For about 5 minutes, Mt. Fuji revealed herself before the clouds came in from the southwest like a veil. The ride up to Owakudani from Hakone-Yumoto snaked up many valleys and hills, so Fuji only became visible near the summit.
Along the shape and symmetry of the mountain, part of the charm arises from the fact that no other mountains that size close by, let alone any place else with that much snow cover. Imagine Pikes Peak without the rest of the Front Range and that makes a comparative start.
On the second day, we could see Mt Fuji very clearly from the ropeway. It was too bad any photos had to be taken through the cable car's thick glass windows. Yet by pressing against them or using a polariser, the reflections could be minimised.
The Mr and I went on a hike through the lava tubes known as Ape Caves near Mt. St. Helens. It was awesome.

Mt. Umunhum is one of the most prominent hills in the South Bay. (I would have said it was the tallest hill in the Santa Cruz mountains, but Wikipedia corrected that misconception.) The boxy structure on top helps it stand out.
Following the Almaden Quicksilver Historic Trail, Mt. Umunhum pops into view right as you meet up with the Hidalgo Trail. I was surprised to see it so close. (The closest I've been to it before was when I did a flickr stroll in the snow; I didn't capture it well then but Digital Trav did!)
