My former student, Lee Byron, has kindly gifted me with a port of Yellowtail to the iPhone! Lee writes:

"Tonight I got my Developers Cert for iPhone. First things first, I made a promise. Golan, here is Yellowtail on iPhone! Give me another day and I'll have multi-touch spawning multiple wigglers at the same time.

Despite a semester of it, I still am not comfortable programming in Objective C. So this is also a demo of a rudimentary GLUT for iPhone, realistically just a massive hack though. I have a draw loop and 'touch' callback actions. And it's all in C++. I'm really missing the things I take for granted like 'max' and 'millis' and 'drawRect'. OpenGL-ES forces you to be a little trickier."

Lee has more information here: leebyron.com/how/2008/08/31/iphone-yellowtail/

Lee is a rising star, responsible for some wonderful visualizations and about to help direct infoviz projects at Facebook. Keep an eye out for his work.

As we have all heard of and wanted. The dreamed of Mac Tablet. Well now, I introduce you with a concept I put together. Here is how I imagine the Mac 'Tablet'. Although, this device is a bit smaller than a usual tablet'.

this device contains a 7" Multi-touch glass screen with a black frame and chrome bezel around the screen. It's more like an enlarged iPod Touch rather than a 'tablet', which usual contain a larger screen. It would have a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Processor, 512MB - 1GB of RAM, 64GB flash memory, bluetooth, WiFi, and a cut down version of OS X Leopard or 'Snow Leopard' to fit the device.

Holy cow! It's a Tablet with an optional docking station/keyboard.

When it's docked, it looks/acts like a mini-laptop (but with a touch screen).

The keyboard increases the battery life of the tablet (cause it takes a charge too), plus connects to HDMI, and has USB2 and SD slots. So small, it fits in my purse! ...and it features Nvidia's Tegra 3 quad-core mobile processor.

Part six of my iPod collecting adventure arrived this week in the form of the iPod Nano 6th Generation 8GB which I was lucky enough to receive as an early birthday present this week. It was purchased from the new Covent Garden Apple Store which was an incredible retail environment that has been lovingly restored and provided a great place to show off all of the new Apple designs.

Once I was dragged away from the 11.6" MacBook Air (kicking and screaming) I eventually decided on the 8GB Nano, for me to try to use as a watch, but mainly to be used when running. The hardware is amazingly small, so small that it really takes you by surprise when you see it in the flesh for the first time. The multi-touch display, although small, is amazingly responsive and the whole experience is brilliant.

I will be writing a full review for my personal blog at jonhume.co.uk but for now enjoy the unboxing photos.

Every once in a while a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything. One is very fortunate if you get to work on just one of these in your career. Apple has been very fortunate that it's been able to introduce a few of these into the world. In 1984 we introduced the Macintosh. It didn't just change Apple, it changed the whole industry. In 2001 we introduced the first iPod, and it didn't just change the way we all listened to music, it changed the entire music industry.

Well today, we're introducing THREE revolutionary new products. The first one is a widescreen iPod with touch controls. The second is a revolutionary new mobile phone. And the third is a breakthrough internet communications device.

An iPod, a phone, an internet mobile communicator. An iPod, a phone, an internet mobile communicator…. these are NOT three separate devices! And we are calling it iPhone!

Jobs: Let's not use a stylus, we're going to use the best pointing device in the world — our fingers. We have invented a new technology called multi-touch. It works like magic, you don't need a stylus. It's far more accurate than any interface ever shipped, it ignores unintended touches, supports multi-finger gestures, and BOY have we patented it!

Canon Australia has today announced the latest addition to Australia’s top-selling interchangeable lens camera system1, combining renowned EOS DSLR quality in an ultra-compact body that’s fun and easy to use – the Canon EOS M. The new EOS M will launch with two specially designed new lenses – the EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM standard zoom lens and the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM ultra compact pancake lens – along with the ability to use the full line of Canon EF and EF-S lenses through the optional Mount Adapter EF-EOS M.

.

“The new Canon EOS M is for people who want an EOS camera with them wherever they go, ready to capture life’s moments in the highest quality,” says Rebecca Pearson, Assistant Brand Manager, Canon EOS, Canon Australia. “These people are aware of the limitations of their current compact camera or smartphone but, while they’re serious about taking great shots, they want to be lost in the moment not the camera manual. Existing EOS digital SLR camera users will also welcome the option of a compact camera body to use with their existing EF and EF-S lenses as the situation requires.”

.

