblings on the complexity of birds’ eyes, – with their wider color spectrum and multidimensional color space. Photographers should give a shout out of respect to dem birdies.

And how about the tadpoles rewiring their visual pathways when they become frogs and move from prey to predator.

While on the topic of being awestruck by biology, check out this video for a modern example… a graphic simulation of a white blood cell… starting in the bloodstream, then through the double layer cell wall, to uncover a “cirque du cell” of lipid transport proteins, DNA synthesis, and ribosomes assembling proteins from RNA code strings.

Space/time paradox and multiple dimensions glitches.

THE CHAPEL BY THE SEA has met continuously for more than 35 years, providing a place for Christian worship for thousands of people who visit South Padre Island annually. Since dress is informal, persons can just "come as they are." The service is multidimensional. Each Sunday finds people from all over the Rio Grande Valley and Texas, as well as many other states in attendance. A corporation was established to give stability to the Chapel. A Board of Directors has been elected to provide direction for its mission. We are not affiliated with any religious denomination or group. In 1967 a small, informal, interdenominational worship service began to be held on Sunday mornings at the open air "Pavilion" in Isla Blanca County Park. Various ministers would come and lead in worship. This service eventually evolved into the idea to someday have a permanent building to be used just for worship services and to hire one minister-chaplain to provide for Sunday worship services. A corporation was established in 1976 and our first Board Members were elected at that time. By 1979 suitable land and an architect were secured for work on our current facility to begin. Our first worship service was held in the newly completed building on Easter Sunday morning, April 6, 1980. Since then, Chapel by the Sea has been providing a place for Christian worship each Sunday for thousands of people who visit South Padre Island each year. Our primary mission is to provide a holy place in which God can be worshiped. In addition to Sunday services, the Chapel is available to the public for weddings, funerals, and other religious services. The Chapel has no members and seeks no members. Most of the people who attend are members of a Christ- based church in their own city.

Archangel Ariel is an Archangel of healing, and it is through nature that her restorative, inspiring and rejuvenating healing power effortlessly flows. Sensing the presence of Ariel seems to be easier near bodies of water, which further magnify her healing energy and presence. Clear your mind and open your heart to sense, feel, and understand her presence within the natural world. In addition, connecting to Ariel out in nature will help to refresh you completely, giving you a new excitement and postive perspective to manifest change and blessings in your life.This is no mistake, Ariel is also a powerful Archangel of Manifestation, Prosperity, and Abundance. From Keith Simmons I got this interesting information;-))

Indra's net (also called Indra's jewels or Indra's pearls) is a metaphor used to illustrate the concepts of emptiness, dependent origination, and interpenetration in Buddhist philosophy.

"Imagine a multidimensional spider's web in the early morning covered with dew drops. And every dew drop contains the reflection of all the other dew drops. And, in each reflected dew drop, the reflections of all the other dew drops in that reflection. And so ad infinitum. That is the Buddhist conception of the universe in an image." – Alan Watts

View On Black

The Security Council, by its resolution 1778 of 25 September 2007, approved the establishment in Chad and the Central African Republic of a multidimensional presence intended to help create the security conditions conducive to a voluntary, secure and sustainable return of refugees and displaced persons, inter alia by contributing to the protection of refugees, displaced persons and civilians in danger, by facilitating the provision of humanitarian assistance in eastern Chad and the north-eastern Central African Republic and by creating favourable conditions for the reconstruction and economic and social development of those areas.

