Mosquito (from the Portuguese meaning "small fly") is a common flying insect in the family Culicidae that is found around the world. There are about 3,500 species of mosquitoes. They have a pair of scaled wings, a pair of halteres (small knobbed structures found as a pair in some two-winged insects), a slender body, and six long legs. The females of most mosquito species suck blood (hematophagy) from other animals, which has made them the deadliest disease vector known, killing millions of people over thousands of years and continuing to kill millions per year by the spread of infectious diseases.

Cape Sundew is the common name for Drosera capensis, a tropical sundew.

Heading into Autumn, the mosquitoes are acting like it's a damp mid-summer night. I was getting bitten and so was this deer, but she didn't seem to notice.

Old trees and root slowly becoming driftwood and washing off the island. Capers Island is one of those unique beaches where developement has never touched. The beach is covered i with roots and fallen trees, some extending out fairly far into the Atlantic Ocean.

Capers, accessed only by boat, remains undeveloped, not unchanged. With the exception of a new dock on the island's southwest corner and a few old structures on the island's interior, Capers boasts little improvement. That's not to say that it remains the same as it was before recent hurricanes. For one, there is beach now where many maps show none. Caper's Inlet is shallow, but it was deep enough that at one time folks worried that small submarines could slip though our border. Local lore is that towers, like the one shown in the photo, were constructed during WWII as watches for amphibious invasion.

Once on the island, you can stretch your legs on a network of trails that will connect you with the wildlife. Like Bull Island, you will encounter alligators, deer, raccoons, loggerhead turtles, and numerous birds, including herons, egrets, ibises, bitterns, ospreys and eagles.

You will also encounter a horde of insects throughout the interior of the island and you'll go insane without a toxic slathering of DEET insect repellant. Better yet, wear a baja shirt and use bug netting.

The picture is of my current “smoking room.” It’s actually the front porch, an area I get to share with the smooth taste of my Partagas Cigars, as well as the mosquitoes (with the help of a can of OFF). A Cigar Cave make-over to my room over the garage would definitely help with the itching as well as with the ability to smoke come rain or shine. It would also create a comfortable environment to enjoy the smooth taste of a Partagas cigar with my buddies and it would eliminate the 30 minute drive to the cigar lounge in town. Great place, but a Partagas Cigar Cave would be infinitely cooler. I’ll tell ya, my only alone time is when I get to light a Black up and relax with a cold drink. It would be amazing to get a chance to finally enjoy my “alone time” inside in a comfortable and envious Partagas Cigar Room. As much as I love the outdoors, some things are always better when the comfort and luxury of a good Partagas is shared with a great room that always complements the moment.

Metallic mosquito, Toxorhynchites speciosus, female. They are very large, so I am very happy they don't prey on people.
