going back again... not long now

It was early morning low light on a cloudy day (wouldn’t you figure) when this Red-shouldered Hawk saw and captured the mouse shown in this image. The hawk was on a snag, clearly hunting from its close inspection of the surroundings. It leaned forward and dove, hovered for a second or two then went talons first into the grass where I could not see it. Minutes later it lifted off with its prize. Lafayette, Colorado.....the mouse is actually just a play toy...the traps were set to keep my friend's cats from using this area as their bathroom :-)

The area is named for an outlaw that used to hide here in the 1980's. Amongst the rocks is a natural basin that fills with water after rainfalls.

Daisy likes small toys that she can pick up & carry around easily. Coloured mice, especially with feather tails, are favourite toys. Happy Caturday!

Harvest mouse eating seeds of Old Man's Beard. One of a pair of captive bred mice.

Own home West Dorset.

Rusty [ our cat] brought in this live mouse the other day. I, of course, rescued it immediately so no harm could come to it.

The price of freedom is posing for my camera before release. This container normally holds my mother's ring I inherited after her passing five years ago. She probably wouldn't have approved of me putting the mouse in it.

Have a great Monday / week everyone. Off to walk my dad's dog Annie.

This mouse or bank vole? did come to a puddle for a drink but prompted by your comments i remember it couldn't walk properly so perhaps had something more serious wrong with it

One of these days I'm going to cross Big Creek and shoot Mouse Creek from the other side of the river, but on this day that water flow was just too strong to even think about it. :) -H3

The story of how it came to be called the "Mouse Tower" comes from a folk tale. According to this popular, but unsubstantiated, legend, Hatto II was a cruel ruler who oppressed and exploited the peasants in his domain. He used the tower as a platform for archers and crossbowmen and demanded tribute from passing ships, shooting on their crews if they did not comply. During a famine in 974 the poor had run out of food, but Hatto, having all the grain stored up in his barns, used his monopoly to sell it at such high prices that most could not afford it.

The peasants became angry and were planning to rebel, so Hatto devised a cruel trick. He promised to feed the hungry people and told them to go to an empty barn and wait for him to come with food. The peasants were overjoyed and praised Hatto heartily. They made their way to the barn to await his coming. When he arrived with his servants, he ordered the barn's doors shut and locked, then set the barn on fire and burned the peasants to death, derisively commenting on their death cries with the words "Hear the mice squeak!" (This quote exists in several slight variations.)

When Hatto returned to his castle, he was immediately besieged by an army of mice. He fled the swarm and took a boat across the river to his tower, hoping that the mice could not swim. The mice followed, pouring into the river in their thousands. Many drowned, but even more reached the island, where they ate through the tower's doors and crawled up to the top floor, where they found Hatto and ate him alive. (Wikipedia) Bingen, Germany

The harvest mouse is tiny - an adult can weigh as little as a 2p piece! It prefers habitats with long grass, but you are most likely to spot its round, woven-grass nests - or in a teapot.

Harvest mouse feeding on seeds of Yarrow, Great fun on a very wet weekend, taken in own garage with a pair of captive bred mice. Three flashes used two on subject and one on background.

Just mucking about and thought this might make a good image, my mouse and mousemat.
