I went hiking and camping around Mt. Lemmon in the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson. That is Tucson in the distance. I hiked the Mt. Lemmon - Lemmon Rock Loop trail which starts with the Mt. Lemmon Trail #12 to the Wilderness of Rocks trail and climbs back out on the Lemmon Rock Trail.

This area is slowly recovering from two devastating fires: the Bullock Fire, which consumed more than 32,000 acres around Mt. Lemmon in the summer of 2002, and the Aspen Fire, which came a year later.

Last Friday, my husband and I celebrated our 5th year marriage anniversary :) and we decided in the last minute to take a day trip to Mount Lemmon, in Tucson, Arizona, to escape from the summer heat. It turned out to be even cooler than we expected, about 76ºF (24ºC), despite the aftermath scene in the background :P. That was caused by the 2003 Aspen Fire which lasted about a month and burnt a significant portion of the Pusch Ridge Wilderness, including many homes and businesses in the town of Summerhaven. The place is slowly recovering though. Now it's the monsoon season and it had been misty all morning. We'd been wondering around through the forest analyzing the area, me taking pictures and him, documenting as future geologist. We make a good team :) As for Mount Lemmon, it is the highest point in the Santa Catalina Mountains, located north of Tucson; standing 9,157 feet (2,791 m) above sea level. Lemmon Trail gives access to a lot of interesting flora, wildlife and sceneries that can be found blooming at this time of year.

August 2012

On July 16 2014 I joined the Sabino Canyon Volunteer Naturalists led hike on Mt. Lemmon. We hiked the loop formed by the Mt. Lemmon Trail and the Meadow Trail (formerly the Power Line Road and the Lemmon Park Trail) at the top of the mountain.

Four RAW files processed with Olympus Viewer 3 and stitched with MS ICE.

That's 140 megapixels. But not quite, because there is no way to upload a 140 megapixel jpeg to Flickr. I had to downsample this 50%, and save as a jpeg with a compression of 8 to get under the 20 megabyte Flickr limit.

Anyway, the usual spot in Sabino Canyon, Tucson, Arizona. The monsoon finally arrived, the temperatures decreased slightly, and the clouds make for pretty pictures. [FYI I desaturated and lowered the contrast of the clouds by 30%].

This is another exercise in "über-resolution" processing. Here, I am combining two processes.

This image is a panorama stitched in CS4 from four vertically-oriented images. Each of the four images is a 57 megapixel image superresolved using PhotoAcute from a burst of eight to ten RAW frames.

So, there you have it. With some practice, I think I can take all these data in less than 30 seconds. A multiple row panorama would yield better results. But, panoramas are like puzzles. Screw up on piece, and the panorama is ruined. This combined panorama/superresolution technique seems more robust to field error.

We'll see.

On the weekend of August 9th Tania's nephew and his wife visited us, so on Saturday we drove them up Mount Lemmon for a short hike and picnic. We followed the Meadow Trail as far as Lemmon Park and the overview.

~~ Unexpected Birds ~~ Morning Fog and Clouds On Mount Lemmon ~~

I didn't notice the birds, I was trying to capture the morning clouds in the valleys on Mount Lemmon, before they evaporated.

Also, you can just barely see the observatories and transmission towers on the top of the mountain... See my post processing experiments below.

To my eye, my experiment,s while enjoyable to me, are not really very successful. I don't have the proper image processing tools anymore.. I do wish I had Matlab, but it is so expensive... I wish they had a less expensive version for retirees...;(

OOh, I just remembered Mathcad. I wonder if i could use that? Or perhaps Gimp... Oh well, lots to explore here i think..

However, I have just committed myself to learn how to bake bread. My Daughters and one Granddaughter will be visiting soon!! Thy are wonderful bakers. I hope to join their club. Does anyone have a baking machine preference?

It was a surprise to see crystalized snow in the summer in Summerhaven on Mount Lemmon near Tucson, Arizona. We asked a resident about it. She said it was the remains of a hailstorm. This is our Summer Monsoon season...;))

We had not planned to drive up to Summerhaven on Sunday, so there was no suitable camera with me in the car. The iPhone's camera is like my parents' Brownie Box Camera, but with color!

It's always at least 10 degrees F cooler in Summerhaven atop Mount Lemmon in the Santa Catalina Mountains just north of Tucson. Summerhaven is in a "sky island" of conifer trees above the tree line. It looks a lot like the White Mountains of New Hampshire, or the White Mountains of northern Arizona. It's a pleasant drive up the mountain. There are a number of hiking trails and campsites. The views are spectacular.

Be warned, there is not much to see or do in the town itself..;)

The town suffered a devastating fire a few years ago. Many houses were burned, and the forest was blackened and looked really sad. It is amazing how well the green has returned.

This is our 4th annual celebration of Halloween pictures! 31 spooky pictures to celebrate 31 Days of October! Enjoy!

I chased up and down Mount Lemmon near Tucson trying to get a good shot, and finally succeeded in Summerhaven, right along the road by a creek. It surely is a beautiful warbler!!

Babad Do'ag means "Frog Mountain" in the Tohono O'odham language. It's the tribe's traditional name for the Catalina Mountains.

First time out with my Sigma 14mm Art f/1.8 lens tonight.

On the road again...

View through a dirty windshield with my little iPhone camera. Plus, some effects. I can't do this properly since my phone is old and does not have HDR built in.

The sun was burning through a cloud on the way down the mountain. Mount Lemmon is a Sky island on the north side of Tucson. We visited Summerhaven which was at least ten degrees cooler and 8000 feet or 2424 meters higher than Tucson.

It should also take longer to cook with water, such as pasta, since the water boils at an even lower temperature than in Tucson.

Conversation with Tania:

-- Hold still a second, there's a bug on the back of your leg.

-- Huh!

-- Never mind, it fell off.

We got a fairly early start on Tuesday June 17 2014 to try to get there ahead of the wind. We were only somewhat successful.
