A population explosion of diatoms in a mudpuddle produced a brown scum on the water, and the scum had the peculiar property of fracturing when disturbed.My fingertip produced starlike cracks.

Signs of spring or "break up" in Fairbanks, Alaska. Puddles and gravel on the roads left over from winter.

I found this in the early Spring of 2011. Just a lone shoe in a mud puddle.

so, this is a funny story.

julie and i were out shooting at night and decided that we'd stop at a local business parking lot to play in our socks in mud puddles (who doesn't love to play in mud puddles??). well.

apparently a police officer driving on the freeway saw us, turned around and came back to see what we were up to.

julie (who is surprisingly cool under pressure) smoothed the whole thing over and we were free to go.

although i will say that it would have been sort of funny had he taken us into the station for trespassing (especially in light of whose business it was). : )

the beauty of the world surrounding her.

Doris and I got this shot, quite by accident, as we were returning from our outing at the Statehouse.

It stopped raining so we decided to go outside. This quickly turned into a mud bath. They had so much fun splashing in that mud puddle. I had to give them a pre-bath before their actual bath because they were so dirty.

There's nothing like a nice refreshing bath in a mudpuddle at the end of a long day. Chipping Sparrow on Mount Bonnell in Austin, Texas.

Ugh I would never drink this muddy water unless I was forced to by local bullies.

According to the map in the 1970 soil survey of Wood and Wirt counties, soils here are predominantly a complex of Alfisols (Typic Hapludalfs) of the Upshur series and Inceptisols (Typic Dystrudepts) of the Muskingum series. The orange water is maybe caused by the Upshur soil I guess?

This group of mud miniature volcanoes are on the north end of the "Microcasm Basin" in the Pocket Basin Mudpots (officially called The Mud Volcanoes) which is located in the Lower Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park. This year was an extremely wet one and some the mud volcanoes were in a large puddle on the south end of this group. Many of the miniature mud volcanoes were still active with small mud flows going out into the water as is the case with the mud volcano in the foreground of this photo.
