Gagarin is proud to announce the opening of a new interactive exhibition on renewable energy for Landsvirkjun Power Company at the hydro power station Búrfellsvirkjun. Gagarin produced the exhibition, created the concept and managed the development and implementation.
The purpose of this exhibition is to give visitors insight into how the power plants in Iceland operate, about future energy sources, Iceland’s geology and the energy usage of household appliances.
Gagarin’s ambition for this exhibition was to actively engage the visitors with innovative interactive installation. For example the visitors can operate a hydro power station, learn about the power plants in Iceland in an interactive table and use actual plug-ins to show the energy usage of household appliances.
The exhibition opened on June 11 and welcomes visitors every day throughout the summer.
Gagarin would like to thank the many colleagues that helped make this exhibition come alive:

I picked up a Sony PRS-T1 e-reader this week. Nice and light, and holds more text than I will ever need - over a million pages, or 300 yards or so bookshelf space.
It has a nifty multi-touch infrared screen - next photo.
Before James Murdoch's visit at the SKY booth everybody (but us :-) was really scared (in panic, actually :-). But, eventually, everything went fine: he's a very easy going person and was positively impressed by the table.
He actually said: "WOW" :-)
The picture was taken with my iPhone, since the studio's NikonD80 was stolen in Rimini.
We hope that God will punish the thief with ethernal grief. Anyway... shit happens :-(

We’ve been using Ciphone C4 for a couple months now, and our first impressions mainly consisted of “CiPhone C4 Capacitive Touchscreen makes Windows Mobile a gazillion times better to use”. But how can you figure out what the difference between Capacitive and Resistive Touch screens really are?
For the professional technical details, please read the Wikipedia articles on Resistiveand Capacitive technology.
Cell Phones and other personal electronics devices such as tablet PCs are sometimes equipped with touch screens, while in the cell phone industry there are two major categories of touchscreen displays: capacitive touchscreens and resistive touchscreens.
What is capacitive and resistive touchscreen?
Capacitive touchscreen displays rely on the electrical properties of the human body to detect when and where on a display the user touching. Because of this, capacitive displays can be controlled with very light touches of a finger and generally cannot be used with a mechanical stylus or a gloved hand. Examples of devices with capacitive touchscreen are the Ciphone C4and Ciphone 4 A3 Android.
Resistive touchscreen displays are composed of multiple layers that are separated by thin spaces. Pressure applied to the surface of the display by a finger or stylus causes the layers to touch, which completes electrical circuits and tells the device where the user is touching. As such, resistive type touchscreens require much more pressure to activate than capacitive touchscreen. Examples of devices with resistive touchscreens are the A4 Touchscreen GPS Phone and 4G+++ WiFi Phone.
What’s the difference between Capacitive and Resistive?
A capacitive touchscreen measures the interaction between an electrical signal on a transparent grid above the screen and the user’s finger. A capacitive screen is beautifully smooth to operate because it just requires the presence of your finger, not any pressure. The flip side of this is that you can’t use a stylus. Well, actually there is a kind of chunky stylus that mimics the capacitance of a human finger, but it’s not elegant to use.
While a resistive touchscreen has two thin layers of conductive but transparent film above the screen, and measures the change in resistance between the two layers due to the pressure of touch. Resistive touchscreens are cheaper to make, but don’t support multi-touch. If the user presses with more than one finger the device can’t determine the position of the multiple fingers. Multi-touch for resistive displays has been demonstrated in the lab, but is not currently practical for consumer devices. A resistive screen can be made pressure-sensitive, so that applications may distinguish between a light and a heavy touch. A capacitive screen just knows “finger present” and “finger absent”.
To be quite honest, the only positive I’ve heard about resistive touchscreens, is that it is a screen tech which works with gloved hands and a stylus. But personally, I’ve found that using even a resistive screen with outdoor winter gloved hands is just about impossible. I feel capacitive is a lot more responsive on average and I quite prefer how the screen needs to only be touched, not pressed. I also like that Capacitive touchscreen which is much more durable and scratch-resistant. So what’s your opinion? Leave your comment and share with us.