The Council decided that the multidimensional presence shall include a United Nations Mission in the Central African Republic and Chad (the acronym MINURCAT is to be used in all languages), with the following mandate in eastern Chad and the north-eastern Central African Republic, in liaison with the United Nations country team:

Security and protection of civilians

(a) To select, train, advise and facilitate support to elements of the Police tchadienne pour la protection humanitaire;

(b) To liaise with the national army, the gendarmerie and police forces, the nomad national guard, the judicial authorities and prison officials in Chad and the Central African Republic to contribute to the creation of a more secure environment;

(c) To liaise with the Chadian Government and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in support of their efforts to relocate refugee camps which are in close proximity to the border, and to provide to UNHCR, on availability and cost-reimbursable basis, logistical assistance for that purpose;

(d) To liaise closely with the Sudanese Government, the African Union, the African Union Mission in the Sudan (AMIS), the AU/UN Hybrid operation in Darfur (UNAMID), the United Nations Peacebuilding Support Office in the Central African Republic (BONUCA), the Multinational Force of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (FOMUC) and the Community of Sahelo-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) to exchange information on emerging threats to humanitarian activities in the region;

Human rights and the rule of law

(e) To contribute to the monitoring and to the promotion and protection of human rights, with particular attention to sexual and gender-based violence, and to recommend action to the competent authorities, with a view to fighting impunity;

(f) To support, within its capabilities, efforts aimed at strengthening the capacity of the Governments of Chad and the Central African Republic and civil society through training in international human rights standards, and efforts to put an end to recruitment and use of children by armed groups;

(g) To assist the Governments of Chad and, notwithstanding the mandate of BONUCA, the Central African Republic in the promotion of the rule of law, including through support for an independent judiciary and a strengthened legal system, in close coordination with United Nations agencies.”

The Security Council, acting under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations, also:

(a) Authorizes the European Union to deploy, for a period of one year from the date that its initial operating capability is declared by the European Union in consultation with the Secretary-General, an operation (hereinafter referred to as “the European Union operation”) aimed at supporting the elements referred to in paragraphs 2 to 4, and decides that this operation shall be authorized to take all necessary measures, within its capabilities and its area of operation in eastern Chad and the north-eastern Central African Republic, to fulfil the following functions, in accordance with the arrangement to be concluded between the European Union and the United Nations, in liaison with the Governments of Chad and the Central African Republic:

(i) To contribute to protecting civilians in danger, particularly refugees and displaced persons;

(ii) To facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and the free movement of humanitarian personnel by helping to improve security in the area of operations;

(iii) To contribute to protecting United Nations personnel, facilities, installations and equipment and to ensuring the security and freedom of movement of its staff and United Nations and associated personnel.

(b) Authorizes the European Union operation, at the close of the period referred to in subparagraph a, to take all appropriate measures to achieve an orderly disengagement, by means including fulfilment of the functions indicated in subparagraph a, and within the limits of its residual capacity.”

The Council also, among other things, invited the European Union operation to immediately take all appropriate measures to prepare its full operational capability and requested the Secretary-General to coordinate closely with the European Union particularly with regard to those arrangements required to ensure appropriate protection for United Nations personnel, facilities, installations and equipment and ensure freedom of movement of United Nations staff.

The Security Council, by its resolution 1861 of 14 January 2009, extended MINURCAT’s mandate for a period of 12 months in order to help create the security conditions conducive to a voluntary, secure and sustainable return of refugees and displaced persons, inter alia by contributing to the protection of refugees, displaced persons and civilians in danger; by facilitating the provision of humanitarian assistance in eastern Chad and the north-eastern Central African Republic; and by creating favourable conditions for the reconstruction and economic and social development of those areas.

In the same resolution, the Council authorized the deployment of a military component of MINURCAT to follow up EUFOR in both Chad and the Central African Republic at the end of its mandate on 15 March 2009.

It decided that MINURCAT should include a maximum of 300 police officers, 25 military liaison officers, 5,200 military personnel, and an appropriate number of civilian personnel.

The Council further decided that MINURCAT should have the following mandate in eastern Chad and the north-eastern Central African Republic, in liaison with the United

Nations country team and, as appropriate, in liaison with the United Nations Peacebuilding Support Office in the Central African Republic (BONUCA) and

without prejudice to the mandate of BONUCA:

Security and protection of civilians

(a) To select, train, advise and facilitate support to elements of the Détachement intégré de sécurité;
