Sunset was pretty spectacular over Tucson - of course it helped tremendously to be at about 6,500 feet near the "General Hitchcock" formation on the Mount Lemmon highway. After sunset, cars heading down the mountain formed a red line where you see the roadway above.
I have been higher in the West on foot, but I believe this was the highest I've been by car... and this is still about 3,000 feet from the top of Mount Lemmon!
You can also take the big view.

I joined Ned and the gang on the final summer Mount Lemmon hike on August 26 2015. We hiked the loop formed by the Mt. Lemmon Trail and the Meadow Trail (formerly the Power Line Road and the Lemmon Park Trail) at the top of the mountain.

So much of the town was destroyed by fire a few years ago, it was shocking. This sign recommends steps to make houses less vulnerable to forest fires.
We had not planned to drive up to Summerhaven on Sunday, so I had no suitable camera with me in the car. The iPhone's camera is like my parents' Brownie Box Camera, but with color!
It's always at least 10 degrees F cooler in Summerhaven atop Mount Lemmon in the Santa Catalina Mountains just north of Tucson. Summerhaven is in a "sky island" of conifer trees above the tree line. It looks a lot like the White Mountains of New Hampshire, or the White mountains of northern Arizona. It's a pleasant drive up the mountain. There are a number of hiking trails and campsites. The views are spectacular.
Be warned, there is not much to see or do in the town itself..;)
The town suffered a devastating fire a few years ago. Many houses were burned, and the forest was blackened and looked really sad. It is amazing how well the green has returned.
"Just as the wayfarer only surveys and reconizes the road he has come when he reaches some high place and can look back over it in its entirety, so we ourselves are only able to reconize and value a stage in our life when it is over." Arthur Schopenhauer.
Though I cannot agree with much else Schopenhauer wrote, I thought this was well said. I have not been here on Flickr much, as some of you may have noticed; I am far down the left fork. Perhaps someday I will reach a high place and know why. Perhaps not. Either way, someday, more photos will be forthcoming.
There are many fine (and recent) photos before this.
It was a surprise to see bicycle tire tracks in snow in the summer in Summerhaven. It's atop Mount Lemmon, and is so near Tucson, Arizona. We asked a resident about it. She said it was the remains of a hailstorm. This is our Summer Monsoon season...;))

The drive to the summit of Mount Lemmon is 28 miles. Here you can see a group of Harley-Davidsons swaying through the scenic mountain passes.