The EOS M has been developed alongside the new EOS 650D digital SLR camera and shares many components, including the 18 megapixel APS-C sensor with on-chip phase detection AF and the DiG!C 5 image processor. The removal of the mirrorbox assembly and viewfinder allows the camera to be around 50% lighter and significantly smaller2 while enabling the same high level of image quality. Quality extends to renowned EOS performance features including outstanding low-light shooting with an ISO range of 100–12800 expandable to 25600 (H) and 4.3 frame-per-second high-speed burst shooting (One Shot AF).

.

“The EOS M represents 25 years of Canon EOS heritage in quality imaging and reflects feedback from users of some of the 50-million cameras and almost 80-million lenses that we have produced since 1987,” says Pearson. “We’ve taken time to develop a compact system that achieves the desired size, weight and simplicity without any compromise in EOS quality.”

.

The EOS M places control at your fingertips with a capacitive Touch Screen 3.0-inch Clear View II LCD monitor (approximately 1.04 million dots) with smudge-resistant coating. Multi-touch operation enables Touch Focus and Touch Shutter operation as well as familiar reviewing gestures such as "pinch-to-zoom" and "swiping" to scroll between pictures. Moreover, the Feature Guide provides simple on-screen explanations of features as they are selected.

.

Canon’s new shooting modes (Handheld Night Scene, HDR Backlight Control and Multi-Shot Noise Reduction) take multiple pictures, and combine them – in camera – to help capture a wider dynamic range, minimise the image grain or noise, and produce more vivid colours so landscapes and city scenes are as breathtaking as when seen in person.

.

Canon’s Scene Intelligent Auto mode analyses the scene being shot, taking into account faces, colours, brightness, movement and contrast, to select appropriate camera settings for the best possible image.

.

Creative fun for all levels

.

In Creative Auto Mode, the EOS M makes creative shooting easy by allowing inexperienced photographers to control certain elements of the image. When taking a portrait for example, the degree of “background blur” can be adjusted on screen using a sliding scale, eliminating the need to understand technical concepts such as aperture settings. Moreover, seven Creative Filters are a simple way to put a creative spin on everyday images at the press of a button.

.

Full HD EOS movie

.

The EOS M camera employs Canon’s Hybrid CMOS AF system to deliver fast autofocus speed for both photos and videos. The Hybrid CMOS AF system truly shines when shooting video with EOS Full HD Movie mode including Movie Servo AF for continuous autofocus and tracking of moving subjects. Thanks to Canon’s new Stepping Motor (STM) technology, when using either of the new M-series lenses the AF system remains silent, helping ensure users only capture the sound of the scene being recorded. The EOS M also features a built-in stereo microphone, which includes an attenuator function to reduce audio distortion in extra loud situations.

.

New M-Series Lenses and Accessories

.

Along with the EOS M camera, Canon is also introducing a new series of lenses for the device that leverage Canon’s STM technology, allowing the lenses to smoothly and silently focus and, when used in combination with the Movie Servo AF feature, achieve continuous AF while recording video. The STM technology in both new lenses quietly achieves focus and allows the camera’s stereo microphone to only record the sounds of the scene being shot and not the whir of the AF typical in other interchangeable lens cameras.

.

The EOS M with EF Mount Adapter and EF lens

.

The EF-M 22mm f/2 STM ultra compact pancake lens is ideal for shooting still scenes such as family portraits or travel locations. The fixed focal length lens boasts an incredible aperture of f/2.0 and, when combined with the camera’s APS-C image sensor, provides beautiful background blur for both stills and video. For a bit more focal range versatility, Canon is also introducing the new EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM standard zoom lens, which provides a great zoom range for general use with photographing or video recording family and friends. Both lenses are designed specifically for use with the EOS M camera.

.

In addition to the two lenses, any of Canon’s EF and EF-S lenses can be used with the EOS M camera with the optional Mount Adapter EF-EOS M. Using the adapter allows the camera to be fully integrated into the EOS ecosystem of more than 60 Canon EF and EF-S lenses, adding creative options and versatility to this powerful camera. Also, when shooting EOS movies, the adapter allows key features such as Movie Servo AF for continuous focus tracking of moving subjects to be used.

.

Ideal for use with the EOS M camera, Canon is also announcing a new compact and lightweight flash unit, the SpeedLite 90EX, designed for the photographer on the go. The SpeedLite 90EX is capable of coverage for 24mm wide angle lens shots, and has a guide number of 9 meters at ISO 100. The flash can wirelessly control slave units for creative multiple-flash shoots and uses the standard Canon EOS hotshoe mount for compatibility with all EOS DSLR cameras and PowerShot digital cameras that include a hotshoe.

.

Other optional accessories include the GP-E2 GPS receiver and the RC-6 Wireless Remote control unit. The EOS M is compatible with SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards, including new Ultra High Speed (UHS-I) cards.

.

The EOS M will be available through Canon retailers from early October 2012 in three configurations:

.

