On the weekend of August 9th Tania's nephew and his wife visited us, so on Saturday we drove them up Mount Lemmon for a short hike and picnic. We followed the Meadow Trail as far as Lemmon Park and the overview.

The Catalina Highway climbs Mount Lemmon 27 miles from Tucson to Summerhaven, Arizona, uphill all the way. The elevation change is from about 2400' to 8200'. That just doesn't seem like fun to me, but we saw quite a few bikes on the road.

Another photo taken on Mt. Lemmon right as it was changing from nautical twilight to civil twilight. The night sky fades really fast during this time! This is known in the photography world as "Blue Hour". It can provide some incredible photos! Hope you enjoy this one!

The Abert's squirrel found a safe perch to enjoy this fungi. The squirrel is demonstrating how it serves an important role of spore dispersal on the mountain
It was a surprise to see crystalized snow in the summer in Summerhaven, on Mount Lemmon, near Tucson, Arizona. We asked a resident about it. She said it was the remains of a hailstorm. This is our Summer Monsoon season...;))
We had not planned to drive up to Summerhaven on Sunday, so there was no suitable camera with me in the car. The iPhone's camera is like my parents' Brownie Box Camera, but with color!
It's always at least 10 degrees F cooler in Summerhaven atop Mount Lemmon in the Santa Catalina Mountains just north of Tucson. Summerhaven is in a "sky island" of conifer trees above the tree line. It looks a lot like the White Mountains of New Hampshire, or the White Mountains of northern Arizona. It's a pleasant drive up the mountain. There are a number of hiking trails and campsites. The views are spectacular.
Be warned, there is not much to see or do in the town itself..;)
The town suffered a devastating fire a few years ago. Many houses were burned, and the forest was blackened and looked really sad. It is amazing how well the green has returned.
This photo was taken on Mt Lemmon as the sun was rising over Tucson, Arizona. This place is just pure magic! The Catalina highway or "Sky Island Parkway", takes you up over 9,000 ft in just 25 miles, and the scenery drastically changes from desert to alpine forests (w/bears).

On a chilly morning, very early in the season, this eastern patch-nosed snake slithered across the trail. He was wonderfully accommodating and peacefully basked on this nearby rock before meandering along. Catalina Mountains, AZ.
