Large Pencil-tailed Tree Mouse (Chiropodomys major) - Danum Valley, Malaysia
A particularly photogenic mouse stops scrambling through the vegetation and takes a second to look at me. These mice live off a mostly vegetarian diet and keep to the trees. The reading I have done states that Chiropodomys is in general an uncommon and seldom studied genus, in contrast I found these mice to be relatively common in the jungle at night. Atleast this was the case during the second field season, during my first field season I never encountered them, its anecdotal evidence but I think perhaps because it was a mast year with many trees producing fruit and seeds that these mice were easier to encounter as they moved around looking for food.

Harvest Mouse was so named because they inhabit arable fields where they love to feed on cereal grains. This is a captive individual but when I let him climb onto a wheat stalk he immediately extracted a grain and polished it off there and then. Modern combine harvesters cannot be good news for Harvest Mice but "Beetle Banks" have given them a surprise lifeline. These were banks of tall, uncut vegetation between cereal fields intended to harbour beneficial predatory insects that feed on arable pests. But because they are never cut, the tall vegetation is the perfect place for Harvest Mouse nests. A study in Leicestershire in 1998 found that beetle banks held 117 nests per hectare compared with just 14 nests per hectare of hedgerows.

Mouse: Linus wake up ! Linus ! LINUS !!!
Linus: What ... do ... you ... want ?!!!
Mouse: I have to tell you a story.
Linus: No !
Mouse: What do you mean, no ? It's important !
Linus: I have enough of your stories and I'm sleeping.
Mouse: How come you are talking if you are asleep ?
Linus: I always talk in my sleep, ask mom !
Mouse: So you listen to my story now ?
Linus: NO ! I need my sleep to recharge my batteries !
Mouse: To do what ?
Linus: Hunt pesky mice, for instance !
Mouse: You haven't caught any mouse in months.
Linus: I could catch one if I wanted to. I could catch YOU !
Mouse: I don't think so.
Linus: And why ? I'm a cat after all !
Mouse: Yes, but you are specialised on THE BIRDS. Mice are different, we are smarter.
Linus: I wouldn't tempt fate if I were you. Cats are quite smart too.
Mouse: Cats in general, maybe, but you .....
Linus: That's enough ! You better sneak off now before I forget that I'm specialised on birds !
There is another capture in the comments. :)
Heh. Miss Mousie was kind enough to pause for a few moments to let me photograph her(or him) before disappearing into the woods.

Apodemus sylvaticus
Was trying to catch some Wrens near our wood pile today but instead found someone else who likes wood piles.
Differentiated from House Mouse by brown tan colour on top and white underneath. Head is more curved. Also larger eyes and bigger hind feet.
I made this last night and it was quite fiddly working with linen fabric. I am quite happy with the result.
This tiny little mouse is only slightly bigger than the slice of fruit it is nibbling at…. Very very cute at Basel Zoo, Switzerland.
From a bicoloured square of kraft paper.
Trying some colour changes in my mouse.

Moltes gràcies, Ramon!
The yellow-necked mouse (Apodemus flavicollis), also called yellow-necked field mouse, yellow-necked wood mouse, and South China field mouse,is closely related to the wood mouse, with which it was long confused. It was only recognised as a separate species in 1894. It differs in its band of yellow fur around the neck and in having slightly larger ears and usually being slightly larger overall. Around 100 mm in length, it can climb trees and sometimes overwinters in houses. It is found mostly in mountainous areas of southern Europe, but extends north into parts of Scandinavia and Britain. It facilitates the spread of tick-borne encephalitis to humans and is a reservoir species for the Dobrava virus, a hantavirus that is responsible for causing haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow-necked_mouse
Shaped cloud in a beautiful blue summer sky. I saw this cloud while walking down our street in Carmel, New York.
Crazy Tuesday: December decorations
I came across a set of wreath ornaments while shopping the other day and couldn't resist! Each one has a different animal inside (hare, fox, bird, and this little mouse).
When I first got Mouse Manor. I had a horrible time pulling off the furry fabric they used for carpeting. I still can't get it all off. Luckily I have the 3rd floor and the 2nd floor far right rooms finished now with wood flooring.
When I looked around for what in my house was coloured blue I found quite a few things ( I like the colour). So there is this vase. Thick, blue and interestingly shaped with a history of being dropped from my buffet hutch onto the tiled floor and surviving! It was given as a Christmas present from my employer many years ago and bears the organisation logo! The mouse is my first wireless one which works well. Together they reflect the reality of my work - online within a large organization!
