The first morning we got there, snow covered most of the ground. I had to shovel about four inches of snow to clear a place to pitch our tent. It was beautiful!

There were some beautiful areas near the canyon, but I was surprised the cattle were this area... Note that in on the USGS Maps this canyon does not have a name - in the Cowgill and Glendening guide this is called Edgar Canyon (which is one drainage south on the USGS Maps).

The cliffs below Point 5817 are a prominent feature when looking down into this area.

Not a huge garbage bag but more a disappointing amount more than usually goes into my trash bag.

Photos from a hike on Mount Lemmon. We went past the old radar station (now the UA Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter) and through Lemmon Park, then looped back on the power line road.

Scanned Kodachrome transparency, adjusted with Picasa.

The sun started descending into the horizon as my daughter and i ascended the Catalina range, just outside Tucson, Az driving an alpine roadway en route to Mount Lemmon. Somewhere around 5000 ft above sea level we started to see snow dustings along the road. We stopped just below the Palisades at a popular vista point. I let my daughter play in the snow for the first time of her life.

The ridge below the Knagge Trail has some lovely open grassy sections.

Back in 2003 a fire destroyed much of Summerhaven (the small town at the summit of Mount Lemmon). Evidently nearly 300 homes and buildings were destroyed.

Here you can see a dead tree surrounded by new growth.

This snake had no interest in letting us use this section of the trail...