Body only with Mount Adapter EF-EOS M (EOS M body colour Black only)

Single IS Lens Kit (EOS M body in Black, bundled with 18-55 EF-M lens and the SpeedLite 90EX)

Pancake Twin Lens Kit (EOS M body in a choice of Black, Red or White, bundled with 18-55 EF-M lens, 22mm EF-M pancake lens and the SpeedLite 90EX)

.

Additionally, the new EF-M lenses and Mount Adapter EF-EOS M will be available for individual purchase. Pricing is set at dealer discretion. For more information, customers can contact Canon on 1800 021 167

Dear Madam, dear Sir,

We are working on the prospective part of the exhibition about mixity in the city organized by the L'Observatoire de la ville (Observatory of the city) (www.observatoire-de-la-ville.com/), the foundation of Bouygues Immobilier .

This exhibition will take place from 15 May to 15 July 2012 at La Cité de L'Architecture et du Patrimoine à Paris (www.citechaillot.fr/).

L'Observatoire de la ville /The observatory in the city

Created in 2006 by Bouygues Immobilier, the Observatoire de la ville is open to all actors who "make" the city (residents, elected officials, architects, planners ...) It is a place for information, forward thinking and discussion to create a think tank and develop innovative solutions for the city of tomorrow.

Exhibition MIX (CITY) at la Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine:

This exhibition is composed of two stages:

* First part will show the work and auditions conducted by the expert committee on the topic of mixity and its various facets (morphological, social, functional)

* Second part that we are in charge of, is a "prospective" approach and is organized around two visions of the mixity for the city of tomorrow:

- NEW PLACES FOR MIXITY: places that involve and create new opportunities and expressions of "living the city together," new agoras, cultural and recreational areas, shared gardens.

- PARTICIPATIVE MIXITY: co-creation, collaborative process, participation and interactive cultures enrich and build on the new interfaces, social networking, digital democracy for citizens and residents in the city of tomorrow.

We would have liked to reproduce the picture below, selected on walkingpaper web site and for which we request your permission to use, as an example of a good practice in our theme PARTICIPATIVE MIXITY, and

* present it at the exhibition, so we need to have it in the highest definition as possible

* include it in the catalogue of the exhibition (to be confirmed by the client), edited in 1000 units by AMC Le Moniteur Architecture (professional architectural newspaper, Le Moniteur Architecture AMC is for contractors, the masters of public and private projects and all their partners).

* Include it on the Observatoire de la ville's website (virtual visite of the exhibition)

Of course name of the author and caption of the photo will be mentioned (exact details to be provided to us).

Looking forward to hearing from you and staying at your disposal for any further information,

Best regards,

Gagarin is proud to announce the opening of a new interactive exhibition on renewable energy for Landsvirkjun Power Company at the hydro power station Búrfellsvirkjun. Gagarin produced the exhibition, created the concept and managed the development and implementation.

The purpose of this exhibition is to give visitors insight into how the power plants in Iceland operate, about future energy sources, Iceland’s geology and the energy usage of household appliances.

Gagarin’s ambition for this exhibition was to actively engage the visitors with innovative interactive installation. For example the visitors can operate a hydro power station, learn about the power plants in Iceland in an interactive table and use actual plug-ins to show the energy usage of household appliances.

The exhibition opened on June 11 and welcomes visitors every day throughout the summer.

Gagarin would like to thank the many colleagues that helped make this exhibition come alive:

The first of my new Project 365 attempt. A silly picture combining the modern computing world with what I consider a true throwback to proper text-based computing; Vim. I still use Vim on a daily basis at work. In fact, my computer screens are pretty much covered with tiled terminals and vim instances. No pointing devices, no touchable screens, no cursor keys (if you're a purist). Just you and a ridiculously powerful, expressive editor. None of your ham-fisted multi-touch hand mashing, anyway.

Vim for iOS is real. I didn't make it up just for this shot. You can get it here: applidium.com/en/applications/vim/

Be warned; it's blooming horrible. Escape is mapped to \ so it's 3 pressed just to exit insert mode ...

PenGo App

From Imagination

15-30 minutes

I'm home with a cold and not up for much so I've been updating some of my Apps. I haven't done much with this one but had fun playing with it after loading the update today.

Interestingly, this company makes styluses for touch devices. But their app has some interesting multi-touch features (ie features using 2 or 3 fingers together) which... you would not be able to do with a stylus.

The most interesting one allows you to control the width of a line while drawing by spreading your fingers apart/together. It was fun to fool around with but would take some doing to learn to control.

This app has some definite interface annoyances. For instance, you have to name your file to save it. But then when you email it, it attaches the file with a generic name. How silly is that?