There is no doubt that the tablet market is rapidly evolving and it consequently influences the kiosk sector. Our latest example of this development is an out-of-the-box kiosk solution that solely uses a commercial tablet instead of a screen and a computer as most often seen.
The kiosk has a inbuild tablet with a 18,5" multi-touch screen, WIFI, front camera, USB ports, it runs an Android operating system and has a standard player that can autoplay content such as videos, picture slideshows etc. The tablet is attached by a VESA mounting system inside the kiosk.
We have used our flexible aluminium profile system and designed the kiosk to enclose and support the tablet device. This kiosk has been designed in two different models, one model with an integrated keyboard and another one without.
In some cases an all-in-one solution like this offers a price-attractive alternative to a traditional commercial kiosk.

Working with Hard Rock International’s crack technology, property-development and memorabilia teams, and our friends and software development partner Vertigo, Duncan/Channon designed three interfaces for the new flagship cafe on the Las Vegas Strip. These include two custom apps for Microsoft Surface – the multi-touch, multi-user, interactive tabletop – as well as a touch-based interface for the restaurant’s 38 booths, where guests can manipulate memorabilia, peruse merchandise and vote on what video plays next in the cafe.
With the new ArtSurface multi-user glass tables, you can amaze, educate, consult and entertain your customers in a unique way. A 32″, 40″ or 55″ multi-touch surface integrate brilliant full HD picture with 2 to 40 touch points and object tags recognition layer. One-to-one meetings, family consultations or a dozen of kids, playing that new game – the interaction between users, software and content opens great new opportunities and is something they will talk about for months. ArtSurface in your custom size and style can be a perfect center in your office, architecture studio, health/ SPA center, hotel, bar or restaurant.

This is the first test with Open Exhibits for the exhibit Z-OUT @ art center Z33 in Belgium.
The project Z-out is an art project from Z33 that will place artworks in the scenery of the region the first city is Borgloon where there is a route of 15km with 6-8 artworks. With this project we try to show the user the before and after of the exhibit in an interactive way. We also want user generated content like reviews, images, etc. in the multitouch project. We used the Video, Image, Youtube, and Flickr modules.
We altered the structure from Open Exhibits so that the gui’s are separate xml files and all the content is one xml file. By doing this it was easier to integrate this with the current website. We are currently working on an interactive storyline, kml implementations and the link with mobile devices so we can plot routes, time the user looks at the artwork, recommendations, video streaming etc..

The project takes as a starting point Brussels’ 145 m high Dexia Tower, from which 4200 windows can be individually colour-enlightened, by RGB-led bars, turning the façade into an immense display.
Instead of considering this infrastructure as a flat screen (surface) displaying pre-rendered video loops, the project is working on the architectural characteristics of the tower and its urban context. The characteristics of the building; orientation, volume, scale... are used as parameters to set up a spatial, temporal and luminous concept, which moreover allows people to directly interact with the tower.
On Place Rogier, at the bottom of the tower, a station is mounted where people can interact either individually or collectively with the visual and luminous display (= the tower) through a multi touch screen. Both static (touch) as dynamic input (gesture) is recognized to generate an elementary graphical language of points, lines and surfaces combined with physical behaviours (growth, weight, ...) taking a monochromatic colour palette (background) combined with black and white (graphical elements).
Once a composition is created, it can be sent as an electronic postcard with a snapshot from the tower, taken from a distant location. It is also uploaded on the specific project website ( www.dexia-tower.com ) where people can retrieve their postcard, as electronic and printable format, with Christmas and New Year’s wishes from Brussels.
Plain old telephone service (POTS) is the voice-grade telephone service that remains the basic form of residential and small business service connection to the telephone network in most parts of the world. The name is a retronym, and is a reflection of the telephone service still available after the advent of more advanced forms of telephony such as ISDN, mobile phones and VoIP. POTS has been available almost since the introduction of the public telephone system in the late 19th century, in a form mostly unchanged to the normal user despite the introduction of Touch-Tone dialing, electronic telephone exchanges and fiber-optic communication into the public switched telephone network (PSTN).
